My husband aka Bonfire Cartoons on facebook studied Australian trees during his 42 yrs as an Australian fire officer/trainer. He was fascinated at how quickly trees would burn if they contained oil like our Eucalyptus Gum. Near the end of his career, he knew how long a wildfire would last & what direction it would go. He said he sensed the weather condition with the lay of the land & could tell you how fast it would go with the different plants & trees.

@TKOR I feel like their videos have been getting shorter, less cleanly edited, and having more time-filling montages lately. I also suspect they either changed editors or got a new one because, as somebody who knows a little bit about video editing (though not enough to do it professionally) the edits seem a little careless, sloppy, and rushed lately. For example, at around 4:46 there is a poorly placed scene cut. Nate says "It (the water) is only getting to around 92 F" and then there is a cut, and Nate says that " 'it' is up to about 1000 F". I assume he must he talking about the fire after the cut because I doubt that the water ever got that hot. It would evaporate super fast if the water got that hot. The issue is that, because of where the cut was placed, the only indicator that 'it' was now the fire, was the few inches of difference in where he placed the probe (water vs. fire), which is hard to notice. It also doesn't help that the entire stove and pot are off-screen at the time, so you can only really guess where the probe is, anyway. Also, in the very next scene, the pot is gone. You only know the pot was there when he said the 2nd part is because he mentioned it. The cut should have been placed at the beginning of the sentance or paragraph where he, presumably, stated the object that 'it' was refering to. I have noticed little things like this in most of their recent videos. I would gladly have them make 1 or 2 fewer videos a week if the videos they made were higher quality, a little longer, and had fewer time-fillers.

@extrastuff9463
@extrastuff9463 3 года назад
I would assume (or at least hope) that the biggest difference is the moisture content. If you cut down a living tree I'd recommend to process the wood into smaller chunks and let them dry for the appropriate amount of time (varies by storage method, local climate and wood types). When buying packaged store bought firewood it should ideally be ready to use and not have to go through that process first.

Yeah, it makes sense that those were the two best woods to burn. They often are lighter, dry easier, and have much more sap, which readily burns.

Speaking from experience in fueling a wood-burning stove for heating a house, dense hardwoods like oak tend to have the greatest fuel value. However, they don't burn as rapidly, so in a small, inefficient stove like that, they won't do as well as softwoods. On the other hand, with a properly designed stove and with careful tending, they can get way hotter and burn far longer than softwoods.

Try putting wood in a freeze dryer then see if that makes a difference in the burn time and temp.
@coreygoll5614
@coreygoll5614 3 года назад
Test total heat output time. Measure from when you start the gel or when the wood actually takes fire, to when they have completely burnt up and no longer outputting heat. Control the amount of wood for each group. We have a lot of Douglas FIr that burns pretty hot but short lived. Another common one here is Madrone which I believe burns less hot, but longer. See if you can tell a difference between wood density (growth ring density) and burn time. Might take awhile, but you could have multiple burning at the same time. Always stay curious.

Best form of control is to get the wood pieces as close to each other in shape, and fix the probe to the bottom of the grill so that the readings would be from the metal heating up rather than trying to find a hot spot in the wood. Depending on budget having them all set up with propane and an igniter to get them all started at the same time so that it would be displayed how long each took instead of just notes. With the camera viewing them as they burn to also show the other aspect of how much smoke each produces as it burns comparing to the others.

Spruce and birch are the main firewood in interior Alaska. Spruce is more common so it's used more, but birch is said to make longer lasting fires. Cottonwoods don't dry properly and tend to rot before they are ready to use, and are more of a creosote hazard.

depends on the scale you use. Taking ratios from a system that does not have a consistent zero point is not meaningful. in kelvin a hot summers day is about 316 Kelvin (110 F). now, 1000 F is 811 Kelvin. This is only about 2.55 times as hot.

Try contacting various rocket mass heater developers. Such as: - Rocket Mass Heater Shippable Cores - 2 hours smashed into 8 minutes, from "Better Wood Heat" - Aircrete Rocket Mass Heater Uses One Log for 13 Hours of Heat They'll take you in whole different directions. For example many of their burn chamber temperatures easily exceed 2,000 F.

The spruce and pine burned the best because it contains pitch as its a softwood. Which is also why you don't want to use it in wood stoves. As it also creates large amounts of creosote and can cause chimney fires if used often. Its fine for camp fires just not indoors. Plus it doesn't leave alot of hot coal behind. So its akin to burning paper. You'll get a quick burst of heat but hardwood like oak, ask, maple, birch etc.... will give you more sustainable heat. Also fruit wood , like apple trees or peach trees and so on generally are some of the hottest burning wood types.

I have a suggestion for a video: If you haven't done this already I think it would be cool for you to try making Prince Rupert drops (those glass teardrop thingies) using different liquids. I don't care what liquids you use but you have to try liquid N2 and some kind of soda. (I want to see how the cryogenic temperatures, as well as the gas bubbles, affect the formation). Thank you.

If you're using it for heat like in a wood stove or fireplace, the heavy hard woods are the most energy dense. Oak, maple, cherry, hickory, etc. These will put out the most heat over time. Pine or spruce may burn hotter for a short period of time.

You should try burning black locust. It grows locally and has the reputation of being able to melt the inside of wood stoves. I live in Virginia and yes I have melted the interior baffles one a wood stove with it. It also burns for a long time. There are also some woods that give off toxic fumes and should never be burned in a fireplace (like found in some antique furniture.)

I just happened to have a book that lists the "Heat Values of Wood Fuel" in a chart form showing Btu per pound and Btu per chord (128 cubic foot), so energy per (mass) weight and energy per volume, but it dosen't list temperature of combustion in open still air. Hickory is up top on volumetric energy density while white pine tops the per unit mass energy density. I don't burn mesquite wood except in campfires because it burns hot enough to cause some damage to fireplaces and stoves.

Some cotinus tree varieties have quite an aromatic wood, maybe those might be interesting to try? That stuff also lights off quite well when clearing old brush from a yard in a burn pile. (And the "smoke" part that the seeds form in also makes a nearly perfect tinder when dry.)
