In the last few days I've managed to make my old FJ shoes totally waterproof by painting them with a Product called Fabsil it used for waterproofing tents, so far in 3 rounds shoes are totally dry despite rain and heavy dew
Six months ago I bought the Under Armour HOVR Drive Wide E GTX for $170 AUD and so far very happy. Being goretex they are guaranteed waterproof for 2 years (and just coming out of the wettest spring in years in Melbourne I was glad!). I’m less fussed about breathability, but being goretex they might not be too bad (will know more after this Aussie summer). They have plenty of cushioning & support which is more important to me than breathability. Some might find them heavy, but they are so comfortable I don’t notice the weight and I don’t think I’ll have any problems wearing them on firm ground. They key for me is: I will never play spikeless shoes having watched some of my playing partners slip around without spikes (even in summer), especially if we play early morning and there’s a dew or the tees have just been watered. These Under Armours have big grippy spikes so I can definitely recommend them for people who worry about grip.
Great Vid very informative. I have 2 pairs of shoes for summer, a spiked pair and a spikeless pair, for winter I use a pair of golf boots. I find that water runs down from my waterproof trousers and into the top of the shoes in winter so I prefer boots.
Great video. Wish there were more size 13 golf shoes. Found a cheap pair in size 13 and after 3 rounds a week for 3 months my feet were broken. I would definitely tell new golfers to budget more for shoes because you will walk lots
Good video Gary! This is a topic that I haven’t thought much about! I play three of the four seasons a year. The winters here are too miserable for golf, but there are a few good winter days. I regards to my shoes, I play in my foot joys!
Gaz, I like a lightweight waterproof shoe with spikes. I use a black pair in the winter, And I have the same shoe in white for the summer. The reason for this as a "year 'round shoe" is that I play early in the mornings during spring to fall. The golf course has been watered overnight and having a shoe waterproof, instead of "breathable" helps. I hate wet socks. I've tried the breathable. They are lighter weight and "feel" comfortable. They do give up a bit of stability. And for seniors that is not always a good thing when the spikeless version slips when walking in wet conditions. A tip I would add, is have 2 pair of shoes. If you are playing day after day, alternate which shoes you wear. let one pair completely dry out ( your feet do sweat inside). This will make your shoes last longer. As for your member that forgets his shoes, wear them when you get in the car to go golfing. Take the shoes you want to change into after the round and put those in the boot. I started doing that in the winter so that the golf shoes are warmed up inside and i'm not changing them in the cold. I carried it over into summer. Quicker to get onto the course when you can grab your bag and go.
Three things for me:. Waterproof, spikes, and boa-type lacing system. I tried spikeless shoes this year and my lower back would hurt after a round of golf. I switched to shoes with spikes and no more back problem. I also don't tie my shoes anymore. Boa-type lacing system uses a dial to tighten the shoes instead of tying laces. Too loose - bend down and turn the dial. Too tight - lift the button to undo, push button down and turn to tighten again. Easy peasy - no more tying laces again.
I really like your honesty, there’s me wandering around the golf course with black shoes and shorts in the summer, looks like I’ll have to splash the cash. 👍😎
Proper underrated advise that Gaz. I honestly never thought of half the stuff you were saying. I’d pick a pair that was waterproof but then use them all year round, and by the time it came back to winter they weren’t waterproof anymore. I hope in the future I can afford to get 2pairs 😂
I won a Monday night stableforth and with the cash i bought a lovely pair of Footjoy, great shoe, robust and comfy, and clean up real nice, i have another summer pair of Footjoy in white with the brown saddle great summer shoe.
Gary great topic! There has never been so much choice. I use only 1 pair all year round: Under Armour Speith. Comfy, waterproof, great grip and stability and easy to keep clean. Perfect for me playing up here in Scotland. Thanks Gary
Waterproof is the issue, I play first tee time year round. Even in the summer the dew is heavy enough to need the protection. Foot joy tour x works pretty well year round. In black.
I live in Canada, so no such thing as winter golf. I often tee off at 06h00, so the grass is often wet. I always purchase waterproof shoes with spikes.
I have a pair of Ecco Biom G3’s and literally the first round I played in them, they became the most comfortable and stable golf shoes I’ve ever owned. After a few rounds I was quite certain that my swing just felt more comfortable and consistent since wearing these shoes. The proper shoe is definitely a factor in your game and after having been a steadfast fan of the original Adidas Tour 360 (with the separate heel and toe pads) which were brilliantly comfortable, I am now convinced that Ecco with the G3 has nailed down the perfect golf shoe design. A close friend went and grabbed a pair after my pouring on about how taken over I was by the G3 and his impressions are the same as mine so it’s not just my old ass feet that felt the same excellence!! I agree totally that your shoes can effect your game in a noticeable way so if they are in any way uncomfortable or not fully stable, go get some new ones for sure.
ECCO GORE TEX LINED SHOE SOFT SPIKE LIKE THE BIOM ARE BRILLIANT ALL YEAR ROUND, IMHO, I do live in Scotland so need something waterproof for the summer!
I only have adidas golf shoes now after trying the old faithful of footjoy. I've got a pair of zg1's (the last pair of Adidas you picked up) they're super light and breathable in summery conditions. I've also got the Adidas tour 360 spiked shoes for winter. The only down side to them is cleaning the gap in the sole. But the ZG1's you can use all year no problem
@@garymartingolf I have the lime green and grey and they are my go to shoes. You'd think they would run warm on hot days because they are mostly waterproof but they aren't hot at all. This year's version was certainly more breathable, and have the same great traction but are sadly not waterproof at all, even though they have a 2 yr guarantee. Found that out the hard way during an early morning member/guest day.
Had a pair of Dryjoys when I was back in the UK, and they served me well round Willow Valley in the winter, which I'm sure you are aware Gaz, struggles with water in the winter months. Think I used them in the summer as well, although I also have a pair of lightweight footjoys, but they look like clown shoes, so I don't really wear them much.
Interesting video , I currently have summer shoes and winter shoes. I was considering just buying one pair for the upcoming year … think you’ve changed my mind on that now 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great advice, the importance of a good shoe is often overlooked. I have had a pair of ECCO shoes for a few years, this past year I purchased a pair of True shoes for summertime walking the course. I love both pairs but there is a definite difference between the two. I feel more 'toe forward' with the balance in the Eccos and more 'flat natural' with the Trues. all that said my friend can still whoop me wearing his flip-flops grrrrr.
Good idea but that is a very expensive proposition especially for a guy like me that wears a size 14EEE American size. Only the very expensive shoes seem to be made that large.
Get one with a heel that is at least 1 inch high. These flat bottom shoes with molded heels doesn’t make you taller. The taller you are the farther you hit it. Simple physics.
Another issue I have with shoes is when switching styles. I've got two different pairs. One very comfy but flat ECCO shoe and another spiked Sketcher pair which has a higher heal. When I first switch to the Sketchers, it takes me a while to get used to them and stop topping as I'm higher at address!
i get mocked profusely for saying i need to get used to my shoes when switching from spikeless to spikes, even that few mm makes a huge difference, i feel your pain!!
Has to be the foot joy hyperflex boa, or at least when you win them as I prize in a comp 😍😍 On a serious note anything boa, nothing worse that tying wet laces, always have a summer pair and winter pair
Spot on with the topic here Gaz, as someone who hasn't been playing long I've quickly learned the importance of correct footwear. I've ended up with 4 pairs to suit conditions in the Manchester area: 1. Footjoy Pro SL (waterproof and spikeless) for slightly damp days 2. Puma Proadapt (Waterproof and spikes) for rainy days 3. Puma summer shoe (mesh upper and spikeless) for hot/dry days 4. Footjoy winter boot (ankle boot, spikes) for extreme wet/wintery days
Gary can you do some content about low Swing speed 70mph and driver lofts ie 13degrees Can with new tech and a fitting lower loft get more distance iff you have an upward Attack? Why not have content with someone who Has low swing speed? Just a thought Regards Markspearey
Wait till you try on a pair of johnston and Murphy cx4 golf shoes. Haven't had a better shoe that was comfortable, supportive and stylish and I've tried many UA, Adidas, Nike etc.
Gary, your videos are superb The variety of topic that you cover From 45° tees, to club reviews, to mental health, to rules, to clothing, to buying 2nd hand club tips, to teaching, etc, etc What a variety, its never just the same thing, some vlogers just do tips the only confuse people You have came such a long way in a short period of time mate Honestly, keep up the good work, I am really enjoying your content, cheers mate
Thank you very much. I do really appreciate all the support I get from you guys whilst I’m still learning and I’m very rough around the edges with putting videos together. Thank you
This is great content Gaz. Unfortunately for me, I have an issue with golf shoes. The issue being I'm all style and no substance. I've played for about 18 months. Sitting at around low 20s handicap I'd guess and I literally have a pair of shoes for every colour t-shirt, jumper or jacket I own. In excess of 15 pairs already. Different colours and different styles. My Golf isn't great but at least I look the part 😂😂🙈🙈🙈
It all depends on where in the world you live. I live in Southern California, which has the best year round climate in the world. Living here, a golfer can easily where one pair of shoes all year round.
i love the comment ' i found i had forgot my shoes' us older golfers can relate. I practiced my putting all night before a big club match. got to the course that morning and found i had left my putter in the hall at home.
Great vid on what truly is (as someone else mentioned) a first world problem! I'm in the market for some new 'all round' shoes and was eyeing up a pair of FJ Tour X... Only thing is, the stock levels in my size, and generally, seem to be dwindling! I can only imagine that they are going to replace with an updated model? Does anyone have any idea?
Great video, have a pair of dryjoys and pro sl. Think they cover all year round 😁 the pro sl carbon shoes are brilliant. Only thing I will say is I don’t think any shoes stay waterproof for long.
For me having a winter shoe all year around works well. I think playing in Ireland similar to the UK we don’t get too many hot hot days 🤣🤣 obviously if you were going on golfing holidays I’d say it’s a different story.
Golf shoes! Gary, many thanks for raising an important topic that is dear to my heart, having suffered from foot issues for most of my adult life. Is there an ideal "all year round golf shoe, I would answer definitely NO! But I would also say that the "perfect" golf shoe does not exist, period! Basically, the major Golf brands are conning Golfers, with the shoes that they offer and it horrifies me how badly designed golf shoes are. Keeping it as simple as I can, golf shoes are completely the wrong shape anatomically and counter-productive biomechanically. The only company that comes anywhere close to offering a well-designed shoe for golf is True Links and even these are deficient in a number of key aspects.
I've got a pair of Mizuno waverider based shoes which are nice, but have just purchased a pair of Payntr X-001F golf shoes and so far they feel great, and waterproof.
How can somebody recommande a pair of shoes ?? Their's nothing more personnel than a pair of shoes. Even in the same brand some suit me, some don't. Ridiculous.
They can recommend a model of shoes based on their experience with the quality? Eg. Waterproof? Hardwearing? Value for money? On features of a golf shoe we’re recommended for different conditions. Thanks for watching
@@garymartingolf 2 things are important for golf shoes. Waterproof or not (and it's written on the shoes) and confort. And no one can assess on this point for somebody else.
Im just like your member. I have 6 pair of shoes. All different colors and styles. 3 spiked and 3 spike less. Nike, Adidas and FootJoy. It all depends on the weather and what you need from your shoes
What is the life span of shoes realistically? My summer shoes this year become next seasons winter shoe. I find the waterproofing on the does go quickly in the wet.
What shoe did you go for? I guess it depends on the amount you play. I used to play twice a week, and if I got two years out of a shoe, I’d be happy. I’d say, realistically about approx 200 rounds Most manufacturers only guarantee for 12 months so I’d guess, they’re basing that on 2/3 rounds a week.
@@garymartingolf hi Gary I went for puma ignites. Very comfy and water proof I played today with them for the first time in the winter more wet conditions. Only down side they have no spikes but did grip well. They are not the best for being breathable on summer months but for £70 a pair and managing to get 18months out of them playing 1-2 rounds a week they are great shoes.
I only wear woolen socks, so dry/breathable is so much less of a hassle. Wool improves the performance of ALL footwear. THIS is a best kept secret I'm letting out. I heard the old fellow. I'm re-gearing up after a few decades off. FJ it is for me then, and not the sneakers looking type.
I have a pair for each season - I do love the Footjoy Pro SL “Boa” - quite expensive but so comfortable. Also white shoes not great for muddy winter conditions 😀
Great content again Gary, my gripe is golf shoes today don't seem to be as durable as those from a few years back, I've had 2 pairs now from a major manufacturer that while have been supremely comfortable have lasted less than 5 months one of which was the manufacturers top of the range shoe!
@@garymartingolf they were Sketchers the first pair were Go Golf Torque and the second pair were ProV4's which at the time were the top of Sketchers range
I bought skeckers golf shoe and had to return it. I measured the back of the shoe compared it to Adidas and it was Half an inch lower no wonder it kept slipping off.
why does every waterproof shoe start leaking one week after the year guarantee expires. It's the unanswered question in golf. I personally think most golf shoe manufacturers are taking us for a ride.
Pair of normal golf shoes with soft replaceable spikes. Use them all summer and come the winter months just wear them then as a old pair and bin them after 12months. And repeat
Shoes are a personal preference.. I don't sweat much so breathability isn't much of a concern for me. I prefer grip so use my FootJoy FJ Originals all year round. BIG spikes and loads of support. I've been considering summer shoes but tbh i've not struggled with my FJ's at all. Saying that, they were horrible when they were new! Once they "broke in" they now feel great.. I'll be getting the Adidas equivalent next.
Good video, currently looking for next shoes. I am brand bias regarding shoes as always used footjoy. Currently use the tour x for winter and traditions summer both with spikes. Any other recommendations? Like the look of the adidas zg21.
For me sketchers soft spikes waterproof to a point in the summer and footjoy dry joy tour spiked for the winter, have found a shortage in a lot of sizes this winter Have heard the Ecco gortex are good but 200 quid ish
I bought a couple pair of FJ leisure style shoes this year. You’re right, not a lot of support. My feet hurt more with those when walking than I thought. These light weight shoes, I figured, would be more comfortable.
The old Adidas 360 Tour was a great all round shoe…. Leather upper, waterproof, boost and spikes with torsion…. You could use them all year as soft, lightweight and lightweight. But then Adidas stopped making them. 🤷♂️
@@garymartingolf I had them 3 years in a row, in the wide fit they seemed more durable. I find with this years crop so few are leather, and synthetic leather make your feet smell which is why I’m now Footjoy summer and winter. Really good and informative video though 👍
I’ve only ever had one pair, but I didn’t think they aged so well for an expensive shoe. What do you think? Maybe it’s the mixed conditions we get over here.
Thanks Gaz. Over the past few years as most golf manufacturers have been moving toward trainer-style golf shoes, I've been questioning why I even need golf-specific shoes. Just a pair of shoes with an aggressive tread? More discussion on the science behind the golf swing, the mechanics of the feet in the swing, and how all that translates to shoe design is probably needed (although I'm not sure how many clicks/views it would get.)
I will definitely do something like this when I get the opportunity, some shoe designs can help the swing mechanics. You honestly can’t guess, all you can do is try to share information that might help someone. I think it would do well though, not something that’s covered too much,
