Hi, I'm Eris Esra, an eldritch princess vtuber who's obsessed with all things game development. I draw pixel art, design games, and write world lore. Oh, I also play games too!
⭐ I'm an indie dev currently in the process of making my first ever commercial game in the Godot Engine called: Necrotype Cafe! This devlog series will not only benchmark my progress, but also serve as a way for people to understand what game I've been working on during streams!

I like this form of storytelling. Video hits hard. Very calming vibe to it!

I didn’t have a game dev degree at my school, but my JavaScript final was a sudoku puzzle game

Sudoku? That sounds even harder than programming tik-tac-toe! Did you enjoy it? Or, instead, do you think you learned something valuable from it?

@@erisesra Well, I haven't programmed in Javascript since then, so, no lol. I actually wanted to make a TRPG using a JS game library but it was too much. I agree about not going to college for game dev.

Hopefully! I'd hate for you to feel like it was a waste of time! But if you find it valuable, that's all the better! I think my biggest gripe was not working in a game engine. That, and English is my least favorite subject. I wish you luck! ⭐

almost 3 years after graduating from Computer science pursuing game dev, not a single full fledge game developed other than my thesis. And even that wasn't released for the public. Good luck with your project.

Thank you! ⭐ I hope that degree has been somewhat helpful, even outside of game dev! But I agree 100%. I mostly learned about simple games or looking into data structures. Maybe you can remake that thesis game one day!

@@erisesra currently creating a new game as a hobby, finally have some time after several contracts worked on, it's really a weird coincidence I get to see this in my feed as a recommendation and well, best of luck to both you and to myself lmao! And with that thesis idea, maybe, but perhaps in a different form, I appreciate that idea actually!

Okay - here's my take on this. 100% self-taught game developer since 5 years on some unfamous engine I'm not gonna name to avoid being discredited. I agree with the point of "You're gonna learn more in 4 years of doing than 4 years in college", that is 100% true but that's because that's not what college is about. College is a place that gives you a base set of knowledge - not only practical - so that companies know that you've recieved "standardised" education (or at least a base) that ensures that whatever job you're thrown in, you're not gonna drown (or at least you'll barely stay afloat). I personally skipped it for personal reasons though. If you plan on making indie games all your life, it's true that college might not be the best option - but indie games aren't a reliable source of income except if you somehow manage to be the next indie success, and it's ever so rare to achieve that. If you plan on making a career out of game developement, it's probably better to get a degree. It's not _required_ and I know that because I make a living out of games, but it's probably better both because theorical knowledge is useful but also because it's gonna open you more doors. Either way - good luck on your journey, and nice job on Necrotype Cafe, I tested it and there's definitively potential. Cheers!

Thank you for the feedback, and I whole-heartily agree! ⭐Like you said, college serves as a place to make sure everyone's on the same page on what rules to follow and best practices to maintain! I think my main problem was that, even in college, I ended up drowning, so I guess in a way it showed I wasn't prepared XD. Making Indie games 100% doesn't guaranteeing you success and it might even take 20 years for you to make a profit! I whole heartily understand not betting on a miracle! And in that sense, I think getting a degree not in game development, but something more like general computer science, is a far more worthy investment! This way you can make a living while making games on the side. It's lovely to hear from someone who's worked in the industry, and it's been super insightful! I think if not indie, maybe there's small indie companies out there who work less off of degrees, and look more towards the projects you've worked on! So maybe there's a best of both worlds! Thank you for the luck! And I'm glad you enjoyed what I have to offer so far! ⭐

I'm in my last year of high school, currently writing a game engine. I love programming, in general. But I cannot recall a single time school has ever helped me in any way with that, even though I'm on a profile with extended CS classes. Recently, I've started wondering whether it's even worth getting some software development job; I'm worried that (as a job) I will completely lose all interest I've had in programming. And for me, having a job that I like is more important than earning a lot of money
@erisesra
@erisesra 23 часа назад
That's a tough one! I think it'd be a worthy investment if your job requires you to have a degree! But, I completely get the part about something you love turning bitter! I had to program data structures, allocate memory, sort data, and a bunch of other programmings things that weren't related to making games. By the end of it, I took a break from programming to recover XD I'm wishing you luck, and that you find the path that works best for you! ⭐ While College certainly isn't for everyone, if it takes you where you need to go(job application wise) I think it's worth it! I never intend to apply to a game-dev company, so my aspiration to get a degree didn't match the goal.

7:13 Is it not possible to just write over your old text? That would completely solve the flickering issue, since you aren't clearing the entire console every frame.
@pseudo.Random-KF
@pseudo.Random-KF День назад
If not, then maybe just have the screen be updated only when it needs to be (For example, pressing the buttons to change the screen, or the icons in the machines changing)
@erisesra
@erisesra 23 часа назад
Possibly? It's been a second since I've looked at the code and I've learned a lot since then! However, I remember not being provided a solution when I asked my Professor about it! The game is constantly updating timers and checking for things. Though I can say for certain it wasn't built for optimization! XD So it wouldn't surprise me if there was a way! The trouble occurs when 2 things happen at once, such as timers finishing. So every game second, it's looping through a list of checks to see what it has to update! I think it would still produce a semi-flickering effect though, even if it only updated when needed! Such as, the customer's time ticking down! Far less, yes, but it might not be worth the investment of time since it'd still flicker!
@pseudo.Random-KF
@pseudo.Random-KF 21 час назад
@@erisesra imo, if the display does not have any new information to display, it does not need to be updated. it could be painful to seperate the code from the main loop, but it'll certainly look better

what kind of university did you go to, no wonder you dropped out, I'm in uni for games programming and I'm the goat so far

An art focused university like Full Sail! Aside from not learning with a game engine, my other issue was attending classes outside of what I wanted to learn like, English, and Data algorithms! The perquisites! I'm happy to hear you're enjoying your courses though! While college certainly isn't for me, I'm glad it's benefited others! I'm wishing you luck!⭐
