Don't Get Ripped Off! Beware of These Counterfeit Gibsons on eBay!

If there is one thing that I HATE, it is seeing people getting scammed and ripped off while pursuing their passion or hobby. If you bought this guitar on eBay and need help gathering supporting evidence for your eBay/PayPal case, please feel free to reach out. Let's get your money back.
I am constantly on the look out for more guitars to review and I see counterfeit / replicas / Chibsons ALL the time. Usually, I will send a nice message to the seller stating why the guitar isn't what they think it is. Unfortunately, it is very time consuming to type out all of the details so not every message comes across in the right manner.
Most Chibsons have a 2000 or 2005 serial number. This is the first I've seen with an 80s serial number. This is very frightening to me. While I don't know for sure WHERE these guitars were made - they certainly were not built in Kalamazoo, Michigan or Nashville, TN.
I informed this seller that the guitar he is selling and the one he sold were not the real deal. Despite now being educated, he is still refusing (at this time) to remove his listings. Seeing all the bids on these guitars upsets me, so I made this video to help protect the innocent.
Please share this video around! I don't want anyone to be scammed. These Chibsons are pretty good - they have a correct nashville styled bridge and fret nibs! Yikes!

@@snoolee7950 Lots of people are honest, but most of those who are avoid conflict and won't bring things like this up. It's necessary, though - fakes ruin it for the rest of us *when* the fakes are sold as genuine. I'm not in the crowd that believes $250 chibsons cheat gibson out of money - people buying those are doing so instead of buying an indonesian cheapie. But the jerkwagons trying to get more accurate guitars and sell them to suckers as real ones should face criminal penalties.

I bought a Chibson and removed the Gibson logo. I got it cheap to use as a practice guitar. Plays fine, not quite Gibson level in any way, but not bad. Has most of the issues you mentioned yet has a good neck and strangely good pickups. I never wanted to use it publicly until I got rid of the logo. Now it has a sticker that says 'Hell' in place of 'Gibson' and it feels okay to rock it anywhere. I gouged the word 'fake' on the back so if someone tries to sell it after I die they will not be able to misrepresent it.

@@wiseguy9202 Yeah I ordered my to actually say "chibson" but it was gonna take an extra month because they were about to go on some holiday so I just let them ship the chibson as is and ill remedy it in a similar way that Mark did. I have no intention of playing in public so it doesnt really matter as long as i dont sell it i suppose. ill prob brand it "fake" in case it gets stolen lol.

I almost got taken last week on Craigslist. Fortunately for me I was suspicious of a very low price. So I did a little research and found out Gibson never made a lp with three screws in the truss rod cover... That one was easy for a novice like me trying to buy my first Les Paul standard... That experience and your video sent me back to Guitar Center to pay retail price.... Thank you so much for all the good information.... You have a new troglodyte...

I've been looking for a Gibson SG year 1971 because it is the year of my birth, I've never actually owned or bought any vintage guitars and my only experience with Gibson is the Studio Les Paul I picked up at my local guitar shop at long and McQuade. This video is fantastic and I truely appreciate you opening my eyes to all this counterfeit stuff because I would hate to spend 2 or 3 grand on a guitar only to buy a counterfeit, I'm a working man on an average salary so it would really kill me inside.
@9imack

The biggest problem with the 'Chibsons' is they really do vary enormously in quality, depending on factory & price. Many are actually made in the same plants that are licensed by Gibson to make Epiphone guitars & parts, whereas some are faked Epi's (yeah, makes no sense to me either lol) so, whereas obviously you're never gonna get a guitar to rival an authentic Gibson for $400, you can pay extra for a decent shell (one piece Mahogany body & neck, real Maple cap, not veneer like on an Epi) & upgrades like an Ebony fret board etc, to purchase for a project guitar, which might eventually rival the Epiphone once it's finished (although having said that Epi have really upped their game lately). If you do buy one from China though, don't try to sell it on. Firstly, it's illegal to sell a fraudulent trademark (whether you're aware it's a fake or not!), so if it has a 'Gibson' headstock & it wasn't made by Gibson, you can't sell it & secondly, it's a real dick move as only a beginner would probably be fooled & that guitar, once bought would be worthless!

These fakes are very worrisome to see. Usually fakes have 2000 or 2005 Serial Numbers - these are the first I've seen posing as 80s models. They are good enough to fool many people that are not as intimate with an older Les Paul. They have nibs and they have the correct-looking bridge. There are a lot of other red flags on these guitars as I explained in the video, but they might not be as apparent to other shoppers. These were certainly not made by Gibson at any point in time. Please be aware of these guitars. People are bidding real prices on them! If you bought the other one and need help getting documentation proving it is fake for your eBay/Paypal case - please feel free to reach out to me for free help. facebook.com/troglys www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-1980-Les-Paul-standard-Absolutely-beautiful-tobacco-sunburst-finish-OHCS/142704156851

A good way to spot a fake is looking at the wings on the headstock as well, most fake gibson have the headstock made out of one piece of wood, Gibson headstocks have 2 pieces of wood glued to the sides.

I've played 7 Chibsons before. One was so good that I couldn't tell the difference between the real SG and the fake other than the Chibson didn't have a number on the back of the headstock. The pickups are usually microphonic, but some of them are pretty good.
@bobby9727
@bobby9727 6 лет назад
Also a good way to figure if it is a fake is that fakes use a allen wrench to adjust the truss rod while Gibson uses the Gibson socket wrench to adjust the truss rod.I have 2 Chibsons and never intend to sell them and one of them has my name on the headstock ,it is a semi hollow lp style i think gibson calls them Florintine with the F holes.

I would like to point out that I have a genuine Gibson SG Naked and the knobs are off. I also looked at another SG Naked and the knobs were off just the same way as mine. So, sometimes Gibson isn't always on point when it comes to cosmetics. I just thought I'd put that out there so people don't only use the cosmetics to determine a guitar is fake. Great video, I hate to see people get duked by this stuff.

Gibson cuts on a CNC machine. If they aren't aligned properly, then they aren't meant to be (maybe SG's are different?). A Les Paul is always going to line up or it's fake.

I bought a real Gibson case with it ( 250 all in.. guitar and case) and am happy w/the case more than the chibson. Counterfeit guitars has to be a major concern for Reverb as well as all resale on line companies. But with guys like you out there keeping an eye out for these people it makes it easier to bid. There are some things you just can't change - like the body shape and knob placement - without modifying the guitar extremely. It would require refinishing the guitar and at that point financially it wouldn't even be 'worth it' to the criminals

True, I suppose. I just think about a poor kid saving up his money for a real second hand Gibson and getting burned while thinking he's actually getting a good deal. To do that to a kid really is predatory and criminal. Why can't this guy just sell five or six chibsons and advertise them for what they are instead of trying to pass one off on a poor kid? What's even worse is that he has 100% positive feedback.

I made similar comments a few months back on a Facebook Marketplace fake that someone asked about in a guitar group. I explained to the woman that it was a fake and I began with the assumption that she was duped and I explained that it was obviously a Chibson. The bridge was wrong, shape, headstock, logo, I could go on. She asked me how I could possibly know and I sent her pics of the many headstocks, bridges, etc of the Les Paul's I own. I also sent her pics from Epiphones as well as Chibsons to show proof. She accused me of trolling her (I had not called her out publicly at this point), and told me that she would block me if I continued to harass her. At that point, I was safe to assume that she knew and didn't care or was choosing to wear rose colored glasses. Either way, I called her out on it. Instantly, the guitar community went after me! They called me a bully and said that if someone was going to spend that much $$ and couldn't tell a fake, then they deserved to be duped! After that, I stopped doing this kind of thing. I commend you for it, but geesh, the community can be damn fickle.

This is good information. Another red flag on this particular seller or any seller for that matter is the fact that it says on the page that the "Seller does not accept returns". When spending a significant amount of money on a guitar the seller better accept returns if something isn't as advertised. But to blatantly come out and say you will not accept returns, after so many other red flags, is just a deal breaker in my mind. If I'm going to drop over 1k or more on something I would like to know I can get my money back if something isn't as advertised.

I think he is shilling his bids too to get the price up as all of the 8 bidders are "Private Listing" buyers...so he and one friend (or he could have more than one Ebay account) could get the bid bumped to where he wants it to be, then all it takes is one legitimate bidder to make a bid and the guitar is sold. That happens a LOT on Ebay and why I seldom buy from there anymore....

It is actually a federal offense to knowingly sell one of these as the real thing. I bought a Chinese LP last week that is not branded as a Gibson, but is so close to my real LP in body shape (proper horn, depth of body, one piece neck, etc) that they are really getting good at faking these. This one was just for fun...Antiqued USA flag motif on the front of it ,5 ply body and headstock binding, single ply neck binding, proper knob placement, etc. But it does have the 'tells' like slotted bridge studs, no binding nibs on neck and a few degrees less headstock tilt, plus the thick poly finish. It actually has all the bells and whistles my real Gibby doesn't, plays well right out of the box, intonated right, good fit and finish...all for the grand total of $165 delivered. So for that low money they are making them closer and closer to looking like the real thing, expect more on Ebay being sold as the real thing as they keep getting better at it.

Look at the bridge width compared to the pickup rings on a Gibson about the same. Chinese ones are much wider. Plus the rings mounting holes vs the pickup adjustment screws that's is also very noticeable

The G on the headstock is almost never straight on a chibson. The edge of the g should be a straight line. Also the “wings” on the headstock should be there if it’s real. The headstock should be three pieces which can be seen even through paint if you catch the angle.

I hope you order a Chibson on Ebay man, you'll never regret it. You can actually put "Trogly's" in the Headstock with a Gibson Font Style. Prepare your gibson hardware and parts(e.g: pickups, nut, bridge, knobs, and new wirings) Before and After changing parts, please make a video. Thanks man

This is a new thing from Gibson starting 2014 .. "Serial numbers 2014 to present. Gibson's most simplest system was introduced in 2014. A nine-digit serial number stamped. The first two digits indicate the year, the rest is a serial number for all guitars produced that year." I know it doesn't apply here but it is interesting to know.

Thank you for putting up this video. I was scammed by a Craig's lister a few years ago into buying an '07 chibson standard, he took me for 1300$. It was my first and last attempt at buying a used Gibson. Now I'm stuck with this POS reminder hanging on my wall.

I saw a chinese Fender stratocaster for sale on eBay. He was advertising it as a USA guitar. You could tell because logo looked little off but the big giveaway was that it had those cheap string trees you get on cheap guitar. If he'd just put better quality string retainers on like a USA strat it would've been difficult to judge. Hope no one bought it 😣

Ooh thanks for sharing your expertise with us! I luckily bought some nice guitars from Ebay but I bought a vintage reissue which wasn’t in the description. I like the 1974 Jazz Bass reissue but the way it was worded I thought it was a real 1974. Well $1,600 later ☹️ I should have known

I’ve been interested in buying a les Paul lately, and have been checking various internet sites like reverb, ams, zzsounds, GC, and the like. I’ve seen quite a few on eBay that I’ve sent emails about but have gone no further. I’ve also noticed several from Japan and Hong Kong that were similar to what I was looking for. However, I’m very reluctant to make a purchase of this magnitude from a foreign country, especially with so many fakes out there. If you hadn’t pointed out the inconsistency in the serial number of this fake I never would have known. I was only looking at the 1st and 5th digit. So thanks for that. What’s very troublesome is if a legitimate serial number is duplicated. The made in the USA stamp was another clue I never would’ve known about. I think I’ll stick to my local reputable dealer instead. I thoroughly enjoy these videos and would love to hear your thoughts on a chibson copy. Thanks for all your work on this.

I've reported about three so far and eBay never takes them down. I'm serious so people need to know what to look for. I'm a collector, you can see my boring videos of guitars like the Gibson Fort Knox les paul and Fender Jeff beck Strat etc on my channel. But one guitar that I did manage to get removed was by a seller who didn't know he had a fake for sale. It was a small pawn shop type thrift store seller who removed the ad after I contacted him. He probably unintentionally overpaid to someone acting desperate for money and would sell it for peanuts like $1,200 or something and then thought he was getting deal and could resell for easy cash around $4,000. His guitar had many issues but the most obvious was that cheap Chinese/Korean fretboard inlay plastic. The second issue was the bridge was clearly a large post Korean/Chinese type. Also the glue seam on the maple top was a veneer and not fit properly, you could see an untidy seam with an extra wide swath of glue line in a portion of it. The other thing I did was I copied the serial number and did a Google search for it and voila, I found other past sales using the same serial and forum posts talking about their fake Chibson they bought. Apparently the Chinese will use the same serial number over and over again. the guitar was supposedly a Jimmy Page 90s model signature guitar which it wasn't. One guy I reported listed a Gibson Black beauty and it was a fake, the bridge was wrong, the serial was blocked out and he wouldn't give it to me in an email. he was also rude and basically told me to screw off. The pickguard was wrong, wasn't the correct number of plies, the fret inlays were not MOP, they were standard acrylic style but that cheap Chinese/Korean plastic again and the logo on the headstock was too low from the top as well as the screened les Paul Model logo wasn;t placed properly. it's sad that eBay won't take the ads down. I think they can't tell if what I told them is correct or something. That Black beauty had almost $2,000 in bids and it gutted me. I sincerely felt badly about it.

It is annoying when eBay won't take the ads down. Most times that I reach out to a seller and let them know the guitar isn't legit - they do the right thing. Thanks for sharing your story!

I bought a Les Paul "Suprise" (it was labeled supreme) for 250.00. U.S. I knew what it was when I bought it. It was a pretty nice guitar, played well, sounded good. I got my moneys worth and when I sold it, I sold it for 250.00 . The biggest giveaway was three screws in the truss rod cover, and of course, the serial number. There were other signs, but that was enough.

I have a gibson and a chibson but when they arnt together its hard to tell the fake until you pick it up the difference in feel and build is unreal... chibson feels and plays like a toy compared to the real thing.
@bolerdweller
@bolerdweller 4 года назад
If you set up that chibson there really shouldn't be any way to tell the difference, other than the obvious aesthetical differences, they have similar specs, mahogany neck and body, maple top(not just a veneer) and the neck even has a scarf joint which will make it stronger than a Gibson neck. Straighten the neck, level and polish the frets and set it up. It's not like Gibson doenst come without its share of factory QC issues as well lol.

I mean the first thing I saw on the 81 Standard one is the open lettering on the logo. I know in the Norlin Era there were a lot of times where they had the 50s logo instead of the Norlin one, but on Standards and Customs I haven't seen that logo on any from 70-85 and I've seen it on listings listed up to being 1988 guitars. That doesn't mean anything for sure, but that's what I saw first.

That second one the shape was closer to a tanglewood Starfire pro 1 which is basically tanglewoods version of a 1960's Gibson lp its just not 100% when it cones to shape but for a affordable alternative + the fact the Starfire pro is now considered rare & valuable there just as hard to come buy as a 60's Gibson lp or so I've found anyway, yeah I really want to review that Starfire along side a 60's Gibson

I assume if some replaced the rings to Gibson or another USA brand the mounting holes would not line up. I believe the holes could be visible if the pickup rings where changed but not sure. I am almost positive if someone replaced the pickup rings you could take it off and see 8 holes. I don't have a ghibson or I would confirm this.

Thanks for educating the general public. I was at the pawn shop, and the owners do an OK job of filtering out the fakes. If it's a nice looking fake, they sell it as WALL ART.. . not as the real deal. I've helped them filter out a few of their fakers.

Great video, you are a good man ! I actually, own more than a few gibsons and chibsons. My number one paul and es 355 are heavily modded chibsons, cloned to near perfection. I have dozens of guitars, never sold a single one, collected them my entire life and still have and play my first, a magnum 72 japan strat, cloned to fender specs. I cloned them for my own satisfaction, not to cheat someone. Chibsons are perfect for a heavy relic job and to gig with ! Great alternative to giging a real one that can be worth more than ones life ! They really should not fake the serial numbers. The real issue is about ones integrity, not if these should be made or purchased. Gibson should be concerned that a 250.00 guitar is even close enough to be compared to a 5000.00 one ! With 250.00 in up grades and effort................you can have TEN beautiful guitars, for the price of one. Not a bad thing, in my book. Great job Austin, with your channel, one day, you will be THE authority on vintage and new gibsons. You should hire an in-house master tech and provide a complete repair and restoration service to your customers !

I buy and sell Guitars, i have enough knowledge to save myself from getting ripped off. I was watching another YT video from Know your Gear and he asks his customers permission to brand the guitar FAKE , that's if he happens to come across any. I think i may take a leaf out of his book,however like yourself he is a luthier and chances are he would be more likely to see more fakes. It must be soul destroying to get taken for so much money but it's just dishonest and low.Like i said i buy and sell guitars and if the unfortunate does happen then i will brand it fake. Iv'e learnt quite a bit from you over time so thank you. I get goose pimples watching you pull some of them out of their cases.Great channel.

Great video. You mention the orientation of the made in USA stamp. I have a Kalamazoo '77 Artisan Les Paul with the stamp in the same orientation as you showed here. After watching many chibson vids I have no reason to believe the guitar is fake. Everything on the guitar has age to it, metalwork pitting, binding color and it even smells old!. I would be happy to send you pictures of it, I would value your opinion.

This may have been an obvious fake to someone looking in person, but I could see getting fooled over pictures through eBay. Especially if the seller is using a lower to medium resolution camera, and/or taking the pics a little farther away than optimal. As for the serial number, Gibson has done a poor job with them over the years and it's confusing! Good thing Trog has a sharp eye and knows his stuff!

Maybe you already have done this but I suggest you do a video on how to spot fake Gibsons, you did a good job on this one, good enough I downloaded it to save in my files for future reference!! I know you probably know this but there is a good chance this guy really believes his guitars are legit, maybe he got ripped off without knowing it.

I have seen some listings on eBay from Japan that don't seem quite right. They will be Gibson Historic Les Pauls listed from different sellers, that are using the same exact photos. Many times these might be asking different prices but, same exact photos. One of the sellers actually had a couple of negative feedback comments that stated they had listed some high end guitars and never sent the merchandise and said the seller was fraudulent. Yet, eBay was still letting them list items. I have seen multiple listings like this before. Different listing using the same exact guitar photos. I personally would see that as a red-flag. Have you noticed this??? I think it is awesome that you would be willing to help the person who got taken get their money back.

It's legit. There are many 'brokers' in Japan that list the guitars of other shops. When you buy the guitar from them, they buy it from that shop and then send it to you. The only issue is if that guitar gets sold before the broker can buy it. Sometimes that's the only way to know about rare guitars being for sale - or the only way to get one shipped to the US. I've bought quite a few guitars that way
@jalguitarman

Oh, I see. Makes sense then. I seen listings like that when I was on the hunt for a Historic earlier this year and I didn't feel overly confident about the legitimacy of them. I was afraid if something went wrong it might be a hassle of epic proportions to do anything about it being that the items were from a foreign country. Thank you for your videos as I really do enjoy them.

Been seeing a lot of '57 Les Paul Black Beauties like this. Normally like a 5000-9000 guitar yet I've seen them going on Ebay for as little as 400 bucks. No headstock photos and the seller refuses to give me the serial number. I reported him to Ebay for attempting to sell fraudulent merchandise. It's fucked up that two years later I find more counterfeit or questionable Gibson guitars on Ebay than I can find legit ones.

You can report his listings to eBay and help shut him down. I've gotten a fake LP in the past, (bought a stripped 85 silverburst husk, turned out fake) and the fact it was fake was immediately clear. Thing felt like it was made from balsa, fit and finish was wrong in every way and all the usual mistakes of a chibson (actually had an ebony board or at least a convincing veneer) . Buyer claimed that if it was indeed a fake it never bothered him and it played just as good as an real gibson so everyone wins. I obviously won that case and got my $1500 back, shame I really wanted to dress it up and burn it on video but I had to return it.
