So... there's a picture of them or people who look like them on the wall. And the note passed under the door is Jeremy's handwriting... so i say there's a time machine beyond the door, as well as a future version of them who eventually opens the door and uses the time machine to travel back in time where that picture was taken. Only question left is why the aged, future version of themselves are now locked away in the room with the time machine. I suppose they locked themselves in there as an extra guard to keep their past selves from ever using the machine. They posted the lady as first guard, then all the locks, then they are the last ditch effort to stop themselves should they enter anyway. However, this clearly won't stop them, so they'd be trapped in the loop pretty much forever...
Not a time machine, it's that book from Evil Dead, and it would cause a time warp like it did at the end of the second movie (for some weird reason) but instead of sending them back to the middle ages it's only, like, 100 years or something. They locked themselves in to prevent the monsters possesing Jeremy from escaping, as well.

I actually agree with them saying she shouldn't have put all those locks on it. Just like 1, maybe 2 of the locks would have been fine as long as she hid the keys well enough.
this is what i say: since the handwriting is in jeremy's hand writing, they receive the note and never go in. But they live with that horrible feeling their entire life of always wondering what would have been behind that door if they went in (the aunt completely sealed it at this point). when they are old (hence the picture) and time travel is possible, they decide to finally see what would have been behind the door. They travel into the room where they find a monster who does nothing but force them to watch the Emoji Movie on loop for years on end and never lets them leave. They don't need food or water because they are in another dimension now. When they are on the verge of dying after a few years of cringyness overload, they hear the convo coming from outside the door and decide to slip them a note, then noticing that this is the same no0te they received and realized they would never be able to escape this loop.

I like when the camera lingers on a mundane shot for a while and zooms in slowly, and then the monster, who's been standing there the whole time, moves. Those give me chills for days!
Jeremy finds a haunted piano that says death threats behind the door but later forgets about it and finds it in a store and after he remembers about it he descends into madness and pretends to be a cat and gets adopted and finds new "parents" or owners completing his life once more
