Thanks for the honest review that's a complete deal breaker for me and will stick with my 530e for another few years. It's a shame because these cost cutting measures are going to turn the majority of people off tesla. I expect to see a massive second hand market and huge devaluing of Tesla model 3 when the public realise these massive shortcomings.

This was the reason I didn’t why I didn’t buy another Tesla. I’ve had mine for 3 years with sensors. I test drove a new model Y and it was the deal breaker. Totally useless in the rain. I was dead set on getting another until I did the test drive. Such a shame, it should be getting better. I still believe they removed them during the chip shortage around Covid. Pused those cars out for sale with out it, blagged it’s not needed and now still trying to front it to stop people whole bought cars during that time complaining and wanting it added.

You got no idea Elon and team are always thinking out of the box, and the results speak for them selves. On topic. The most complex thing to imitate and create is human vision. But the first to master it by using millions of users driving cars and the Ai learning from each experience will eventually lead to graphs Tesla being the only man standing in the autonomous EV world. Literally the first to conquer this tech will conquer the world. It will be licensed out to the rest of the world auto makers at a cost. Genius right. That's what they call the long game up

Tesla has never used lidar. They have had radar and ultrasonic in the past, but I think they have eliminated both of those now. I'm okay with the removal of the radar, even though radar has the nice benefit of being able to see at times when cameras can't, but I'm not so sure about the ultrasonic. I'd rather still have ultrasonic for parking. Tesla has I think gone a little overboard with trying to remove parts and optimize costs to the point where quality is starting to be impacted. I'm also not a fan of the stalks removal. I'm a Tesla fan in general; they have done some great work on things like the charging network and jumpstarting the move to EVs; but I still remain critical.
@NicolasRaimo

I meant radar my mistake here, they did trail lidar however, like you am a Tesla fan that’s clear from my set it’s full of Tesla merchandise but I think the brand is trying to save pennies at the sake of the customer experience

@@NicolasRaimoYeah right, that's why mobileye 5 days ago ditched lidar development. That's why model y vision based system is the safest by euroncap test. Sry but stupid take. It takes them time but they deliver it through SW update

When ordering a Tesla you get clearly informed that ultra sonic sensors have been removed. At least that was the case last year. Not saying that's an excuse, just that this shouldn't have been a surprise to any buyer. One benefit of ditching USS in favour of Tesla Vision for the autopilot and adaptive cruise control is that USS tends to get covered in snow and ice and get "blind". The front camera is kept clear by the wipers, so that works better. But for parking the front camera sucks of course as it can not see anything that the driver isn't already able to see.

Was fortunate enough to have an extended Model Y test drive over Christmas. Amazing car, but I bought an Enyaq instead. Reasons? 1. Repair/parts wait times, giving rise to higher insurance. 2. Lack of HW ultrasonic sensors for parking and AEB. 3. Not enough dealers/repair shops for number of vehicles on the road. Very happy with the Enyaq - much easier to park, plus it's also quieter on the motorway and fairs better on rough roads than the Model Y.

When they removed the sensors, I noticed quite a few model Y's with minor dents and scrapes... thanks Tesla for paving the way, but I'll stick with my practical EV that has buttons and sensors and stalks 👍
@NicolasRaimo
@NicolasRaimo 7 месяцев назад
Stalks still on the Y thank god but I suspect when they refresh its design inline with Model 3 they will go, but I've noticed prices for model 3 in the Goldilocks era where its a facelift but still have USS are fetching CRAZY money!

I'm just offering you insight into why Tesla discarded the old tech and moved to vision tech. My reasoning is sound. Hence the need to promote the purchase of Teslas, so we can bring forward and shorten the time to get true driverless cars on the road . Tesla has got this right, Use Ai learning from real time camera information from Tesla driven my millions of drivers to bring about full driverless cars one day. Copying nature is generally the best tech Boss of Nvidia believes Tesla miles ahead of the competition. Due to this fact, that it is using Ai to drive cars by imitating human drivers vision in a camera. It's only matter of time before enough data had been collected. And boom!, over night you'll have a driverless car!

These sensors are dead end. That is why they removed them. They give you advantage now and that is why even some advanced cruise control system of other brands are actually better TODAY, but they have already hit a wall and cannot improve anymore, where with the cameras they can work with AI which Tesla has and the possibilities are limitless and will improve much more.

Nic, I agree with you about some of the concerns with USS removal (as usual, Tesla made the hardware change early before the software was ready) but you are getting very confused here. 1. Lidar has never, ever, been fitted to production Tesla cars. They've used it on a few test mules fitted to a roof rack in California (concensus is it was to feed back to the vision algorithm training). *Radar* was fitted to original Teslas, yes, and started to be removed from some cars post-2020. Lidar, no. Never been fitted as standard nor as an option. Even most other production cars from other manufacturers have never used Lidar. Volvo being the main exception here, as they've found a way to reduce its size and high cost on recent high-end models. 2. "Highlander" is a film. I think you meant Highland, even though we don't actually know that Tesla themselves call the new Model 3 "Highland". It could be a code for something else. 3. Vision processing (i.e. understanding of camera inputs to make the car aware of its surroundings) is 100% not done by the GPU. It is done by the Autopilot hardware, which has two (redundant) bespoke chips designed by Tesla engineering for fast neural network computation. The rendering of that 3D understanding on the screen is just the final step performed by the much cheaper GPU built into the entertainment system. 4. Please don't kid yourself that you can use the "I've been a car salesman for life therefore trust me" when talking about things that aren't core to being a car salesman. History is littered with plenty of "experts in their field" who have been wrong about a lot of things they think they know a lot about. A little more openness to being wrong would go a long way to gaining people's trust. Incidentally, have you tried the RainX solution for your cameras? I've heard it vastly improves the (very real) clarity in wet conditions. Why not try it? My feeling is that USS are not coming back. Vision-only is already improving fast and will eventually provide an overall better experience.

@soklagenhet

Vision literally cannot do certain things, simply because the vision is impaired during snow / wet obstructions. There is nothing to be done with software. Also the things you point out are irrelevant to his points. I wanted to buy a model 3 / model y but I am probably holding because because of how they messed up sensors and stalks. Everything else is great, so it sucks that they had to fuck these things up so bad.

Had a 2023 Tesla model Y on loan for a month. I was really looking forward to having the car but was very disappointed after the first week of driving. For me the car is massively overrated, Tesla vision is appalling and everything through a screen is a pain in the arse. I was amazed how plasticity and poor the interior feels. All the Tesla fans can gladly keep their car, ill buy a different quality EV.

I’d have a model Y if they got Ultra sonic sensors and keep indicators and improved the interior quality there customer service has got worse year and year I think that’s due to there growth and lack of expansion in service centres I do think they realised this issue now and it should improve

I used to work in computer vision research and I actually can't believe that they are relying upon that one technology for safety features in cars. There are so many limiting factors, such as the time it takes for the computer to auto-compensate for sudden changes in lighting, or weather conditions blocking the field of view. Wipers won't be enough to clear the image well enough in heavy rain. Ultrasonic sensors and radar just work much more reliably, and by all means use the cameras to add extra layers of verification (or object detection).
