You don't need to completely delete Instagram. Try following these tips to get a better relationship with social media. the tool: Screenzen, here’s the link: www.screenzen.co
Couldn't agree more. I deleted IG off my phone, and I found a good balance once a week where I'll actualyl check in on my desktop just to check messages from friends, which only takes me like 10 minutes. And then that's it. Rather than checking multiple times a day everyday.
but what if most of my feed on youtube or instagram is about some new science tech, anatomy, medicine, geography and history? i just start doom scrolling on these topics when i could’ve studied, but i still felt i learnt something new? and when i don’t watch some of this i just feel left out and stuff. any tips?
Having social media is so hard for an artists. You need it to build up a following, a career, to be inspired and to keep on creating but at the same time you also doom scroll and it’s this constant depressing cycle where you don’t know if it’s worth it to leave or to stay because you need it and you want it
yeah I agree. Honestly I don't know what the solution is there but I'll think about it. maybe having a friend manage your accounts/curate inspo for you ?
If you’re a creative and need social media for marketing/etc., maybe it’s time to separate your art accounts from your personal accounts? Many people I know benefitted from it. If you’ve already done this and still feel shitty about social media/don’t see your habits changing, it’s time to delete your social media and use it solely for business.
I try to post from my computer and not have the app on my phone... if I need to post a story though then I'm kinda in trouble since that can't be done from PC.
To solve what you're saying, Instagram decided to put strangers you don't follow in your home page. You'll see them unless you manually go to the homepage that only contains the people you follow. It's absolute nonsense, as if they want you to feel bad about your self.
They dont want to make you feel bad, honestly. Simply they want you to keep scrolling on their app for the ads, and if a side effect of that is that you feel bad, well, that's too bad.
Honestly, the best part of getting out of doom scrolling was leaving my fear of missing out, like moving on from wanting to understand the newest trend, or getting to know niche memes and understand the newest joke. Like earlier my friend was talking to me about this new Tiktok meme and it felt kinda healing to realize that my mindless scrolling came to such an end that I don't understand irrelevant social media trends
that’s honestly a good point! i definitely think that like putting in 2/3 hours a day to keep up w the trends online is not the best. I’m happy for you!!
I don't use Instagram, but I am heavily addicted to RU-vid. The only thing you can do is to get yourself motivated for something, or else you will find yourself stuck in an infinite loop.
I saw another video recently about lowering screen time by someone called Maxwell and they recommended the chrome extension "unhooked". It basically removes your RU-vid recommended feed!
wow. i am actually so relieved. at how many people have the exact same experiences as i do with social media/instagram. like we are all collectively on the same journey of being so exhausted by this constant unnecessary battle with technology and its addictive apps, realizing what's really important in life, and coming to a point of desperately wanting to do something about it to live a better life. i hope society wakes up to this and decides to do something about it to get life back to when it was good. :)) xo
your humour is great. also the randomly drinking alcohol (shots, bottles, etc) have not gone unnoticed. this is also great advice. hope your channel grows.
i deleted instagram more then a year ago, my life did not get 1 percent worse. The thing that it gave me was more time and way more focus on myself. That is what the majority of people lack.
I have been off all social media for over 2 years now, my only exception is youtube occasionally. It almost kills me to be around people who are constantly on their phones scrolling, it is what we have come to lol. But I have noticed so many improvements since then which is why I recommend everyone should try stay off social media too: - I have more time to do things I like and to look after myself (reading, studying, meeting people etc.) - I also don't feel disappointed with what I am doing in life anymore. Comparison with celebs or even mutuals is always the thief of joy. - No more fake stuff, in the real world it's all REAL! - I don't fall prey to pointless trends on social media or have the feeling of "missing out" on something. - I feel more authentic as a person, less like I am regurgitating things I saw online. Your video makes me feel less alone in being offline, so thank you!
that is true actually, i have gotten off socials too (kind of. I don't have any on my phone anymore but my computer has it and I will occasionally hop on for maybe a minute before realising theres no point. I also watch youtube, maybe because I'm still at school but I don't know.) and I feel all the stuff that you do. You would also feel the same way but I feel like without socials you see more of the world y'know? like on my school bus I like to look out the window and just think about life and I will sometimes see something cool or interesting and I'm usually one of the only ones who DO notice. I'm still struggling with some issues in this field and I honestly wouldn't mind if I did stop it all altogether (would video games count? I hope not, I love them.) I think it would make things better. I'd also love it if the world followed the same path but I don't really see that happening.
Totally agree! It's hard for young people to fully commit, but once you do you get to appreciate the small things in life! Hopefully people become more mindful in the future! Also, video games are way better than social media because you are using your brain :) @@gggumball
Two weeks before watching this video, I uninstalled Instagram, deactivated RU-vid (uninstalling isn't an option on Android), and set my phone to greyscale. Not counting time spent on RU-vid Music, which varies wildly depending on my daily activities, I went from 6-7h PER DAY on my phone to just 1h45 in the first week. This week, my average was 3h35 including YT Music, which probably amounts to about 2h, a slight increase but far better than before. This video only goes to reaffirm that making the changes I did were a step in the right direction, for my mental health and clarity, for my personal relationships, and for my free time spent doing more productive things than doom scrolling. Thank you.
Ya just delete it. It doesn't matter. Most things people post online are pointless anyway and no number of restrictions ever kept me away from the endless scrolling and "relaxing" dopamine hits I would get when using the app. I finally made the decision to switch to a flip phone and delete my account. I don't feel like I am missing out on some random thing that seems important to invest time into just to seem relevant. It's quite ironic that we need some type of disconnection from our own reality to seem "relevant" in conversation. Also I agree that if the people you follow, you don't have their phone number, then what is the point. If you don't actually want to talk to them then why do you feel the need to follow them at all? Anyway, just wanted to rant, this was a great and very open video about the struggles of a weird reality that we created for ourselves.
I tell people “if you need me, you have my number. If you don’t, you either don’t know me well enough, or can find someone who can give you my number”. Living in the present moment takes away the fear ✌️
It was the transition from tea to hard liquor for me 😂 Also, this video game me so much hope, I just started a RU-vid channel and when you joked about having 8 subscribers, I felt a soft encouragement to keep going!!
I agree that building self-discipline and installing stricter social media "timeframes" makes you being so much more in control about this addiction. It gives you a sense of achieving something as well. However, it can be a real addiction - and being aware of this and deciding whether timeframes are effective or if stricter measures, like deleting apps, are neccessary is up to us to evaluate. Very nice video!
I follow friends, family and event pages in my area to know what's going on in my city and it's SO incredibly helpful. For other social media apps, I deleted Twitter and only follow the things I'm interested in on Reddit (fitness, language/culture, food stuff and other hobbies.) It's cut my screen time in half. I am finding myself reading more, focusing on the shows I am watching instead of needing to have Netflix up + Insta or some other thing. Going outside more often and getting stuff done around my house instead of feeling like I'm physically unable to tear my eyes away from my phone. I'm more social because I see what my friends are posting more often and it makes me want to talk to them, I could go on and on. All in all my attention span is slowly returning, I'm not anxious when I'm not doing several things at once, and I feel SO much better.
Fantastic video quality. This having been my first video watched by you, I was shocked when you said “I have like 8 subscribers”. I looked and was shocked to see such great production quality from such a small user. It seems you truly have a passion for it, continue you on and it’ll go far for you!
I have literally turned notifications off, This step has really helped me from getting unnecessarily distracted from my work & save up time, and become more productive!!
I feel the opposite way, I ONLY follow people I don't know. If a friend posts something on instagram I feel a lot more jealous/fomo-y since I can compare my life directly to theirs, but only following account for my hobbies and interests doesn't give me that same feeling because in my mind their life is so far removed from mine there is no comparison
this is a great take ^^ I basically only follow accounts that let me keep track of my hobbies, stuff I genuinely enjoy (which doesn’t help the scrolling addiction lmao)
I'm currently at the stage of only using Instagram in Safari. After watching this video, I'm amazed at how much more you can do to get your social media consumption under control. Thank you for this incredibly helpful video!!
I don't know about safari but on google, you can add a chrome extension on called anti gram where you can limit things like viewing the home page and only being able to see things like messaging. I also deleted instagram on my phone and I will deffinetly keep it that way
I came to say this too. The app makes it so much more addictive! I tried deleting the app many times but end up re downloading it and loosing hours to scrolling. Using it via safari makes that seamless smooth experience non existent. It means you can still check in but I found I’m much less likely to stay for a long time
This has been one of the most life changing videos I've watched in the last years. I used to be on my phone for 6+ hours a day and after watching this video and using screenzen and all the other recomendations, I got it down to about 1.5hrs a day. I've been able to delete youtube & tiktok and I barely ever use instagram anymore. Thank you so so much.
This is a fantastic video, especially considering the fact that this is one of the first. You clearly have a gift for videography, editing, and video essays more generally. Your videos are both entertaining and informative. In regard to the video's content, itself, I think the strategies you give for moderating Instagram use are great. I think they're much more realistic than everyone deleting social media, and I think they'd help someone to continue using social media in a beneficial, as opposed to detrimental, way. Love it!
yes! My idea is that it's probably better to delete, but no one can do that, realistically. much better to be honest and do something that works than fail and quit something thats in theory slightly better. & glad you're liking them. they prolly won't stop for a while :)
these are some great tips! for me i find reels and tiktok to be super addicting and i wish insta make a feature so you cant see reels but ofc theyre never gonna do that. i find deleting the apps to be best for me and i can feel a difference in how anxious i am. i also deleted youtube off my phone because i would switch between videos when i was doing something and it was also weirdly a source of anxiety. i find that replacing listening to videos with music (especially jazz) and audiobooks to be the best for me. it makes me slow down and chill. im still trying to take away this audio crutch, but its one step at a time. ive also found other hobbies that i can get into a flow state with that make me feel better. so tldr for anyone trying to decrease their phone time, try music and audiobooks and hobbies as a replacement
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been struggling with trying to cut time down with social media. Tbh I think the main reason instagram keeps me scrolling is bc they keep showing “suggested” posts/reels after every posts of someone I follow. I’ve noticed that overtime I would rack up on followers and just start following people who have interesting content and then later on do a large removal of unnecessary accounts. It’s gets annoying that they keep showing funny, creative and interesting things that appeals to me but trying to keep me on there for hours. So I’m going to try your approach and I feel like it will help me a lot in getting more important things done.
A year ago I totally changed the way I was using instagram by trying the first four tips. I’ve never been in a healthier relationship with social media since then. I saw your video just now and it made me think that was a great decision, so thank you :)
this is so real. ive definitely found deactivating to be my best friend but also getting rid of the majority of celebs as well and only keeping the 1 or 2 I actually care about seeing. i definitely tried to use the iOS screen time features to even out my time but even then it’s like, do I really need 30 minutes a day doing whatever it is im supposed to be doing on that app. im in another deactivation era because i got so sick of that damn app. i find it’s a lot easier to control my time on other platforms like snapchat (bc i literally snap 2 people for like a minute a day), Facebook (literally only use it for uni) and tiktok (10 mins top) but idk what it is about insta that makes it so easy to doom scroll.
When you come back to IG (if?), the two things I would recommend are: 1) Screenzen 2) Instagram: instagram.com/tristanrsaucedo/ but seriously, if you can stay off it's definitely better. I can't deny that it's addiction and easy to get lost in tho
Took the plunge and just deleted it straight up. Why waste my own time pretending I want everyone to know my business, might as well free myself now. Thank you so much !
the best part of the videos is the amount of different glasses you use! :') ... but totally agree with that you are talking about, i decided to take a social media detox recently as I'm struggling with some mental health issues and all i was seeing was everyone else's perfect lives, perfect jobs, perfect home, perfect everythinggggg and it's a struggle!!
this was actually so helpful dude this popped up into my feed right after i deleted insta in a feverish haze. it felt really nice to see someone share the same feelings i have and still be ok and on the path to finding solutions. it seems likes such a trivial thing but it really can control the way you go about your day. thanks for making this and sharing your insight
I've been in an apathetic rut and using instagram as a means to avoid/ detach and the tip for using ig as a grandparent makes so much sense I realized having a goal for only tapping in 10 times a day or even having to wait a minute is enough to be like nah lmao thank u sm i appreciate this so much
your video is the first I see that talks about this, so thank you so much! I've also been deleting and redownloading the app but I feel pressured to keep it since I'd be missing out from all of my friends. the main reason I keep on deleting Instagram is because of reels which leads me to overstimulating and I hate it so much. it's the same reason why I deleted tik tok early on but to see that other apps like instagram to copy tik tok makes it so much worse. I'd be checking one reel and it'd ended up me watching countless reels for hours on end without me realizing bc I feel like I've been hypnotized. I have no time to spend on other things that are actually important because of doom scrolling. although now I'm trying not to delete it just bc of one feature and manage it better since I still need it to get updated on my friends' and love ones lives. so thank you for the helpful tips, it's comforting to know that I'm not alone :]
i have a social media check-in at the same time everyday from 7pm-8pm. I don’t use social media outside of that. It helps me stay informed in an intentional way.
I don't often comment on any videos whatsoever but damn you're underrated, plus the timing couldn't have been better, absolutely perfect, great advice great delivery. I'm subscribing
You speak so well! Thank you for sharing this with us! I'm sure this can speak to so many age group struggling with an addiction like this. I've struggled with this and I've learned two new things from you!
i had successfully gone off radar before i started my new graduation, but now, being a communication student, it got incredibly harder. to use social media as a study object and source of information alone is a constant challenge. it takes all my strength not to fall prey of something i'm supposed to see as a tool, not a cage.
Just randomly bumped into your video. Im gonna make a totally out of nowhere comment here but you know what, I just loved the different aura of your video that your room gives off a 90s hotel room vibe and this video as a whole has totally different energy. it felt such a refresh also feels like a nostalgia too. On one way this video feels like its taken in 2004 and Im having the biggest nostalgia. Idk whyyyyy!! Its like nothing I have watched for such a long time and believe me Im watching so many youtube videos a day. Immediately subscribed !
You nailed it, that is what I exactly feel when using tiktok. I've seen a lot of guys having fun on the things I also want to do and experience, and here I am rotting in my house. I know I am just a student and I cannot help to compare myself to them who are also just student but still having the time of their lives, excessive buying and luxurious moments. It makes me feel really bad about my self.
I GASPED. when I saw the triple side button switch between gray scale and normal colour settings. I used to turn my phone screen to black and white but the problem always was that I love taking photos and I need to see colours when I am taking them !! right? and switching the setting every single time the sky looks pretty was so daunting. but you literally enlightened me with this thing. thank you tristan like for real
Thanks for the helpful tips! Your videos have been a game-changer for me in managing my Instagram usage. I can’t stop laughing tho at your hilarious approach to tackling social media addiction while sipping on various drinks in the video 😂😂😂 Your unique style and valuable advice make for an entertaining and informative combination. Keep up the great work sir…
I can't believe I came across this video the very same day I deleted Instagram. I've watched both parts and I will definitely try some of your tips! Thank you so much for making them and for making us feel less alone in this challenge.
I simply deleted instagram due to how negative the people on there are. I can’t scroll through 3 posts without seeing something racist, homophobic, sexist or just down right negative. It gets annoying and draining so I decided to depart from the app 2 weeks ago. Not to mention my subconscious mind compares to other peoples fake lives and makes me feel worse. Deleting it was the best decision I made but I understand your point. Great video :)
its crazy that this video got recommended to me since i decided to quit instagram in the beginning of the year and its almost over, my reason for quitting was that i realized when i went to shows, concerts, parties, get togethers and stuff i was always the one with their phone in their hand. Constantly recording or taking pictures then when i think back about how it went all i remember was just seeing it through my phone not even living my life anymore. Eventually i decided to ask my friends how they do it (where they dont post or some dont even have an account) where its not on their mind. some helped some didnt but i decided on just taking break for a week then before i knew it the week was over, then decided if i could go a week i could go a month which i did then turned into 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 months. i wont lie i did start posting again (like a grandpa as the video says) like once a month now so mainly only things i find interesting or experience no longer shit posting, sharing posts, memes. might not be for everyone but im glad it worked for me.
Thanks for the screen zen recommendation. I’ve been looking for something like this and it seems promising! I don’t actually use insta, or snap, or TikTok, but I am using RU-vid and discord too often, so I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
this is so useful for me, I do suffer from mobile, social media and scrolling addiction, I tried a lot to cure it , and I will diffidently try these tips. thanks
Somehow I've done almost all of the tips you mentioned! I never understood the point in following celebrities, especially when all they do is post photos of themselves. I had a look at my feed and it's a mix of artists, bands I like, comic writers, and photographers, or shows I like etc. lol. It's a lot more interesting! But lately, I feel that my problem with Instagram is the timesink of Reels. Sending "funny stuff" to your friends seems to be this thing you're just expected to do?
First Video I saw from you. The fact that my algorithm recommended this should make me think about my Instagram habits lol. Very well done Video. It was perfectly paced, I never felt bored throughout the Video. The tips in general were a little bit too radical for me, but a good starting point to create my own new habits. I really liked the Intro of you making a tea in jumpcuts while the music was playing and the title was showing. It really made me focus on the topic afterwards. Keep on going. I saw you getting like 30 subscribers overnight (In Europe) so keep on going!!🎉
thank you! yes having fun trying youtube and liking it! try using screenzen for a more reasonable goal! no reason you can’t set a hard limit at like 1.5 hours with 30 opens at 3 minutes or something!
This is the best video ive seen for this subject. Ive done these like only following people ik. It works. No need to follow people who would never talk to you or know you exist.
I feel so called out rn. These tips made me realize for the first time why i don't want to quit Instagram and why i keep coming back... a part of me apparently thinks what’s going on in the lives of some strangers is important and i never acknowledged that formyself.
Alright I have a similar take on this. So I follow celebs but surprisingly I don't feel sad that I don't live their lives so I have a slight different way of using social media. 1. Find out what accounts make you use Instagram depressed: It could even be a friend, or a ex-crush. So I have a friend that went to study at my dream university that I couldn't enter. Also following my ex-crush, same thing we are close but she posts Bout her relationships often 2. Use the mute function following them was a pain cuz I'd feel depressed that I was not as good. Even though I'm quite close to them I still chose to mute posts so I don't see her post about them and I generally feel better.
yes i feel that. def there’s celebs who are way way better to follow than friends. it’s way more complicated than i expressed in the video but you’re doing the best thing which is thinking about what works for you
I've been wanting to do a social media detox for ages but I can't delete instagram because of my Etsy business on there. This video helped a lot thank you!!
You always come back to the point that you open the app when you’re bored. I wasn’t bored for a second the past 3 years, because I have hobbies that immensely take up time, for example gaming & dnd, making music (playing instruments), I’m writing on a fantasy novel, and of course things like meeting up with friends etc. take up quite some time. You can start a step earlier by not getting bored in the first place.. Boredom only exists because people don’t know what to do with themselves imo.
As I kind of merged my insta for yt and personal, I just turn off the notifications completely and set a limit for like 30 min a day. Also I follow japanese ppl bc I am learning japanese so whatever few minutes I spend on insta will somewhat productive
I liked a lot of the tips here, but what advice would you give to someone who wants to do RU-vid but also needs social media for promotion and all that? I always found it difficult when people say to delete social media when if you run a business or a channel, social media is pretty paramount in its growth.
dude honestly. no idea. i’m no expert. maybe if my channel blows up (like it is rn) i’ll have to learn that and i can tell you then. but rn i feel like i don’t have a clue
@@tristansaucedoyt It's alright bro, I juust followed all your rules and damn it's great, I used to have dread opening instagram because it always made me feel like I have a bad life, but now that I muted those I don't want to see and unfollowed a bunch of random celebrities, it's now exciting to just open just to see what your real friends are doing
aye glad its working! Another is close friends and the accounts you wanna see? I might do a follow up with those tips and others but just play around with it! there's ways to make it way better
Also, Don't post too many stories or pics of yourself reasons being 1. Your privacy is not respected online, people can misuse them. 2. The anxiety related to validation from others will also greatly reduce. Next, do the same with all of your other social media platforms like X, snapchat, etc. My personal opinion is to delete snapchat account. You don't need to know what's going on in someone else’s life.
Great video! I actually don't use Instagram for any of the things you mentioned. I think Instagram is a very underrated platform for education, which is my main use for it. I follow music accounts and musicians to learn from them, and I also follow math and science accounts for their educational content too. I really don't use Instagram any differently than I use RU-vid. Mostly for education.
this is a good idea. I'd mute you (too many high quality posts you celebrity) but I love harassing your stories and thats what I'm optimizing my instagram for :D
Now, when Social media is the new smoking, and a lot of people is tryig to be more present in real life , i think is a little bit easier as long as you really want a change. at the begining is really hard, specially when you try to search at yourself were you are not . As a Chef , is really hard to carry out a honest creative process thinking with instagram in the background, for all of you out there struggling with creating art in any form , a book will be way more usfull . Great video
It was already crazy that the title and the situation of the person in this video is incredibly relatable, but the top comment also helps me to realize that a lot of us are in the same situation. I am also an artist looking for a solution in a world full of people who don't understand the severity of these terrible platforms the damage it's doing to society. Not only is everyone addicted but they've now created a world in which artists need to keep up on social media to have any chance of being successful. It's terrible
