Seems to me your main problem was you were unprepared and just jumped right in with your attempt. Just as with any paint job, good results depend almost entirely on prep work as well as the cleanliness of your environment. 3M primer93 is a must. You definitely should have removed the molding first. Another friend would have been helpful for placement. I think you gave up to easy.
