CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Moe Greene (Alex Rocco) threatens Michael (Al Pacino). Michael warns his brother Fredo (John Cazale) to never take sides against him...ever.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Popularly viewed as one of the best American films ever made, the multi-generational crime saga The Godfather is a touchstone of cinema: one of the most widely imitated, quoted, and lampooned movies of all time. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star as Vito Corleone and his youngest son, Michael, respectively. It is the late 1940s in New York and Corleone is, in the parlance of organized crime, a "godfather" or "don," the head of a Mafia family. Michael, a free thinker who defied his father by enlisting in the Marines to fight in World War II, has returned a captain and a war hero. Having long ago rejected the family business, Michael shows up at the wedding of his sister, Connie (Talia Shire), with his non-Italian girlfriend, Kay (Diane Keaton), who learns for the first time about the family "business." A few months later at Christmas time, the don barely survives being shot by gunmen in the employ of a drug-trafficking rival whose request for aid from the Corleones' political connections was rejected. After saving his father from a second assassination attempt, Michael persuades his hotheaded eldest brother, Sonny (James Caan), and family advisors Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda) that he should be the one to exact revenge on the men responsible. After murdering a corrupt police captain and the drug trafficker, Michael hides out in Sicily while a gang war erupts at home. Falling in love with a local girl, Michael marries her, but she is later slain by Corleone enemies in an attempt on Michael's life. Sonny is also butchered, having been betrayed by Connie's husband. As Michael returns home and convinces Kay to marry him, his father recovers and makes peace with his rivals, realizing that another powerful don was pulling the strings behind the narcotics endeavor that began the gang warfare. Once Michael has been groomed as the new don, he leads the family to a new era of prosperity, then launches a campaign of murderous revenge against those who once tried to wipe out the Corleones, consolidating his family's power and completing his own moral downfall. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winning for Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), and Best Adapted Screenplay, The Godfather was followed by a pair of sequels.

I love how when Mo Green brought up talking to Barzini, Michael immediately changed the subject and focused on Fredo. He didn’t want Mo to realize he made a costly mistake. no Mo Green knows he's in trouble, first when Michael reminds him that the Corleones bankrolled the casino, knowing that Michael and maybe other families suspect him of skimming (like Bugsy Siegel) and Michael is genuinely trying to muscle him out or worse, he nervously straightens his tie. he doesn't realize what a mistake it is to mention that he talked to Barzini, but as soon as Michael says "is that why you slapped my brother around" he realizes that word is somehow getting to Michael and New York. meaning he is screwed lol, since "straightening out" the son of a don is already a punishable offense. so he tries to minimize it and even Fredo knows enough to try and come to his aid, and then try to get Tom to fix it.

You must remember the beginning of the Godfather when he was a child. He lived with violence all of his life. Even in New York, there was no guaranteed someone was not going to kill you so the Godfather started to plan ahead and create his own family. Despite Michael wanting to be his own person - there was a need for him to be part of the family business. The family was not going to survive with Santino or Sonny in charge because of his temper would get him killed. As for Fredo, he was the weak link and not smart at all. This is why Michael was the only one from the three boys good enough to follow in his father's business. Hagen was also good but not an Italian which other Dons would not trust or respect him.

I'm sure Moe is scared. Look how agitated he is, angry, screaming at the top of his lungs, breaking things, while Michael is calm, cold, talks quietly and smokes his cigarette.
@antonymscalia3924
@antonymscalia3924 9 лет назад
Essie G. Moe isn't scared, he's described as a hothead and he acts accordingly. When Moe hears the "you straightened my brother out?" line, he looks at Michael incredulously and says "HE WAS BANGING COCKTAIL WAITRESSES TWO AT A TIME!! Players couldn't get a drink at the table, what's wrong with you??!!", in other words, he can't believe that Michael can't fathom what a complete worthless dumbshit Fredo really is, and he also looks at Michael as beneath him ("I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders.") Moe Greene is modeled on Bugsy Siegel, considered the founder of Las Vegas. In this scene, Moe Greene isn't afraid, he's _underestimating_ Michael, and he's pissed that Michael is so cool and calm when in Moe's opinion, Michael should be giving him more respect than to offer to buy him out (in the scene before this Moe says to Michael "You buy me out?? No, I buy YOU out!!").
@bendavid4596
@bendavid4596 4 года назад
Antonym Scalia that’s being scared. Reacting that way is a defense mechanism. Mikes calm was terrifying to Mo because in most cases, Mo would get a reaction like what Fredo gave him. But unlike fredo, mo was scared. Hence why Michael didn’t get slapped but fredo did.

@@bendavid4596 wait, there's a big difference. Fredo was his employee. Michael was there to talk business. Moe knew he couldn´t treat him like Fredo. And remember this: "You goddamn guineas really make me laugh". He insulted Michael just because ichael respectfully told him he was unlucky in the business. He felt threatened and disrespected for the simple fact that Michael wanted to buy his casino, and lost his temper over his hurt ego. He was a hothead, as Roth said in II, and that seemed to be a completely normal reaction in him

I'll be honest from my perspective. When your running a BUSINESS everything is STRICTLY Business. Yes, you have to straighten things in order for your business to run well and FLOURISH. FREDO, was slacking off and NOT doing his JOB, I mean. There's nothing wrong with what he was doing but he did it at the wrong time at least do it on your break time. But from Micheal perspective he thought straighten him out or slapping his brother round meant that he does not respect TBE core Leon family because they have no more muscle. But at the same time he should've not smack a grown man like credo but maybe he should've handled it better instead of smacking him. But overall business is business. But I guess every family has their own rules or special treatment wise.

Moe Greene is very aware that with the assasination attempt on Don Vito causing him to temporarily step down and relinquish alot of his power in order to bring back Micheal back after Sonny's death that Barzini is now the Boss of Bosses. Moe spoke his mind about the Corleone family not having the same kind of muscle as before. Moe thought Micheal was a joke, that's why he spoke out like a true tough guy say " Do you know who I am, I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones while you were going out with cheerleaders!" Michael made him an offer but Moe forgot he's a Corleone. Moe feels confident that siding with Barzini will make the Corleones back off him and allow him to stay in business. The way Moe and Fredo act remind me of Sam Rothstein and Nicky Santoro.

In both the Godfather films, characters are defined so perfectly. Now take Mike as an example, he always had the habit of repeating sentences sarcastically clearly stating with his delivery that he hated whatever it was.... " You straightened my brother out ! " " You talk to Dad about my future. My future. "
@michaelmorton5698
@michaelmorton5698 3 года назад
Repeating Moe's statement was basically, "My brother is poor at decisionmaking, I grant you; that doesn't mean you get to treat him like he's your kid when he misbehaves."

Saw Pacino speak at an event. He truly believed that Michael was cold as ice. He was a Don for gods sake. You don't ever cross the family. Fredo was warned. He paid the price in Part II. Pacino said that he never bought into Michael feeling remorse in Part III.

I wouldn't have remorse for those even in my family if they betrayed me - as we get older we get more annoyed over those that disrespect us so Al saying no to feeling remorse I believe him. Michael would not have felt remorse but more angry for having to deal with a family member that was a handicapped instead of an asset.

@@angelacarleton9575 "I wouldn't have remorse for those even in my family if they betrayed me". You don't know it. At the end of the day, family is family, it's your blood. Michael was capable to kill his own brother for the same reason why he lost everything he loved. If you were betrayed by family, maybe you could even kill them, but years later you most probably couldn't avoid guilty feelings, because you're human

I think in GF3 it is very clear that Michael feels guilty for killing Fredo. With the danger of what happened with Hyman Roth so far behind him, he was left with only a dead brother. The scene with him confessing to the cardinal makes it very clear he feels terrible about it. You could say that maybe he did that just to get the cardinal on his side to take care of the bad guys stealing his money, but I thought it was sincere.

I buy into the remorse because he lost everything. Maybe if kay stuck around then it wouldn't have affected him as much. Also one of my friends said Michael was like who he was in the beginning. Also let's remember his father would never approve of what micheal did adding on to his guilt.

Al Pacino playing Michael Corleone who is calm and collected but you can tell when you've annoyed him is more intimidating than Tony Montana who is a loud mouth and speaks his mind, even though Tony will jump to killing you on impulse, Michael planning your killing from the moment you've wronged him to the moment he decides to give the order is more scary

If not the fear here, it's the sincerity in which he tells Fredo you're my older brother and I love you. That's what makes it cold, because you can see that he deeply loves Fredo, but is willing to kill him if he takes the wrong side again!
