At 100% efficiency the motor comes out to 73% of a horse power.... technically not lying... but I would assume about 85ish % efficiency on the motor and that would be about 2/3rds a hp. So whatever right?

I totally agree with your assessment of belt sanders. No company out there makes a heavy-duty model that is comprised of metal parts instead of plastic. As you said, build it and they will buy it. No takers to this point. It's sad that no companies are investing in quality components for these power tools. Bushings vs. bearings. Plastic vs. metal. Even the overall quality lacks drastically. A lot of reviews of epic failures of these power tools because there isn't enough effort put into the construction. It's all about the bottom line and how much of a profit margin these companies can make on the overhead. Furthermore, built off-shore with no quality control oversight. Most are disposable and cannot be repaired if they fail. This is where we have come to at this point in time. Thanks for the demo. Cheers!

When my belt/disc sander took a dump after 25 years of hard labor a few years back I bought a used variable speed workshop bench grinder that I found while trucking along the world's largest yard sale and I ended up building my own belt/disc sander/grinder and I am very please with it and with only a few modification plus materials total cost less than 60 bucks.

Thanks for the review. I’m in the market for my first sander as a new woodworker and I’ve seen all those big box models and they all look like the same model. I do like the direct drive on this and see why it is better. I don’t know how much I’ll use one these sanders so I don’t want to over-buy for my needs but I also don’t want to buy a junkie product. I’d rather spend a bit more to get something quality.

$225 on Amazon. At that price this unit should be considered a medium-class belt/disc sander which is terrific news as I, too, was very disappointed in the ubiquitous light-class units that flooded the market it seems. I am not the type of guy to buy any tool that will likely be replaced at the one-year mark nor should any of you. Thank you for being brutally honest about this product sir. Wish more users showed some balls and answered the tough questions you want to know about a product. Oh, and ACTUALLY USED a product extensively enough to know which features were good versus which were not so good. I was wondering the difference about direct drive versus the belt drive units. Absolutely no comparison. For instance, what do you do when you belt wears out to the point you are constantly bogging down your unit? If you were like 99% of the folks out there, you'd chuck this garbage in the trash. I didn't see one of these low-cost units mention a thing about the belt issue or even how to go about replacing one. Again thank you a million times over for telling things the way they are.

Another option is the Porter Cable PCB420SA. It looks very similar, is direct drive, and is also 5 Amps. I've had one for several years and love it. It has plenty of power. I bought the cheapo Harbor Freight 4x36 Belt/Disc sander first, but quickly returned it. It was a powerless piece of junk. Lowes has the Porter Cable for $259.

Now I'm using a Rockwell (1 month) that's basically the same as the Wen with Rockwell colors. If it doesn't last, I'll give the Bucktool a try. Too bad Delta no longer does a 4x36.

The old one in the video was a delta. I believe the buck tool is just a rebranded porter cable. There's several brands who make them and they look the same with the same specs. Just trying to filter out what ones are the same vs what ones are different is a job in itself.

Good review, I just picked up one of these sanders myself and I'm excited to get using it. You mention wanting an industrial version of this, I'm not sure if you've already found it since you made this video but Jet makes a 4x36 belt/disc sander with a 1hp variable speed motor, the IBDG-436VS. I haven't looked too closely at it myself since it also comes with an industrial price tag of around $1100.

Great video. I bought the rikon because of this. The rikon 50-114 is the same model as the Bucktool but rikon has a 5 year warranty. Bucktool doesn't list any warranty. The belt work table is ehhh. I needed the full 12 inch run so had to lose the table and dust collector. The stock Platon is ok for wood. Maybe the rikon is better in this respect but I'm not doing knives. It comes with 80 grit belt and disc. The belt runs so fast it leaves a very smooth surface but takes out a lot of material. I switched to a 120 belt. Wood comes out like glass.

I have a 20 year old Craftsman that is still going strong, no drive belt, but with a 6” disc. It’s not as fast as yours though, but never had it stop on me. Best upgrade hands down, was a stainless steel belt lifter, and a leather belt from handamerica as I recall. This gives you a giant slack belt grinder, which is perfect for razor sharp convex edges on axes and other big blades. Then final polish with the raised slack leather belt to a super sharp edge. I use green chromium oxide compound on the leather.

Don’t know if peanut butter would work to cut the adhesive on that disk but it works very well on so many other types of adhesives. Certainly, because peanut oil is it’s own kind of messy so you have to use dish soap and hot water to cut through the peanut butter. More than one application may be necessary.

I was so happy to get one. I finally found a great price got the Bauer from Harbor freight… I am so completely disgusted and disappointing that piece of crap. You did exactly what I want. Mine does has no power sand, a piece of wood and stop. It would just light pressure plus the sanding belt is kind of recessed into the track so you can’t really do use the side whatever.

In case anyone wants one of these - They are 400$ on Ebay, 250$ on Amazon and 206$ on Walmart, I grabbed the Walmart one tonight with free shipping. It's also the same as a Rikon unit that's out there. The models people do not want to buy - Are the WEN, RYOBI and a handful of others that are all identical, just look at how they are set up and you will clearly see they are all the same aside from the colors and maybe the switch or shape of a knob; Avoid the cheap ones.

If I used a belt sander professionally then yes, I could justify spending that much on a sander. However, when I only use one maybe twice a year for projects around the house or in the garage, the WEN I have makes much more sense economically.

Thanks for video! I respectfully disagree that belt drives "rob power". Belt drives use different size pulleys to create proper torque and spindle speeds while utilizing the most efficient electric motor RPM. I think you must be comparing only the cheapest of the cheap belt drive sanders. Belt drive equipment has been the standard for the last 100 years. That said, I am a fan of Buck Tools when it comes to in-expensive shop equipment.
@OUTDOORS55
@OUTDOORS55 Год назад
They do rob power. Especially on under powered 1/2hp sanders that are the norm. The gold standard is direct drive. No power loss and lower vibration. Direct drive is common in the grinder industry for these vary reasons. You can't compensate for less power with a gear reduction. When it comes to sanders/grinders more power is always better. Watts are power and power equals work. 👍

fyi,there is about 750watts per 1hp 750watts/120 volts = approx 6.25 amps per hp @ 120volts, of course that is at %100 efficiency so real world numbs finger about 7amps per hp.

I was looking to get an all-round sander and picked this one up. It's really got the power for its price, but I wish there was some adjustability to the belt, so u could put a curvature on it to get clearance for knife sharpening. It's just got too much bulk around the belt to really get a 14-17 angle on my knives without running into the bolster/handle.

Alex, you inspired me. I bought this sander, and I got a piece of pyroceram glass and JB welded it as a platen. I also kept the dust collector and simply cut off the right side of the plastic housing so I can change belts without having to remove it (got the idea from another RU-vidr). Using the work surface from the wheel side on the belt now, but I think it might not be stable enough. Wondering if I should fabricate a work surface that isn't part of the tool now.

You removed the tool rest saying "its no good" and "you don't use them" but you didn't say why. A lot of users want the belt vertical and need that rest. Also, I see the rest mounts fairly high, leaving less length the platen. This is because when sanding long pieces have to clear the 6" disc on the other side. Some belt drive models give you a lot more platen length

I have the Porter / Cable version of this sander (PCB420SA). My 2 biggest complaints are the table location for the belt, you get robbed 4" of belt, 2 Dust collection. Dust collection is terrible! I mainly work wood so I want really good dust collection! I opened it up to find out why and the plastic piece that is at the bottom of the belt had NO opening for dust to be collected. I found that rather odd considering it has a built in fan to aid in collection. I had to cut an opening in that plastic piece which did help, but it still lacks the ability to use enough CFM to effectively collect dust efficiently.

@@PaintHerWhite I ended up buying the Buck Tools sander in this video . I totally agree 👍 Honestly when I made this comment I had been using an older system like the WEN ...BUT NO WAY would I ever go back . I'm way happy I spent the extra money on this thing cause it's a beast. I didn't realize how much tune and energy I was waiting using the budget sander.

Went on the Google machine and saw that Jet makes a 4×36 for around $650.00. It has an 8" stone on the side instead of a disk but you can find those on line as well.

If that one peters out, you might consider Rikon’s new 50-114. I’ve been using the crap out of mine and I couldn’t be more happy. Best disc/belt setup I’ve bought in over twenty years.

I've considered getting one of these but 4x36 belts are a pain to find (well ceramic ones anyway, aluminium oxide just wear out too quick). Nice review mate, best wishes from here in the UK.

Good stuff, thanks for posting. Interesting about adding glass to the platten. I'll look for ceramic fireplace glass. Did you consider grinding the square edges off... maybe just the leading edge? Or is that not possible with this sort of glass?

Nice presentation, interesting. The comment was made that one of the first thing you did was remove the disc and the factory adhesive; why remove the disc? Was it replaced? With what? Or was it cleaned and reinstalled? Please clarify.

Hey man, love all your videos. Saved me so much time when I started forging most of all. Just ordered the belt sander in this video still waiting for it to get here. While waiting I’m trying to track down a piece of glass for the Platten. Did you just get a fireplace door panel and cut it yourself? Or did you have it done somewhere? I’ve done a bit of glass cutting in the past. But by no means M any expert.

The problem with your “ bump” from the belt is your glass is mounted to high compared to the end rollers , if you lowered it the bump might be negligible ! ?

Great review. Just what I needed. Your info and candor are refreshing. How is the noise level on this tool? My discomfort level with the Delta sander is way high. I agree that the 4x36 format is extremely useful. Kudos for narration and editing. Subscribed!
@OUTDOORS55
@OUTDOORS55 4 года назад
Its not terrible maybe slightly less noisy than the delta. Most of it is belt noise though so not much can be done about that.🙂

Before you said you screwed it down, I was thinking a swing out kick stand from the base similar to a folding knife. Sometimes you have to go custom for what you want. People ask me why I want to make all my own stuff? Because I don't design in obsolescence, and demand a higher degree of quality than offered to the public.

Yeah im super sketch because of the 5a rating. I have a craftsman 4.something A. Its ok. I wanted a torquier drive. This looked good, but no way its 1hp. 1hp should closer to 8A. I think ill just save for HFs 6x48 which actually draws 9a. But who knows what drive losses it has, so maybe its a wash compared to this. Plus id have to buy all new belts. Thanks for the video.
