Baofengs, midlands, walkie-talkies on our(Ukrainian) side is used massively in Territorial Defence Groups, self organised civilian groups, with hunting and sport guns, but in touch with local military and police. Sometimes Ukrainian Military are using UV 5(8)r to coordinate with firefighters, medics, territorial defence, police, volunteers, etc, but not in front of enemy forces.

Just another note on the Baofeng AR-152, if you program the radio using the factory software you can open up the 1.25m band.
@Rob2
@Rob2 2 года назад
It is unfortunate that all those Baofeng models are derivatives of the original UV-5R. In the early days, Baofeng also released the UV-B5 radio which is not following this pattern. Some people guess that it is not really designed by Baofeng but is an externally designed type made in license. This radio has a completely different user interface than the UV-5R. It has a rotary dial to change frequence, and a better display. But most important: its receiver performance is much better. You can actually connect a roof-mounted antenna to it and still receive things, while the UV-5R will just be blown away and desensed by strong signals outside the band. It is probably not economically interesting for Baofeng to produce derived products based on the UV-B5, but when you want a better handy it is certainly one to consider. Maybe you should get one and compare it to the other types, especially when standing near to a transmitter site.

The AR152 was originally supposed to be waterproof and the case is metal. I dont know if this is the actual end product but that is worth the added price if you want a more rugged version of the BF. Some of us WANT the OD green brick!

Do not forget to make the triband modification so it can operate on 1.25 meters as well. There is a modification that will allow the radio to operate from 127Mhz to 272Mhz with a gap between 180Mhz and 190Mhz, and 380Mhz to 543Mhz. There is also a squelch modification that make the squelch work wonderfully.

They have come down in price considerably AR152.... 40-60 dollars depending on options. There are better options. A big pro is the battery life. Guys can put this in their car or closest and store it until needed in an emergency. The biggest thing going for Baofengs is the price...They are cheap, they get new HAM's on the air, and they are essentially disposable.....Lost or stolen.

I bought the 152 in a special 2 pack with 4 batteries and multiple antennas for $180 US. The price has dropped for some offerings. In my case, the huge battery capacity, larger screen being easier to see as I get older, and backlit and larger keys to help where big factors, and worth the extra in my opinion. Could I get a UV-5r cheaper? Yes. But once I buy 3 extra large capacity batteries per radio to match the massive ones for the 152, and extra antennas, the batteries alone where worth the extra cost alone. But this is what suites my application best. Others may, and are welcome to make their own choices.

In some ways your missing the point, the AR152 was aimed at the milsim airsoft market, even with its hefty price tag, it is still much cheaper than a genuine Harris or similar. The uv9r pro seems a waste of space, it is probably no more weather proof than a 5r, and requires different programming cables and accessories meaning spending more money for no advantage.

There's an improved version of the Baofeng, by Triumph Instrument - a very keen knock off of the military PRC - even down to the all aluminum casing, VHF, UHF, and low band (10m?) - on ebay for $300-400 USD. I picked up a Baofeng BF H-5 that advertises at 10 watts. I don't have any way to precisely test, but with US made Smiley Antenna I'm getting great range equal to my Icom V-86. I wanted to get the UHF version U-86, but it's only available in the Philippines and Vietnam. Go figure...

Also some of the newest baofengs don't have the FM Radio function because of the global chip shortage! They will say something that doesn't make sense like "Note: In order to comply with laws regulations, Baofeng company will upgrade 9R series walkie-talkies without FM radio function from January 1st, 2022." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QwgonYApKME.html

That radio is junk!! I bought one off Amazon and the radio is deaf(didn't receive good) compared to me 5x3 Btech. I even had a Comet sma24J antenna on it with a stock antenna on the Btech!! Besides the green isn't Army green, its baby S*** green!!! I sent it back!

When radios like this (and other cheap radios e.g. the miniature mobile dualbanders) are deaf it normally is becasue there are strong local signals near the amateur bands that completely desense the frontend. Remember there is no filtering in these radios, there is a direct conversion to (almost) DC followed by a pair of A/D converters (I/Q) and SDR logic to demodulate FM. When the dynamic range of the A/D converters is exceeded because of a strong signal within ~10 MHz they receive nothing on the tuned frequency. So the issue is not "is the antenna good enough" but "is the antenna not too good".

Take a look at the Triumph Instrument PRC 152. It's a bastard twin of the real Harris Falcon, right down to the Aluminum casing, display, keypad... It is advertised to have VHF low (10/11m) coverage and I saw one advert that claimed VHF AM civil air RX. They are now showing up on American Ebay, Shipped from the States. Prices range from $270 & $20 S&H to $350 free S&H "thereabouts". The real Harris Falcon weights 3 pounds. The Triumph is probably close to that. ... I have one of the "new" Baofeng BF H-5s that has the lines of the Motorola Saber. Advertised as 10 watts. I've got no way to precisely measure. But with the U.S. made Smiley Antenna (I can't praise those enough) I can cleanly hit the same repeaters with it that my 7 watt Icom V-86 can. I don't know anyone who works for Smiley Antenna, don't get any "discount", but they make after market HT antennas. Single band only, and cut to a specific part of the VHF a UHF bands i.e. the "150" version covers 145-155mhz etc. They actually have GAIN ! U S. pricing is $20-22, Shipping is like $10. They come with interchangeable bases SMA F, SMA M, SMA Vertex, SMA Motorola, BNC, TNC, the Icom & Motorola commercial . They offer regular and stubby sizes

FYI, Bao-Feng make radio-control toys, which is how I intercept with them. I would not recommend any Bao-Feng product, as seemingly they are a only a more popular third-party IP-ripoff company. Quality is exactly as to be expected from a Chinese company "trying" to put on a legit front. (ie; It "works")

M3 is the original Foundation class in the UK and works very well for QRP and low power VHF/UHF users. There are plenty of M3 operators who have decided not to move to other licenses. So, what do you really mean?

I'd say none of them are worth it, really. I'd rather have a UV-82, that has dual PTT, has extended battery available and uses the standard Kenwood connection. The 152, if anything, should have a huge battery life.

Don't be an elitist.. These things have their purpose. I have a Yaesu as well, but I will be adding a few of these to my bag to program FRS/GMRS/Color Dot/Etc. so I can talk to my non-ham family and friends while hiking/camping/roadtripping and the like. As a ham, I do agree that this would not be my primary HT radio, but it's fine as a low cost backup or as radio to hand out to non-hams on the fly.

@@handyhomefixer2025 I'm referring to the Receiver quality, good brands have a more sensitive receiver and a better selectivity. Today, the good brand HTs are costing close to a chinese.
