My advice - dont watch too much dribble/behance or you will think that unless you are THAT good - you suck. In reality people manage to make very oldschool and weird and ugly stuff for 50$ an hour. Dont get demoralised by some dudes who have years and years of experience, you obviously just cant be that good.
hear hear - yes i think we can all feel inadequate when exposed to amazing impressive artwork or project that just blows everything we do out the water but its also very true that actually most clients are not looking for the super top top incredible artists, freelancers, they just need a little animation or video or graphic design or layout created and wont need to engage the best most expensive person on the planet to do it
Hi. You are right about dribbble. When I saw it, my first reaction was something like: what? I'm not so good! What am I doing here? But how it's says: never give up
Being a freelancer takes a lot of discipline, to execute your daily tasks. Work and Travel, or working remotely, takes another level of discipline, being stuck in between visiting the destination and doing work and sometimes "boring" tasks in comparison. Tried it, but work from home is far much productive.
Funny story regarding "1) Don't Call Yourself A Freelancer" - I remember reading on a Webflow Facebook group someone (I think Bob An??) commented about meeting an extremely wealthy prospect to discuss a potential project. OP left the meeting very disapointed and frustrated because the prospect thought "freelancer" meant he was going to work for FREE, lol!
Thanks for shining light on the truth about how it really is like being a freelancer. It takes time, commitment, determination, and a lot of consistency to reap the rewards of being a freelancer. I've seen freelancing being glamorized as the laptop life, doing client work on the beach and if you really are freelancing, you simply know that isn't true. However, the benefits of freelancing are worth working hard for, having your own schedule, and all those things that come with being a freelancer. People can get easily discouraged thinking it'll be this over glamorized digital nomad lifestyle and quit before they even get started. Great video!
Last year, my socmed was filled with photos of these freelancers with their laptops beside the beach and whatnot # worklifebalance. I felt sorry for the freelancer and the laptop being exposed directly under the sun. It's more like misbalanced to me.
Ran, 100% agree with you!!! no matter how you work, from where you work, when or with whom you work even, if you really have this clear picture of you, of who you want to be (or you are) in your mind, you'll succeed!
Thank you for supporting freelancing platforms. I really think that opportunities are everywhere and my relationships with upwork is only a proof to that)
Hi Flux I have definitely reviewed your content and your channel is now one of my 20 favorite business channels. Greetings from Cuba, keep going like this and keep setting higher and crazy goals
Nunca es tarde 🤣🤣🤣 Un saludo man
I have my fair share of interaction with major companies (I'm a packaging / branding designer) and well a lot of them are fairly cheap, or try to be cheap when it comes to projects and trying to hire you as a professional. And I'm talking about corporations that have incredible amount of money. You either have to really battle it out, or just keep it moving. It's funny sometimes how it works.
Great video you've made on not believing the hype about freelancing Ryan. Yes, everyone has their own opinion on what works for them and getting rid of excuses that hinder you from just taking action. It's the willingness to take small steps in the direction you want to go, whether you get responses or not, willing to improve your methods and to believe in yourself along the way. 🏆
You just have be honest with yourself. Say you don't have what it takes do cold calls or bother people. Team up with someone around you that can. Your job is find the answers. Advertising, putting in more effort. My favorite saying is it's like they dropped you off in middle of ocean rest up to you.
Hey Ran you should make a video with Fabiana like you did with others, we would like to hear her side of Hussle and how she managed. That would be an awesome YT video.
that's absolutely the best point of view (talking about the premises) that I've heard from you! But I also have to say that I found my self saying what you said here about many of your contents but I'm feeling that this is making amend for the those!
Respect is not the reason why people say don't call yourself a freelancer. Freelancers are people who are attached to other, established teams. They are not hired by the end client, but by a team that wants to supplement their team. If you are speaking to the client, you are an agency, not a freelancer. It's a different work model, it has nothing to do with respect.
Hey flux! You have great youtube content but for some reason your website seems out of format on my pc ( and probably some others), something worth checking out . Keep up with the great content
Work remotely is not so easy... Time zones is a problem. I worked for a Portfolio Manager from Brazil who lives in Portugal, and I am in Japan. Needed to quit, find a 7h job and build my business in this side of the world.
Freelance website is good for new people to earn some money, but it's 100% true that there is no respect for the sellers, those websites give the full priority to the buyers because they're spending money, but those websites are not understanding that those clients are coming back to their website because of the sellers.
You said you hire copywriters. As an aspiring copywriter, what could I saw in a cold email that would bring enough value for the person i emailed to hire me.
Thank you for that last one. I have been holding off from starting website migrations until I've got my website up even though I've now moved a big site whilst volunteering. I wouldn't be as sure on development until I've built my own site from scratch ie. achieved the skills I'm selling.
Number 3 isn't a lie. It's very inconsistent, especially in the beginning. The instability might be normal in business, but it's not normal for most jobs. Most jobs pay consistently. Also upwork is garbage and is very bad for the gig economy
What advice would you give to freelancers submitting proposals on Upwork? What was it about the freelancers that you hired that helped them standout and made you want to hire them?
La Bear Dod forget upwork. The site is nuts. The clients are emotionally ill mostly. It will ruin your life. They will burn you and they want cheap dirt cheap labor, all projects are for nothing. I don’t know where you reside but for an American with the cost of living here, it’s a joke. A cruel joke.
Kevin Vall awfully awfully sorry but I don’t really recommend a site for freelance work. All the others are fairly bad and you will be competing against people from second and third world countries. I don’t know if you are from the USA. The other sites are even worse, basically they want a freelancer for about 5 to 10 dollars an hour. I am dropping out of upwork. The platform can work for some people and I did well enough but the pay is quite low and the clients have no money for nothing. The algorithm of the upwork platform is very odd too. It calculates an odd success rate which is your reputation online. This is a real sick thing no one can tell how it’s calculated. I mean no one. It’s a secret and it’s not based on your ratings from just clients. It’s based on other things as well. The clients are the worst mostly dead broke people with new businesses or extremely small businesses. They are really a bad lot, wasting and raking you over the coals for $200 and fighting you over nothing. Had one who threatened me and wanted to have me do free work and if I did not he would write a bad review. Sorry Kevin. You can try it for three months. If you are in technical area, might be better. Good luck.
@@chicagomike That's definitely been my experience on there. Lots of low paying gigs and not the best client pool. Though I do try to stay away from those. My problem is trying to get the better paying gigs on there. I just don't know how to pitch myself when submitting proposals. It also doesn't help that I don't have a lot of history(jobs completed) on the platform.
@@labeardod sorry. I don't know what to tell you. try community help there online. I guess I have to drop out. an algorithm gives you a client success rate. it says 66 but almost all my projects we're almost five star. I cancelled two for small budgets because they were a waste. since that no one would hire me anymore truthfully there has not been a lot on there lately. l was averaging about $1500 a month feel bad. nothing I can do. good luck. RU-vid is not a mechanism for these types of questions. you need to find other resources.
Down to Earth Ran thanks alot. Would love to ask you couple of questions about my freelance business and get some advice.. Would it be possible to reach out on your mail or if it's necessary would buy a little bit of your time to get the advice?
My friend be genuine. ..you don't need to explain too much. ..if they say lies say openly or simply start with it.. .here you are trying to sell your videos for viewers and make RU-vid money . ......hello people be vigilant of these culprits...
I got some decent standard logos for $12. Ye dirt cheap. Nothing crazy simple and sweet but $12, if your trying to sell more expensive services its difficult or impossible without a big portfolio and reviews in my opinion
If you hire someone without a portfolio... You're either an idiot or broke. I don't care if someone tells me "hey hire my friend he's good" I'm not hiring them without seeing work they've done and it's really unprofessional if they have to email me a bunch of links. Create a WordPress or webflow account and make a freaking portfolio.
@@FluxAcademy Your anecdotal example means little to me. If they hired you solely on a recommendation then they're not smart as you think they are. I've had people recommended to me that were terrible. From a client perspective recommendations mean very little. Everybody wants to recommend their friend because they're friends and they wan to support them. From a freelance perspective, recommendations/referrals are definitely the best lead you can get, but as a potential client, if I'm going to spend good money on somebody, I need to actually see work that someone has done. "hey hire Mike he's good" is not enough for me to spend money. It's enough to start a conversation for sure, but the first thing I'm going to ask is "so what other projects similar to this one have you done?" "oh, you don't have a portfolio. *sigh* ok I guess email me a bunch of links/pictures and maybe I'll get around to sifting through that information". In my opinion, it's like having a professional email address. Are there people out there running their business on a yahoo.com email address? Sure. Does it look professional? No, not at all. If someone is trying to freelance, and be taken seriously as a professional, if they don't have a portfolio my first thought is "ok how seriously are they really taking themselves?" . It doesn't even have to be a super nice portfolio. Throw up a free WordPress/Webflow site, pick a nice template and display your work. And I'm not just talking out of my ass here either. Go create an account on Upwork (I mean don't do that, Upwork is garbage but for the sake of this argument) and don't do anything to your profile, and see how many jobs you get. 0. Upwork even knows this and will tell you hey, if you want people to actually hire you, you need to set up your profile. You need to tell people what you can do, you need to tell them what projects you've done in the past. You should add a little video describing yourself and your skillset. It's the same with all the other garbage "lead generator" websites like fiverr, thumbtack, freelance etc etc. They always tell you that you need to setup your profile if you want people to even consider you. Yes you can freelance without a portfolio, I just don't know why anybody would ever encourage it. Setting up at least a simple portfolio should be step one to becoming a freelancer.
