Just brilliant. I happened to find your channel doing a casual search for da Vinci lighting. I’ve never seen so thorough a treatment as regards photography. So yeah, I liked and subscribed. I’m catching up on your past vids and so far they’re all wonderful. My fave right now is your most intelligent debunking of the so-called exposure triangle. Looking forward to many more!

Its amazing how much photography knowledge pre-dates photography. Glad you are enjoying the channel! Let me know what sort of videos you'd like to see in the future.

Your comment about the painting of Jesus holding the globe and the effect of the lighting made me think of the verse from James, "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." Really enjoying your channel, new subscriber after watching a few videos.

That is the perfect verse for the interpretation! "No variation or shifting shadow" completely sums up Leonardos' approach.

Glad you enjoyed it. There’s not a lot in photography people didn’t already know hundreds of years ago.

I found this fascinating. For some reason it made much more sense than many of the videos using studio lights that I've watched. And I like your presenting style. I'm looking forward to more of your videos.

I really appreciate it! I have a video on Rembrandt on the channel - and more to come looking at different artists and their lighting styles.

Great article! About the height of the light. You say 11 feets are too much for the usual spaces, but D'avinci says in other paragraph that the best place to paint an portraiture is a yard with 10 "braccios" in length, 10 in wide and 20 in height. A bracio is 56 cm with is roughly 1.5 feets. About the "rembradt light", I have beenusing that name for years but nowadays I understand this is the name in what we can call "USA school of portraiture" and it is not a charasteristic of Rembrandt the painter but a misunderstanding of what a 2/3 light is: the actual charasteristic of Rembrandt is no the "triangle" but the "shining" of the main subject, and that "triangle under the eye" is many others painters.

Thank you! I missed the paragraph giving braccia rather than ratios. I’ll go through again to find it. I appreciate your insight!

@@FilNenna Maybe it is not in the edition you show in the video (the "notebook") but in the other edition, more extense, the "A tratade on paint" (I supose that's the name in english). It is in the last chapter, when he talks about the practical ideas for the painter.

even though the subject is familiar to me, that was fascinating video. thanks.

Yeah, thanks, this was great, actually. Really technical but not really anything to do with brands and gear and stuff to buy. I like how this could be applied to a nighttime shop window lighting a street portrait, or shaft of light in an alley. Also, nice calm, clearly delivered presentation, no hyperbolic enthusiasm. Good style.

I've really enjoyed this video. So I went out to the local bookshop to buy this book. But the are dozens to choose from. Could you perhaps give me more details on this book? I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much.

I used the two volumes of "The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci" compiled by Jean Paul Richter. They have the original Italian and an English translation side-by-side. You might be able to find them used like I did.

@@FilNenna Thank you so much for your quick reply. I'll try to order it. I'm still searching for my "style", or better, what I like most. So with the philosophy behind light, and shadow, I might get a step forward. Have a great week. And thank you again.
