The link between getting a tattoo and the long-term effects on health are not widely known. This video is to discuss the possible negative effects of getting a tattoo.
Some of the common complications of tattoos are well known. Such as infections with hepatitis, HIV with use of contaminated needles. My primary focus of the video today is the long-term effects of tattoo inks
During my research I was able to find several reports of ink complications, infections, toxin effects, scarring, burns, chronic irritations, and much more.
Getting a tattoo, places a huge burden on our immune system, activates immune cells which can trigger autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis, lupus, lichen planus and many others.
Getting a tattoo often leads to what is called a type 4 or delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

Just want to thank you a lot for making this video. I believe my autoimmune conditions are from my tattoo and it is impossible to find any info on this. I am in the process of getting my tattoo removed; but it is a long, expensive and painful process. Respect to you doc, and please make more videos if more comes out!

Thanks for your comment. I am sad to hear that you are having autoimmune problems. We have been seeing more of these cases. Unfortunately, the Tattoo removal process can exacerbate autoimmune conditions as Tattoo ink gets broken down into much smaller particles with a laser which can cause increased inflammation in the early stages of Tattoo removal. Definitely, discuss with your doctors first to see if this is the best possible solution to your problems.

Seen this in my drs office today . Most of this information is useful. The rest seems Iike your trying to scare people out of tattooes. My boyfriend had owned a tattoo shop for 25 + years now I tattoo and am covered in them. I never have had health issues due to a tattoo or seen any in my time there. If you do the proper research on the shop and artist and what type of machine and equipment/ inks they use you should be safe its your body why would you not do the research theres too many shady people doing it and everyone wants a deal untill they catch hep c. Pay for quality and you will get quality. Also advice on a small tattoo is bad if you want to see detail you need to go larger I am an artist . Any good artist will tell you this. And the tattoo machine your showing is old. We use rotary machines now. Another sign of a good shop. Do Research. you would on a dr doing surgery why not a tattoo? There's a huge difference in shops charging $10 for tattoos compared to someone who has standards and charges $250 an hour.

Hi Rhiannon: Thank you so much for your comment. I am delighted to read that you found some of the content of this video useful, and I appreciate that you took a moment to write a review. Tattoos are among the oldest forms of art on record. With nearly worldwide mainstream acceptance over the last few decades, significant progress has been made to ensure tattoo clients are as safe as possible. I agree with you that the risk of complications to a client's health is much lower when being tattooed by artists who take their craft and the safety of their clients seriously. As a physician, I have to separate the mainstream popularity tattoos are enjoying, especially from highly qualified artists, from the medical data that shows getting tattooed, even in 2022, is not without risk. My only intention is to educate the viewer about the negative aspects of tattoos. To be clear, I am more concerned about the potentially harmful impact ink has on the body rather than the process of getting tattooed. We live in a very toxic world, full of pollutants we can't easily avoid. The downstream effects of injecting hydrocarbons and other chemicals directly into our tissue can cause multiple health issues. Since you work on the other side of this issue, I admit that there have likely been vast improvements in the application of your craft that I don't know about. On the other hand, I assume that you are not seeing what I see from a physician's perspective working in a hospital, a kidney specialty, my primary care and regenerative medicine clinic, and my medical spa. In the last two years, I have seen multiple clients who had health issues caused by tattoos. Many tattoo artists mix their ink with unsafe chemicals, making the problem worse. If you'd like to learn more about this, I have linked a few case reports for you and others below. cen.acs.org/articles/94/i33/chemicals-tattoo.html www.medicaljournals.se/acta/content/html/10.2340/00015555-0542 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4411590/

Hi sun, thank you for your comment. Our understanding of lupus and many other autoimmune disease is still very limited. I am happy to hear that your lupus test is negative. Wish you all the best of health.
