Don't Buy Paint Storage, DO THIS!

It's safe to say I'm not the best when it comes to DIY. This weekend I decided to finally tackle something I've wanted to do for a while and build a paint rack that will house all my extra paints. While it turned out ok in the end, there were plenty of mistakes along the way and I almost ruined my weekend with DIY. If you're building one yourself, don't make my mistakes.

If it's soft wood you always need to drill it with a bit smaller than the screw. Then run the screws in. That will keep it from cracking and splintering.

I catch myself doing that too. Even when my drill and bit are sitting right next to me. Doesn't take much time and it makes all the difference. This last weekend I actually added a shelf to my space with nail polish racks. They hold every paint bottle great. For the longest time I had a desk and wanted a paint rack on a wall but there was no wall where I could fit my desk in the garage. So what I ended up doing was taking a big piece of pine wood from my massive pile of spare wood and drilled it into the side of desk. I love having the pine because it brightens up the space really well. I have so much more space now on my desk top. Needed to happen. Sorry for the essay but last thought. When I catch myself rushing a project I remind myself. Take time now and be methodical because I'll be looking at it for a very long time and shoddy work really bothers me when I have to be reminded of it every day or when I'm trying to focus on my hobby.

This was such a laugh! It's a refreshing thing to see a RU-vidr actually show struggle and make mistakes. No fancy workshops and shopping lists of expensive tools and supplies. It's so accurate to 90% of us out there who'd just wing it 😂 Honestly, my track record for DIY is to spend a fortune on all the bits, all the tools, sketching out plans and stuff, then just never getting around to it. So probably never would have actually made anything! That said, I would probably have tried to have slimmer shelves and frame to save on weight and space. Might have had them standing upright and tilted forward a little bit with a lip so they don't fall out and make them more clustered together.

Afew years ago I decided to make myself a paint rack. I basically made a frame from 15mm thick planks, then nailed on a backing from 2mm thick mdf and I used a slightly smaller mdf board to be the ''facing'' of the rack arranged to sit about 40mm from the backing. In Adobe Illustrator I made a mock up of the layout of the circular holes that would host my Vallejo bottles. I marked the centre of each hole, then printed the mockup, layed it over the facing mdf and with a nail I tapped the positions of the centres of the circles I wanted cut out. Then I cut them using a drill with an annular cutter the ones with the diamond dust. The rack could fit over 200 Vallejo bottles. It was very nice and cheap to make BUT....... Every summer usually Im moving to my summer house, so I have to take my hobby stuff with me. As always I forget to take something and its the ONE thing that I need. When there is no hobby store or even a decent art store around you need a portable solution. The fastest and cheapest solution was to buy some sturdy corrugated board boxes intended for comic book storage. They are impressively durable. Then I made some stackable trays from sturdy board. I can fit over 200 colors + primer bottles + small accessories in a quite small box around 35x 25 x 25 cm. It can be easily stored and when Im painting I can have the trays out to see all the colors. Guess what. When I returned from vacations the colors never left that box. Its way more practical than a wall rack that takes valuable space. PS I see an Ibanez (Universe?) in the background. You sir are a man of culture and good taste!
@ThePickleJar
@ThePickleJar Год назад
Sounds like a great solution. I don't often go to my local store to paint. On the occasions I do I just take something simple and a few colours. Lucky enough to have a case from Frontier Wargaming too. That is a great bit of DIY advice though. And yeah, I have an Ibanez RG series, it's my baby.

I actually like the thicker wood. It creates a pleasant gap between your line of paints allowing enough room for some decorative labels so you can 5S them rather than haphazardly looking for a specific color. :-) As for attaching to the wall, I would make a French Cleat for it. You can have the DIY store rip a couple pieces of 12mm plywood into strips with a 45° bevel and hang it on your wall. Make sure you put another strip of 12mm at the bottom to keep it off the wall. That cleat should be plenty strong if you drill it into studs.

I love watching these paint storage builds because I have been able to be inspired to build something similar to each of them, combining different aspects. I like your tower against the wall look. Agreed with you that materials could have been thinner to save on weight. Also wall mounting hardware would have helped. As well, I saw someone using trim molding to create a visual angle to see the paints better for access. I will be utilizing my carpentry degree to make something. All that time spent in school I better! And I wont pile on with the "pilot hole" comment since everyone else seems to have pointed that out. Nice work for not having many tools.

Nice little project, and hey, everyone has to learn what not to do, it's all in the experience. But it's my opinion that its better to do it yourself even if you fail, as I enjoy making things. Those sentences sounded better in my head, and hopefully my point came across and it just didn't come out as rambling, lol. For using screws, it always beneficial to use a smaller that the screw itself size drillbit to pre-drill wholes for the screws to go into. This will help out emensly when putting the screws in, and it takes some of the pressure off the wood as the screw tries to take up space. And I think you did a great job, it looks pretty good.

Get yourself a couple of small L brackets and drywall screws to mount it to the wall. If you can find the studs you could even get 4 and mount above and below (heck you could cut slits in the posterboard and mount pairs on several of the shelves for extra support). As for the thickness of the wood, for anyone considering doing one themselves, the frame is probably good, but you could certainly go thinner for the shelves ... though depending on just how thin, you might want a vertical brace in the middle (or maybe two braces at thirds if you use really thin wood, or make the shelf considerably wider. A second benefit to thinner shelves would be more rows of paint. I'd check prices on trim as that's already going to be finished on 3 sides so you could probably skip the sanding & painting stage except on the frame.

At least one of you knows how to build stuff =) Also if you have a way to find studs, I would suggest looking at a french cleat hanging system for it, they will hold hundreds of pounds, you can still take it down if you need to and they are pretty easy to install. The hardware stores in the US have metal cleat systems you just screw on to the project on one side and the wall on the other.

I did pretty much the exact same thing and mine has been going strong for I think about 5 years now. If you decide to mount it to the wall, I'd recommend screwing a cross piece to the wall for it to "sit" on at the bottom to take the weight, and then anchoring it at the top with some small L brackets. This way all the weight is spread across the bar you put at the bottom, rather than on the screws in the shelves.

tip for next time, if you dont have self tapping screws you can predrill a slightly smaller (pilot) hole to make sure the wood doesn't split when you put the screw in. Your projects remind me a lot of my own, I inherited tools from my pops who wasnt the most organized man, so most of the time when i start a project I usually end up relying on tools that are nearby over what is actually meant for the job.

I know this is a little too late for this specific project, but you can pretty easily prevent wood from splitting by pre-drilling a hole for every screw. just take a drill bit that is a bit smaller than the screw, line up the pieces and make sure the drill goes into both pieces of wood. you need to make room for the screw, or the expansion causes the piece to split.

I made a storage chest like this once. Go to DIY shop. Buy many pieces of board. Have vague plan. At least yours came out looking respectable! Mine is a nightmare even after painting. Cheers!

I used backing board from an old bookcase for mine and I too didn't measure up resulting in some shelves fit contrast paint some don't, and i also have paint bottles sat on top of the thing because its was too small to fit all my paint on

simple tip when you want to screw wood together drill the hole first to prevent the wood from splitting.

I found some vertical cosmetics racks for nail varnish on amazon which are the perfect size for the 17ml dropper bottles and pretty cheap, but I still haven't brought myself to buy them, since I got this nagging feeling in the back of my head that I could probably do it worse and for more money myself... but I would probably like it more too...

I have very quickly outgrown this paint rack, now having more than double the amount of paint, and I'm sat wondering how to solve my new storage issue haha

I like the storage solution idea, however if you had drilled pilot holes before just screwing straight through you wouldve avoided any of the pieces splitting. Looks good though.

I love your cat. She looks like a bandit. FYI you could have avoided screws and just used wood glue. Looks great now though. Some people use nail polish racks to hold paint.
@ThePickleJar

Nail polish racks were the other option I looked at but would have cost loads more for less storage. Wood glue tip is a good one though, good shout

It's all good and well all the people suggesting drilling pilot holes but I see two problems. One, if you couldn't find a saw, could you find a drill and bits, two, adding extra power tools to a project never really seems to make it go any smoother when I've done it. A good build, and if only one or two bits split, I'd call that a win.
@ThePickleJar
@ThePickleJar 2 года назад
It didn’t bother me much as the shelves are all covered with the paint on then anyway, so you can’t see the couple of splits

Enjoyed the hell out of this, and really loved how relatable it is to my experience of DIY. Edit - finished product looks great though, I must say. The chunky shelves look really premium.

Didn’t think things out then? Also when using the saw use the full length of the blade, it’ll be more efficient and cut faster. To stop the wood cracking, drill pilot holes, but you probably don’t have a drill or bits.

I have done far too much cutting with saws similar to this, you have my commiserations! Your overall DIY approach is so similar mine - leap in, buy too much or too little (realise that once knee deep in the project), while also realising that my tools are not quite what I need but could possibly do in a pinch. Make do with the not great tools, rather than go and source a more appropriate tool. Repent later and remind myself that it is actually always worth finding the right tool for the job. Forget all those lessons by the time I do another DIY project.

Sounds like a lot of my DIY projects. I figure any proper DIY project requires at least 3 trips to the store and one new tool. Oh yeah, predrilling your screw holes will help keep the wood from splitting. Drill a hole that smaller than the screw diameter so it still has something to grip, but it doesn't have to push as much material out of the way when it goes in. Not mounting it on the wall was probably the right call. If you had tried to hang it from the foam board backer, it would have just ripped right off the wall.

I use Talon 22mm pipe clips from screwfix @ £4.00 for 100. I just screwed them to a sheet of MDF and place my paints upside down in them. Total cost around £10

I like your idea, might steal it :p , did made a rack of empty toilet rolls, tried PVC tubes, but missed a good saw :D; Went with mdf and on the backside there is reusable double tape (very strong). I love my tubes of Scale 75 artist line hanging with a big paperclip on little nails (it s a nice hack from the 2D artist :p )
