Jail sucks everywhere. It’s county. There is only so much tax money to go around from the tax base. They don’t get outside money. Everything you expect as a civilian comes out of that money. Roads, libraries, public schools, fire department and police. Can you imagine how much money Cook County spends on programs to keep you OUT of jail? After school, sports, all sorts of shit they got to keep kids out of jail. The jail is the very last thing on the budget they care about. All of the stuff that the county needs to operate successfully comes first. Jail gets the scraps. It’s supposed to be that way. The squares and lames and civilians are the gears that keep a city running successfully. Criminals do nothing but clog up the works. So their needs come last. They won’t starve you to death. That’s all they have to do. Just feed you. And they are gonna do that the cheapest way possible. It’s supposed to be unpleasant so people think about going there before doing dumb shit. How many street dudes end up in jail for dumb shit like driving suspended with a firearm? Or driving without a license while dirty? The idea is that jail is so shitty that you stop doing dumb shit like that. Clearly that idea doesn’t work very well on a certain subset of people who just don’t give a shit about possible negative outcomes to their choices
