The engineer of a New York, Susquehanna & Western freight reduces his speed just a bit while southbound in Clayville NY on April 30, 2024 to make sure there is enough clearance between his train and a red VW Beetle, a/k/a "Bug," which was parked a tad close to the tracks along Railroad Street. Spoiler alert: no Bugs were squished in the making of this video.
Also included are street-running scenes from Utica's Schuyler Street and a studious Witold reviewing a New York State statute book on Railroad Law.

Great craftsmanship on that retaining wall and as always thanks for those comparison shots. I see the town rated a Pneumatic gate however no one was Goofy enough to leave a horse and wagon Trackside. The paper joint got one of the newest boxcars out there that being the second GTW boxcar and I wonder if in an earlier life the SOO covered Hopper ever delivered malt to the brewery. Witold's bold yawn made my day. Pacing your actions for the day is #Job 1

Hi from York, England! Good to see signs of Spring in the countryside, and interesting to hear about the construction of the on-street trackage. I guess it would be a big job if it ever needed to be replaced, but I'm sure Witold would be able to help with his knowledge of the legal aspects. The new camera certainly gets good results!

It's funny, everything time I have a question for you, you answer it before I can print it out 😂😂😂😂😂. But that's OK. Glad Witold is studying hard. He looks so serious lol. Great video!

About the audio in the beginning, was that man suggesting that the ties will rot and the rails will collapse? i love this street train. Its so very interesting, Thanks!

@railroadingrambler218 4 месяца назад
Well, eventually the ties will have to be replaced. They're inspected regularly and I expect they are in decent shape. Wooden ties can last many years depending on many factors; there are some ties on the Utica line that were installed in 1950 (they put date nails in the center of ties back then). I've even seen some ties on the Adirondack RR with date nails from the 1920s. There's been a big tie replacement project ongoing on the Utica line to Sangerfield (23 miles south of Utica) over the past several years.

Two longs, a short, and a long - coming to a road crossing! I always listen for those. Beautifully clear and crisp video! Witold is one smart dog, reading up on railroad law. He didn't even need glasses! It was nice that the precipitation didn't get the camera wet. Watching from Rome, NY.

Wow! Kickass camera there! Agree on the horn. Very sharp clear with good dynamics. I used to live right next to the Soo Line near Chicago years ago and "record" the trains with a Sony Stereo cassette machine. My goal was to get a good enough recording that when played back through my cheap ole stereo, it would sound like the train was actually there! LOL. Fun times.

The Clayville then & now shots are great; thanks Doug E & Rambler. Looks like that rock wall is less than 105 years old. Also, interesting that the track under the street is basically ancient technology, just paved over. 40-50 years since last inspection and it looks pretty good. I guess some things they got right the first time.

Fab filming with your new gadget, sorry I'm a technophobe! Railroad Street is lovely. The red car was parked a bit close to the tracks! No way would I park there. Amazing how close you get to the train to film. Thanks to you & Witold. 😊👍

Maybe it's a trick of the camera, but it looks like you're standing very close to the track yourself. Do be careful about that -- trains do sometimes drag stuff along with them that can cause serious injury or death if you end up tangled in them. The biggest risk is loose straps on flat cars and centrebeams, which doesn't seem to apply on this line, but it's still a good idea to stand back.
