Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
It's no secret that I love a good dethatch on the lawn. Removing lawn debris helps keep the colors vibrant and also helps the grass grow thicker. So many benefits to dethatching a lawn. Today I unbox the new battery operated model and show you the difference between the gen 2 15" model and the new battery operated 3rd Gen.

I know this is an old video, but I bought a corded one after watching this because it was cheap and light. It has really worked out well for me, just started my second season with a spring rake, then scarify before seeding.

On the Ginja's advice, I purchased the corded Sun Joe last year + used it aggressively on my lawn. I then over-seeded using high-quality KBG, covered it w/ peat moss using a rented spreader, and pushed the growth w/ applications of N-Ext's liquid fertilizers + bio-stimulants. I won't lie: my lawn looked rough last fall. It was still recovering when temperatures dropped enough to slow/stop turf growth. I wish I'd taken photos to document the recovery, though: my lawn looks terrific this year. While I credit the liquid fertilizer spoon feeding and 2x/week mowing for the fast recovery, dethatching + scarifying the lawn to remove dead/matted grass, mulch/twigs, rocks, and seeds allowed the seed + products to get to the soil. Thanks for the great content, Ginja!

Are you going to evaluate other cordless models? I do read the most positive reviews as being the Sun Joe 24V -X2 DT S 15 which is the most recent model. It's $349 on the company's website with 15% off but out of stock. Amazon is less expensive but make sure you get the one with the 2 batteries and dual port charger. There is the scarifier /dethatcher that comes without the batteries and charger.

My only complaint, and it’s not really about the scarifier, is poa triv (I think) gets wrapped tightly around the reel. The runners are like small strings. When the reel is full I have to disassemble and try to clean it. That process takes longer than going over my small yard.

That’s unfortunate. My cordless one worked out well. I used it to overseed this year and my lawn is coming in great now. I have two sets of batteries so I was able to switch them out when they were drained. I immediately put them on the charger so they were charging while I used up the 2nd set. I did one pass early spring on the highest setting to pick debris off the lawn. Right before I overseeded I did two passes dethatching one way and scarifying the other. I used the middle setting for dethatching and the lowest for scarifying. I did notice to get it started I had to press the button and squeeze the lever from the side the button was on.

@@pestandlawnginja Just a question. With the over-seeding project I did in Spring, do you think the grass/root growth will be established enough to scarify in Fall? I have been watering about twice a week to work on deeper roots. It came in nice, but I'd like to loosen up that soil to help it grow more together. I also have a little bit of moss coming back that I'd like to rip out.

Let's not forget that the batteries may start off ok with great runtime (not for this application though), but if they were cheaply built, there eventually will be continuity breaks and possible cold solder joints on the buss tabs that join the cells up into the pack's P and S configuration. The cells can be perfectly fine, but the pack will either lose a whole row of paralleled cells giving up capacity, or it will lose cells in series giving up its ability to operate the loaded motor altogether as the available voltage would be insufficient. Let's face it - a typical consumer is going to toss the pack, and possibly the whole device, in the garbage instead of attempting to recycle it. I had to warranty a Dewalt battery that was covered for 3 years- they put it on me to figure out how to recycle the faulty once they sent a replacement. Gotta love this forced push to cordless!

I'm confused about dethatching.. isn't a late fall thing for KBG in Utah? your grass seemed to green to dethatch in the spring? or do you set it higher to just remove trash? Also is mulching grass and leaving it on the lawn good to do in Dry Utah? I collect it and compost it.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 2 года назад
dethatching is solely for the purpose of remove debris off of a soil surface. it can be done anytimme during the growing season. I use it for topical debris cleanup and also removing dead grass off the soil surface. I always use the low setting on the dethatcher because I like to be a bit aggressive with it. As for mulching, best thing you can do to a lawn but it has to be done right. If you can see the mulch behind you or pick it up after you mow your not mulching properly and it won't break down which causes the debris debacle

Does the battery operated one really have less scarifying blades? By my count the corded has 11 while the battery has 7 offset blades which is actually 14
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 2 года назад
I should have explaned a bit better. They are offset by a tiny bit but the consistency of the blades every 1" on the older model I find more beneficial.

How long can the corded go safely without risk of electrical issues? I would need a 200 ft cord to reach my whole lawn. Would you recommend the corded for a 20kft lawn or should I go with a power rake, in your experience?

will ryobi batteries fit? Sunjoe does have that 2 year warranty and they sent me a replacement after my 85 year old dad had his fail. The little screws fall out letting the roller drop down which will burn up the motor. Supposedly they have beefed up the design there but I have not opened the box... Dad says he will rent a big one next year.. I rented a big one at HD and I got 8 big 40 gals bags so how many sunjoe bag changes is that? 200?

@@pestandlawnginja @2:15 shows it pretty clear. left has 7 tines. with the offsets making 14 slits. on the right old with straight tines, 13 slits. ONE MORE GOODER. but on the new each slit gets half the amount of tine on dirt action. not sure if it matters due to RPM speed.

Love the Ginja. - In my backyard. Timp is beautiful back there, I think you're like 4 streets from me actually! lol fun. I should find your house like a stalker and make sure my lawn is better than yours all year, how bow tha? Cash me outside -- On a serious note, ryobi is shizzing the bed. Within the last two years whoever is calling the shots is making some really bad decisions. Their products are getting cheap and brittle like Harbor Freight type bad. - Super angry about that as I have thousands of dollars of Ryobi stuff that is suddenly breaking and falling apart. Their repair dept and service center is agonizing and Ryobi just doesnt care about their customers once the product is sold. Very tempted to buy their new detatcher, but I am betting it wont last past two seasons. Recently I bought their new 21" cross cut. Loved every second of it until it broke. Didn't even get a full season use. Some kind of control module somethin or another. - Had to send it in to Ryobi. They send it to their RCL which is some third party TTI company. That way Ryobi tells you "sorry its at TTI, we cant help you" and TTI says "sorry the part is on back order for 4 months, we can't help you" - Can you imagine buying a brand new lawn mower then suddenly told "too bad so sad, we don't care, we are going to keep you hostage until we get tthis part from China one day 3 years down the road" - IT was a rough battle. They are finally sending me a new lawn mower after they lied about time lines and I had to get home depot involved. - Funny thing there, TTI claimed they didn't know any timelines and therefore they were not sure they are inside the 90 day warranty fix it timelien or not...... uh huh. So I called Home depot. They have a reporting system that collects data from TTI. Yup, you read that right. TTI creates the update, then sends it to Home Depots system. So I took the data from Home Depot that was created by TTI and send it to TTI. Once they saw that I had that information, they immediately gave up the battle and are sending me a lawn mower. THis took me weeks of battling and months of waiting. Ryobi is turning into an absolute joke. I sure hope they get their stuff together because they have some really great ideas. Anyway...lawn on.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja Год назад
you wouldn't be the first one LOL Sheesh man. its a shame these companies won't just send the parts that need repaired. flowzone does that with their battery powered sprayers and its a lifesaver!
@chadlye61
@chadlye61 Год назад
@@pestandlawnginja since all of this has evolved, sounds like theyve just had massive issues getting parts in from China. Home Depot has started to wind down their RLC program (Repair) and that is no longer available because of it. Making customers mad. Ryobi is sounding like they're just opening boxes and pulling pieces out of new products to send to customers instead of repairing just to make customers happy. Lesson here for Ryobi: Don't make garbage products that break and then make a plan that your repair service will be outstanding. Perhaps make a product that doesn't blow up after 12 uses. Nonetheless, they ended up getting it taken care of after weeks of battling. I won't take my posts down for that fact, but I'll personally give them another shot and perhaps buy a few more toys. We'll see. I do love a few of their tools. Hope they get their shiz together. On the lawn front: Potassium, light dusting of step one ifa and azomite went down just a week ago. Bring it on neighbors. Lets do this.

Hey Ginja, thanks for this! I actually have the battery powered one on my wishlist to purchase next month. Now I know to get the corded one. I'm following your previous video on completely killing my lawn and starting over. I used Killzall and am watching as everything dies (mwahahaha). I also need to do a treatment for ants and crickets. Should I use the pesticides before or after I plant my new lawn? This may be a dumb question, but I'm a total newbie that you've inspired to actually give a crap about my lawn so I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance!
