I love how excited you are about the Serbian foods. Also love the fact that you support the locals selling in the market and not just buy from the supermarket shops.
hey dude :) all of those smoked meats, bacon, kulen ( which is what you bought ), pecenica , prsuta and so on, are ready to eat :) they have been smoked and salted :) just grab a fresh piece of bread, i can suggest bakery " Skroz dobra pekara", they have very good bagels with sesame, both normal and boiled in water with honey, get your kajmak and meats and enjoy :) also the tomatoes are incredible in Serbia, although the season is in a month or two. P.S dont expect many people to speak english at marketplaces :)
The smoked meat I bought was SO good. I gotta try the rest! Serbians have amazing food. And it's not like i'm coming from a culture that has no good food. I've had amazing food. Just saying, Balkan foods are up there. But, is the bakery you suggested better than Kircanski Bakery (Pekara Kirćanski)? Because i was going to go there. Tomatoes are def incredible. I had a tomato salad today. SO good. Not usually a big fan of tomatoes. Thanks for the suggestion Maxim!
@@EvanRamani i was not refering to that bakery, although " Kirscanski" is also very famous for its Djevrek :) that bakery is next to the tram tracks, in Bulvear Kralja Aleksandra. also in that boulevard, you have a "Skroz dobra pekara" , its right across the Vuk Stefanovic monument :) im not suer if you have tried, but Trpkovic bakery is one of the best in town. Enjoy :) oh and just to be clear, " Kirscanski" is more old school, "skroz dobra pekara " is a chain of bakeries. They are ok, but i was just suggesting them cause they were 100m away from the marketplace :)
You bought a poppy seed strudel:)I hope you like it:) Serbs love that strudel, you can also buy it in bakeries. As for Serbian products, the most popular is "Bananica",biscuit "Plazma" and snacks "Smoki"those three things everyone buys and loves. If you like cakes, go to the oldest pastry shop in Belgrade it is called "Pelivan" street Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra 20.You will return home fatter than you came :)))))
Loved the strudel. Def one of my fav. I googled Bananica. I've seen that in some shops. I'll try the Plazma but it doesn't look too impressive. lol Looks can be deceiving though. Return home fatter? haha. That's the problem with cake. So good but can't eat much. We can have all we want in heaven though, right? Oh man, lame joke from middle school. I should probably delete it.lol.
@@EvanRamani LOL :) Those three things that I wrote about we eat the most, they are products that bind us to childhood.Plazma is an ordinary biscuit but it has something special in terms of taste,We put plazma everywhere in pancakes, ice cream, frappe ... in cheesecake....Now they make Plazma with different flavors, the best for me is chocolate.:))))If you want something interesting, try it in a pastry shop "Krempita" I could eat it every day...We Serbs are big hedonists, everything revolves around food:P
You bought Kajmak which originates from the South of Serbia, and Kulen (sausage) and Cake with poppy seeds traditionally made in Vojvodina (North of Serbia).
Kaymak should be kept refrigerated, otherwise it very soon goes bad because it contains no preservatives besides salt and being a fresh milk product. Strudel with mak is poppyseed strudel. You are not expected to leave any change - though you could, if you like - it's a budget market.
I didn't think of that lol. I just ate them but, they were all AMAZING except for the chocolate bar. That was just average. If you get ajvar, get the sweet one. tastes better. :) Thanks!
@@EvanRamani I know about ajvar and now you know, don't buy industrially produced but look for homemade, there is a biiiiiig difference in taste, because it is prepared differently. Cheers.
haha. Thank you. They are a ton of fun to explore and that Mak was amazing! The best i've ever had to be honest. I did find similar ones in Ukraine. That made me happy but it's not as good.
I'm sorry that the majority of people you encounter are older ones, because those Serbian generations weren't taught English, but Russian/French/German. Anyways, have a good one mate...
Like your videos, thanks, but you need a guide. Ha ha!! You got to try the smoked meats. I was born there but have lived most of my 55 years in the States. It's helpfull to have someone explain to you what everything is, but it's all good anyway. Enjoy your stay and keep the videos coming.
Thank you Dan! Appreciate it. Serbia is an amazing country! Hopefully, you get to visit Serbia soon! And I do need a guide but it's a bit more fun being an idiot and learn slowly lol.
I go to markets like that every other day, but it looks more fun when you buy things . Still waiting Smederevo fortress. And some night video. Say... Walk along Sava river under the bridges ?
Goran, thank you! Bro, that is a fun and exciting idea! I'll edit the fortress video tomorrow and post it thursday. I just edited a clip i shot in the morning called The best Cevapi in Pancevo to upload tomorrow. But thank you so much for the idea Goran. I'm excited about it!
the strudel will make you fail a drug test, just keep that in mind, it's not bad for you, it won't get you high, but if you take a drug test it's gonna come up positive for heroin
that's actually true? I seen it in Seinfeld but i thought it was just a joke, kind of. Elane was a crackhead in that episode, according to the drug tests lol
@@EvanRamani Yeah, it's getting better. It's a pretty big city, too. Question is, whether the people will keep tolerating being plundered like they are. Because, how Belgrade looks now is at the expense of inhabitants, while the authorities are all about making Belgrade into a tourist Mecca. The profit will go into their pockets. I'll give you an example. The Sveti Sava Temple it is the biggest tourist church in the world, or one of them. But, if you wanted to send a letter in the post office, you have to pay a small tax for it in form of a stamp. Which is mandatory, but is illegal. So, things are being made in similar manner. Anyway, you, as a foreigner, shouldn't dive much into local troubles.
@@EvanRamani my advice to you is to eat ajvar sweet and not spicy. It’s not that hot while eating but problems arise in the coming days. It doesn't matter how I know ... 😂
Nothing wrong with that. their meat is of amazing quality but it's not really true. They have special dishes with beans, bean soups with some pork, and sarma. Anything that is in the US, its available in Serbia with better quality. I guarantee that. :)
@@EvanRamani having 43.7% hungarian blood , even if i have Never put my feet there, just i want to learn the languqges of my ancestors. A watched your videos about albania too.
Dear, let me try to assist somehow ... So place where you got that "kajmak", they actually sell goat cheese, milk, and goat products. (Koзији means - Goat - You read it as Kozeeyee (: ) Anyway, you should really try different sorts of cheese since they are fresh and amazing in Serbia. Second, that rolled thing you got, sweet, it is Shtrurdla with poppy seeds (local name Makosh), and it is delicious. Taste is probably not like some other sweets you are used to, but me, personally I love it! And one more thing, if you like to eat fish, and I guess you do, you should get fresh fish from the river, and my suggestion, go and check a restaurant called Pasha in Zemun and ask for fish chorba (chorba is something in between soup and goulash) It is the best chorba you can find in 1000 miles around. You will not regret it! Enjoy Belgrade!
Wow. thank you so much for the intel Andjela! The Makosh was AMAZIN! Loved it! Very unique. That's why the title is must buy items lol. The only thing that was average, not amazing amazing, was the candy. And, i'm def gonna try more of the cheese soon. There is just so many types! They're probably all better than Gouda cheese lol. I wanted to go to Zemun again. So, now i got an excuse lol. Thank you!
Thank you Dejan! One of the best countries! So fun to explore Serbia. So safe compared to US cities too. I literally can go to any city, anywhere in the city without worry. Can't say that about Chicago or some other cities. I love Chicago but just saying. Serbia is so underrated!
It's cool. I was outside. I usually wear a face mask. But unfortunately, if you look into it, cloth masks don't do that much. It's still a good idea to wear since they make people feel more comfortable.
You bought (almost) all the right stuff. :) Next time when you are in meat section try PRSUTA (prosciutto) , SLANINA (bacon -our bacon is different then american ! ) SUVI VRAT (kind of prosciutto ) . Some meat products are pork (SVINJA), some are beef (KRAVA). So if you have preference, ASK! rare are chicken or lamb. As for cheese(and kajmak), we have YOUNG (MLADI) AND OLD (stari) , same stuff TOTALLY DIFFERENT TASTE! Try GOAT CHEESE! They are something EXTRA! (you had it where you bought kajmak! ) As for KAJMAK, try it like this: warm up the bread/ or toast it, and THEN put the kajmak on. 300din for that poppy seeds strudel is cheep. In bakery you would pay 100 for 1/10 of that strudel. :) KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! :)
Chicken is rare. That's good because chicken doesn't taste that good. lol I'll try a bunch of different cheeses soon. And ya, it was cheap. The one i bought probably tastes way better than ones at the bakery. That women is probably a pro at makign them. Thanks for the info Branko!
@X X i think they make some with just beef in some areas but usually there is a mix of pork in the meat. So, you gotta look into which areas don't have pork in them. I'm a tourist here, so i have no idea. but, google will have your answers or just ask the waiters. :) Wish you the best time here! You're gonna love it.
@@EvanRamani a youtuber from serbia in his last video speaking about strangers in serbia and leaving a comments on this video and now we going to videos like this to found Cile ru-vid.com/show-UC8GI5pTnHATgRK6vgWhu_-A
You should really tell where have you been in the video or in the title, or at least write it in the description below. When you write "Don't AVOID this food MARKET" no one knows which market you are talking about, there are dozens of such markets in Belgrade?! I can recognize that this is Bajloni but most wont be able, especially foreigners. The same was in restaurant in Zemun, I really wanted to go there but there is no way to find out where it is, or what is its name. This is just constructive criticism, I like your videos.
@@EvanRamani Fix that, please, and do a little more research before you make a video. Also it would be interesting to show how you try those local products, or at least give the impressions were they good for you or not, and what would you recommend. We Serbians all know very well what have you bought, but we are not your target audience. I really like your personal and no-cut approach, it comes quite spontaneous and sincere. Take care.
@@yudzin88 Ya, you're right. i didn't think of the impressions video. In the future, i will. Would have been an easy and helpful video to do. I was hoping the title would do...Must buy...because they were all amazing except for the candy. That was just average. I'm still new to this travel vlogging thing. i'm just going to places i wanna go and recording lol. But thank you, i appreciate the feedback and the support!
@@EvanRamani Thanks for the correction, now it makes sense where have you been. "Najlepše želje" candy is popular here because when we were in socialism we had only few options to choose for chocolate (and basically every other product). So it has here nostalgic value. But it is average at best, especially comparing it, for example, with Belgian chocolates. And about the travel vlogging in Serbia, people here are very friendly to tourists, because we never had many. So it would be very easy for you to befriend anyone and ask them to guide you and direct you to the right places. Serbia is pretty much undiscovered in the world. It would be interesting to know how you actually end up here?? Sorry if I bother you.
@@yudzin88 Ya, i know. the people here are very friendly to tourist. Even the police! I don't think it's just to tourist though. Serbians seem very genuine. Most of them. There are always bad apples everywhere. But, as far as how i got here...I was supposed to be here right before the virus situation happened. I was just reading about Stalin. Law school and computer programming took over most of my time in my 20's. So, i wanted to learn about European history. Started with Stalin and Hitler, then went to Tito. Learned about how life was in Yugoslavia and was surprised that people called it a paradise with no homeless people, most people get jobs, apartments and all that. I read a bit about how it split up. Eventually read this book called Culture and Customs of Serbia and Montenegro. It was super fun learning about the culture. Long story short, it lead to buying a ticket right before the virus. Because of the virus, had to wait a whole year lol. Here I am now. So, this is kind of my attempt to share the culture of different countries as i learn more about them because i read about Poland, Albania and other countries and the culture facts they had in the books were VERY basic general facts. I am also a big, HUGE, fan of An Idiot Abroad by Karl Pilkington. So, i was like...hey, i'm an idiot! I can be abroad making videos. lol Anyways, this is way too long. Apologies. But, you did ask. haha.
