Im a huge nerd and disrupt fan, and this is disheartening to say the least. However, when he made that first video about selling his channel it struck me as odd immediately but I didn't know why. Thank you Coffee, your hard work in exposing bad financial scams and such is valuable and you are appreciated. I hope you know that.

The 10 Million Dollar studio joke could have never in any timeline been more perfect than it is right now, this is actually unbelievable.

The weird thing is that if he went to his fanbase and told the TRUTH...I am sure fans would band together to help the guy out. There is/was no need to lie...weird society we live in..either people fear to tell the truth or we are taught that no one tells the truth unless they have too.

Just FYI to anyone who hasn't watched the Disrupt channel lately - this guy has been let go due to what he did, and his co-founder and the Disrupt team continued without him.

as someone who adored Disrupt's content, the unique editing, everything, I was genuinely disappointed and confused when I saw that video. I could smell it was a scam from a mile away, and realizing a genuinely awesome channel fell down such a trashy path was really... unfortunate.

I was so confused when I saw the video, sucks to see him going down this path...

seeing the amount of money that's already been donated is super concerning

I really feel like "I am 500k in debt so this is what i want to do to pay it off" would have gone over just as well

This whole Disrupt thing was a sucker punch in the gut. I thought that the guy that makes that type of content would be wise enough to not fall into that debt.

If he was a RU-vidr I really liked, and he simply said “I’m in a lot of dept, so if you want you can donate here”, I might’ve donated, but here I would’ve probably lost all respect by now

It's such a shame to see such a good channel like Disrupt go down this road. The sad part is, I feel like if he had just come out and been completely honest with fans of the channel and disclosed the part about being 500k in debt, people would have been willing to help.

The crazy thing is; at least it makes sense in my mind, if he was upfront about being in debt & had a plan on how to use that money to pay off his debts in addition to creating the studio then maybe this wouldn’t look so bad.

It's insane that this happened on a perfectly normal, well-respected documentary channel. I'm so used to hearing about this stuff from 'lifestyle influencers' or 'money gurus' who were clearly grifters from day 1. It's sobering to realize that anyone you trust could turn around and start trying to take advantage of you if you don't keep your guard up.

This is such a heartbreaking thing to see since I LOVE this man's documentaries. But boy, I gotta accept that creatively amazing people are capable of this

Couldn't imagine "investing" in a RU-vid channel. I don't mind donating a small amount depending who it is but if it's an investment I would rather put that money into an actual company that'll be around long term.

At current levels it would take over 444 years to recoup any investment ($100 would pay $0.225/year). And your ownership would be further diluted if he raises more funding. That is NOT an investment, it’s a donation. This guy clearly knows nothing about business or finance if he honestly thought this was a good idea to try.

I unsubbed. His content goes deep into topics that aren't the easiest to research by just anyone. That means as a viewer you're trusting that his research is above board. The trust is the lynch pin, IMHO, and he's just demonstrated his ability to lay out the FACTS is SKETCHY at best.

Why invest in one channel when you can own a piece of all the RU-vid channels in existence by investing in Google?

"Path A vs Path B" is classic snake oil sales tactic. Disrupt makes amazing videos, but that does not mean they are making amazing choices.

I was so baited out when I saw that video, glad to see someone cover this and explore the sketch. Disrupt has ups n downs. Their video on Havana Syndrome was terribly researched and has only contributed to the massively misunderstood and misrepresented reality

So sad to see this happen to a channel I love. Hope he comes to his senses.

He could have actually raised that money by selling an online course to his audience. It doesn't have to be shady. Just honest value that will benefit his audience is enough. 1. Research skills 2. Growing a RU-vid channel 3. Managing a RU-vid team There are lots of online content he could have produced and marketed to his audience to get that money but he didn't. That tells me he's a bad business man all round. He's lucky to have that partner.

Yeaaaah Disrupt always struck me as all style no substance. Pretty much every one of his videos I've seen he describes some stuff very oddly in a way that has absolutely no meaning but sounds hacker-ish. It's clear that he wants to appear like some authoritative security researcher or something but doesn't actually have any expertise beyond reading some wikipedia articles. This whole situation seems the same way but instead of just being deceptive about being an authority figure, he's trying to put flashy visuals and ΛΣＳＴＨΞＴＩＣ over a straight-up scam. Very disappointing. Takes my trust of his content from "meh at least it looks cool and is mostly accurate" down to absolute zero.

Ironically it feels like if he'd just been honest to his fans about paying a debt to own his own channel, people would've gone ahead and given him the money anyway. If he'd framed it like "Hey, we're in debt and need to pay it back so we have 100% ownership of this channel you like" and then given some benefits to helping him, it would've been fine.

Disrupt’s production values are fantastic, but I don’t think he knows how to effectively structure his video’s plots. I usually just walk away feeling like I learned very little because of how much he jumps around

I could never get into Disrupt. Having 2 (or more? I don’t quite remember) stories that don’t connect tolled in that weird sitcom style A, B, C,… plot way was just to jarring and confusing.

Disrupt isn't my favorite channel but this definitely irked me and I turned the video off a few minutes in. When he said "restructuring" I just knew... Glad you peeped too makes me feel more confident.

His soothing voice seems to make me overlook the visual sight that he is sly. Lesson: always watch with sound off to read the scammer.

Given the inexistent amount of financials presented in the offer video, me and other average viewers were indeed quick to go through the statement to realize how much of a scam that was. The thing is, a lot of his fans are credulous and were happy to put their money in to "help", even after warning them with the numbers and the hidden facts they still think it was a good decision! That's what I find the most disgusting: the offer predates on the generosity of small guys that trust him and don't know better in terms of investing. Extremely deceptive. Good breakdown of the Discord situation I completely missed, you are doing god's work and I really hope your efforts (and ones in the audience) will put a halt to this operation.

People shouldn't turn patreon into an investment model. The money donated to you by fans is what should go towards your content. Not someone trying to profit off a very volatile and Unpredictable revenue stream such as RU-vid.

I stumbled onto one of their videos a while ago not knowing about them previously and found it incredibly interesting, until it switched part way through to an entirely unrelated story about a different subject entirely, and proceeded to switch back and forth with no indication that it was doing so. The video then ended without finishing either topic and I was just immensely confused. It felt like they were trying way too hard to be flashy.

This is exactly an oxymoron here because the fact that Jacks entire channel are videos of where he talks about hackers & scammers but he’s actually the biggest scammer of them all! This is just sad & pathetic.

Interesting story! Truth of matter is there are always 2-sides to every story (as we all know). That being said, the problem is once lawyers get involved (and the courts) things get ugly and EXPENSIVE very fast. Then, everything written in future RU-vid videos on discord servers could potentially be used as further evidence in future lawsuits...it just gets very ugly very fast. Bottom line, get everything in WRITING when you are even thinking of starting any type of business. Especially, when you have partners (even if silent ones). No one wins when courts and lawyers get involved....

I used to like Disrupt until he released the video on “The Universal Law of Human Behavior” where he just quoted a bunch of CS Lewis and talked about God as if those are even related to sociology, anthropology, or psychology and the one on the Mad Gasser where he pushed the opinion that the Mad Gasser actually existed when it’s one of the most well supported cases of mass hysteria ever and is completely unrealistic. Those videos really woke me up to how truly poor the research was

And even if he was genuine about investing this "I need to capital to invest and make this youtube channel great" - It seems stupid. If your channel is popular and grows organically you will be able to improve equipment, quit your day job etc. But there's no guarantee that a channel will be very popular because you pour money into it. It's not like a factory where you can count on a certain result because you get a new machine.

I’ve always seen him as schemer. It started with stunts in VRChat/SocialVR.

Jack is gone and his co-founder is back on wheel. I think you should update this at least with a pinned comment. Because reading from the recent comments from this channel people think Jack still owns Disrupt and he is still scamming.

It’s a security. Selling unlicensed securities is illegal. He would need to register it, there are disclosure and accounting standards, annual reports needed, etc.

Noooo I love this channel. I was confused if it was a real channel or like left over footage from old school TV. But they have such a fun and unique style.

I'm shocked at how many comments knew who this was. I've literally never heard of the guy or his channel. It may well be he just made a big, dumb public mistake but I would be surprised if they can reconcile after this, Jak played his hand. It's a bit hard to walk back into the office and go, "Wow, what a crazy time you and I had, huh?"
