I’d say the Kiyohime or little princess is a fast grower, especially if it’s in the ground. As you say it makes a lovely natural bonsai. Mine just spreads sideways like a canopy, I have a few and notice different colours depending if it’s in more or less direct sun, also gives air layers quite quickly.

Interesting you should say that, I found an example of one for my next video that’s in the ground and it’s like a carpet!

I think it is also worth the investment to buy them in bigger sizes. Rather than buying a 1 gallon, spend a bit more and get them in a 3-10 gallon. In Texas, I find that every cultivar I have purchased has far exceeded the standard stated growth rate. My Mikawa has grown 8-12 inches every year. It loves our climate. I keep the vast majority of mine in pots, and they still exceed their average stated growth rates.

Ducked into B&Q on my way home this evening, they've really broadened their range of Acers this Spring I picked up a dinky £4.50 "Butterfly" and a £9 "Metamorphosa", neither are grafted, so great for my Bonsai collection 😊 xx

@@PumpkinBecki Thanks for the reply Becki, I think Bonsai take too many years to grow.

@johngrainger9098 You can develop Bonsai from readily available nursery material, you don't need to start from seed. I'm about to turn 50 and I'm just restarting my Bonsai journey. There are lots of us Bonsai RU-vidrs out there and we're always happy to help xx

I planted my seriyu in the ground this year and it’s doing well. I’m hoping I can use it to shade some of my potted maples. The mikawa is on my to get list.

Hi, I have a acer that looks very much like a Wendy except that it cascades, it has a greenish trunk but red branches, have you any idea of what it could be. Last year it went mad and put on about 40cm of growth.

Well I've given up on the photo because whichever tutorial I look at they don't match what's on my screen, Tablet, Phone or PC, I'm just a 76yr old sod, so it's probably me. Anyway I have a good solution, I have named it as a new species "WEEPING WENDY" 😂😂😂😂😂😊😊😊😊😊

I actually don't get this. How can you expect a tree to grow within such small pots?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
Acers hate wet roots so if you grow in small pots they will use up the water on a consistent basis. Once the pot is full of roots you then repot a size or two up. This produces consistent growth without dieback from a damaged root system. 👍

Another great video, what acer would you recommend which is narrow in growth but can take full UK sun?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
Great question! Three spring to mind Ryusen, Hubbs Red Willow and koto-no-Ito. You could stake up any of them and achieve a columnar effect. Ryusen is naturally cascading so one the required height is achieved it will grow down to the floor 👍
