HEADS UP! As a Ham, I have many radios! I have the UV5R- UV2 ver- and the Tri-bander! Although the 5R is the most used! I had the software crap out ON ALL 3 RADIOS! The Tri-bander SET to the local 2Meter freq, transmits 440 when pressing the PTT! YEAH! I get these are cheap radios ! I have Kenwoods that are 40 yrs older and work fine! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUY! The UV-2 and Tri has less than 2 hours operating time on them! BUY something more dependable FOR THE BUG-OUT BAG !!!!!!!!!! ( until this recent discovery, I recommended these to people ! ) Also, for the other commenter- NO! You cannot transmit ON GMRS freqs with these according to the FCC! I have that license too! PLease get LICENSED since it is much easier today than it was Years Ago! Take the Practice Test @ The FCC ! IT COSTS NOTHING ! Thanks !
From Mick: @echohunter4199 thanks for watching and i appreciate the nice comment. On Friday we are dropping another radio review. TD-H3 which has a great repeater programming option. 73’s
From Mick: @TM-el3rr, thanks for watching and hope the units work out for you. It’s amazing how much these units can do for such a cheap price, but I wouldn’t give up my ICom.
From Mick @jimmybaker7479, thanks for the info. I was just playing with the radio and figured that out. Better late than never. Sorry for making everyone listen to 1, 1, 1, 1, ……..even I found that annoying.
From Mick: @kchaney56, thanks for watching that’s great your kids are into ham radio. My dad had been trying to get me to get my license for years, finally got it last year. 73’s
@HelloNotMe9999: I took your advice and purchased a TD-H3. I like it - go check out the review video on Portie's Garage!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KxzX0COzn38.html
From Mick: @marcchinnock5525, I have not used the UV 17R Pro and UV 21 Pro. I like both Baofengs that I have and really like a new one TD-H3, check out our review video just released: TIDRadio vs. Baofeng: TD-H3 vs UV-5R....Tell Me Who Wins!!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KxzX0COzn38.html
Ya if you wanna give up your 4 amendment rights sure get ya license. Just know when fcc wants to enter to check your gear you cant deny or u go to jail which is a clear violation of your right without a warrant but they dont need it when you get your license
From Mick: @sellC2964, thanks for watching, I never noticed the wind chimes, I’ll have to think about that if I do other videos from the porch. Good insight, thanks.
@@Portie2216 that's too bad. I have a license for both and like having an all in one radio. I really use GMRS more than ham. Those channels are much more active in my area. Glad you tested it, I almost bought one. Thank you!
From Mick: @flynlow43, glad to help, I don’t hear much on the GMRS around here. I wonder if “unlocking “ the radio would allow transmitting, but would be worried about accidentally transmitting on wrong frequencies, or with wrong wattage.
From Mick: Yes the UV-5R and UV-5RM Plus have alpha tagging you can display for each memory channel. I programmed in a name for each channel noting a repeater location using the CHIRP Software and then went through the radio menu to switch to display name in lieu of the frequency.
From Mick: I’ve hit a repeater 36 miles away but distance all depends on line of sight, obstructions, hills, trees, buildings, etc. I would guess radio to radio through woods 1.5- 2 miles.
From Mick: Thanks for watching @user-ki3dj9pu9y. I have found that if you take your time and look around you can find some good bundles. But make sure you look closely at what you are getting sometimes they are off brand. Image that quality.
From Mick: Thanks for watching the video @Oldsmobile69! I would never give up my Icom or Yaesu, but it is amazing how much those low cost radios do. Let's see how long they last! 73.s
Mmm, no. I've had to take it apart and fix it three times already. then I binned it and got a Diamond Telescopic. The couple cap in the antenna breaks away with even minor knocks or bumps.
From Mick: @geoffroberts1126, thanks for watching, I have also had better luck with better antennas on most if not all my radios. That’s part of the fun of the hobby always building better antennas, 73’s
