Andrew, you are the only video on EGO Line IQ that shows the animation of the Line starting at 16 inches and going down to 5 inches before the LineIQ gets triggered ! Thank you so much for including that animation into your demonstration. Good work!

I considered that Powerload feature when I was shopping for a string trimmer, but opted for the EGO without it. It occurred to me that loading the head is something I might do once every 2 or 3 _seasons,_ and EGO has made that easy enough on the conventional models. Saving 30 seconds every couple years didn't seem worth the risk of one more thing that could go wrong, nor the cost of increased weight, no matter how small. It might be useful for those with limited hand/wrist/arm mobility, though. *But Line IQ is a different story!* I'd love to give that a try. I've found my unit's bump feed to be unreliable; it sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't. And feeding too much only to see it trimmed off and wasted is annoying.

The line feed is extremely useful when brush cutting as i run through the line in the head every 3 to 4 4.0 ah battery charges

There is one thing that all reviewers miss, with bump trimmers the line is about 1 1/2” inches above the bottom of the trimmer head so you have to raise the back of the trimmer to keep the line aimed at the ground. With the Ego trimmer the line is very close to the bottom of the trimmer head which makes the job much easier.

Stihl has had the Super Cut automatic feed head for around a decade. Their spool has to be manually rewound and it also only holds about 10 feet of line.

Feel compelled to comment as I know you heavily push this trimmer but for me it was by far the worst string trimmer I've ever used. The Line IQ never worked properly. First one wouldn't let out string then let out like 4 inches at a time. On the first day of ownership it had severely damaged the guard due to way too much string being released. Was replaced under warranty. Second one kind of sort of worked- not very well. It very inconsistently fed out line and on more than one occasion decided to do it half way through me edging around something delicate, damaging it in the process. My edges looked horrible. Then the battery died (5 months of ownership) - replaced under warranty. Struggled with it for 3 months before I gave up and brought a leather trimmer (which is 1000x better). I'll never use an auto extend head again. Ego saw my review and asked me to bring it back. They agreed it was faulty and replaced under warranty (a third time in 9 months). Got it back a couple days ago.. and now the battery has failed again. Whilst in the shop someone returning the same trimmer. 3 months old. Power load had failed and wouldn't work. No way to load line manually so trimmer was useless. I have battery tools from milwuakee, stihl, dewalt, ryobi and must have maybe 20 odd batteries between them. I've only ever had one other battery die - a ryobi one... after 6 years. Love my ego blower and mower but the line trimmer with line iq was terrible. Like you said the telescopic pole and handle are fantastic.... looks nice too... shame it can't cut grass to save its life. Just thought I'd put this here in case others have the same experience.
@LarryCook1960
@LarryCook1960 3 месяца назад
The Line IQ on mine is very annoying. It doesn't auto feed until there's only ~3" of line sticking out, and then when it does feed out some line it leaves 2" chunks of line in the yard. EGO says a bump feed head won't fit on the trimmer, so I can't just replace the IQ head with an older head.
@gstrek1

Wish they had the bump feed option as a backup for this $300 string trimmer. I can definitely see Line IQ failing after a little while with no option but to throw it away and spend more money on a replacement.

@@Kitearmy That's fair, but does the Line IQ head have _less_ parts? I don't know but my guess is it has at least as many, including the electronics. If it has a small PC board, that's actually dozens or hundreds of parts, the failure of any one of which could bring down the feature. But I'm not criticizing; just thinking of both pros & cons. I love the idea. 🙂Plus it would give me one more excuse to buy that perty carbon fiber shaft I passed up for my current unit. 😀

I have this IQ model (ST1623T), had it for a couple of months now and as much as I want too, I'm NOT loving it, at least not now. Though, the auto-load feature is very nice, use it once so far and now looking for some .095 line replacements before it's done. My local Lowes carries the EGO brand precut (14 ft.), 5-refills (70 ft. in total) for $16.98, wondering about replacement lines that might be a better deal with equal or better-quality cuts. I have been using an old 36v/40v battery black & decker with the flip head for edging, uses the smaller string line, .065 and it does the job. I decide to upgrade to this string trimmer, and man its much heavier and the longer than my old black and decker. Currently, my problem is I have much less control with this EGO trimmer, talk about screwing up my edging and general trimming along the fence line & such. LOL I guess I'll keep at it and hopefully, by the end of spring I'll learn to control this beast. LOL

The most important thing is to stick with .095" line diameter. Any different line diameter/density will cause the autofeed head to feed too much or too little line due to the differing centrifugal force. Too light of a line will likely result in the head constantly feeding and cutting it off until the line's gone!

Do you know exactly how the Line IQ feeds more line. Does it feed a little line continuously? Does it seems to feed when the line get smaller and the RPM increase due to the smaller length line? Does it require you to run the Trimmer at high speed to know the line is smaller? Have you figured out how it exactly feeds more line and when? I am concerned that it continuously feeds line using it up faster than a bump head. Thanks again for the reviews and great videos.
@Kitearmy
@Kitearmy 2 года назад
It does not continually add string - based on need
@DoresoomReviews
@DoresoomReviews 2 года назад
It will feed line to the correct length at both high and low speeds. I believe it works via a self-locking mechanism tuned for the centrifugal force exerted by the correct line length. I did find it goes through line faster than a traditional bump feed though.

While it's true they're not inexpensive, I don't mind paying more for something I really want that's well designed and built. As for the run time: I have their leaf blower, hedge trimmer, string trimmer, and chainsaw. I can't speak to everyone's needs, but I have about 0.8 acres, a fair number of trees, lots of bushes... and string trimming takes nearly an hour each time. The only tool that has run out of juice before the job was done was the string trimmer, and only once or twice in the 15 or 20 times I've used it. Plus recharging is quick and easy. I'm actually considering the snow blower next. All of that is to say you might be surprised at how good batteries have gotten (at least for this brand; the only one I have experience with).
