I am retired automotive technology teacher, always told my students to cross reference dedicated vs global data, and at the same time have a lab scope looking at the live signal as an extra step. Great video.

Watched the vid as soon as it popped up. When in doubt go generic!! I always learn a lot from DD!! When they bring them low on gas, they pay 30 bucks for 10 bucks worth of gas. I think the beer idea is better

Hey Dan! Great catch with OEM vs Generic scan data 😊 One of my customers has a 2006 Hyundai Tucson V6. It had a "lean" condition and the diagnosis showed the mass air sensor wasn't reporting enough air! I unplugged it and car runs beautifully... He's been driving it like that for over a year now, no problem at all 😆👌

Always amazed how car proud your customers are. Except for one or two times, and usually when the car had been sitting at another shop, they always look freshly washed with clean and uncluttered interiors.

i got to say u are one of the best, i see so many so called experts on u tube and to see the likes they get amaze me. i see some and think to myself why did they put such a video out their. i guess people have not learned how to find guys like you, super mario and other top guys. if they watched u and the top ten they would not watch those others, but who knows. i get the most skills from you guys and thanks a gazillion for what you give us . been at this 26 yrs never stop learning. may be do a proper ac job when you get a chance using a micron gauge to show how it should be done. tom lech and hvac school channel has taught me so much. i was in the dark on ac for to long and they greatly expanded my knowledge. keep um comming

Not only a great example of possibly being fooled, you proved the real issue and verified the input to the module was corrected with new part as well.

Hi Dan you seem to have the same values as we do in Australian. You can get more work done with a slab ( 24 cans of beer) than it costs to by 4…slabs. I have one for you my daughter has a Mazda cz7. Check engine light and airbag light both on. I filled the oil .. Both lights go out 😮

good job, this is why several different scan tools are needed to verify some faults. and keep your sanity!

Fixed it again!! This was great information because I find myself usually using the OE data. I would have gone down a rabbit hole. Lots of beer!!!😂

I had this exact situation happen to me aswell. the same brand and model car. This shows you to always to double check your own measuring tools, even though you think you're sure about the measurements. great work and greetings from Zoetermeer!

I worked on my neighbours car last week, and he also had a bad MAF Sensor too. After a few days, the EML came back on, and as it turns out, he also had a vacuum leak downstream.

Er is in de ecm ook een mogelijkheid om de adaptieve waarden te wissen. Als je dit gedaan had dan zou de waarde van de MAF sensor op 0 blijven staan bij een defecte sensor.

The generic mode of the scan tool made you to be sure of what is actually going on. The scope test is actually relevant because you are no longer relying on what the ecm is showing you but what the sensor is giving to you.

Yaaa. Need to get that beers. Had myself those "nonstarters" because of "fool's panic". Keep it up!

I think this is great info. Why is the OE data giving you misleading data over the generic data though?

As we know, not all inputs can be substituted with calculated data. For those that the PCM can interpolate, seems like there should be a sister-PID available, for those inputs, that show the technician the mode (calculated or trusted).

Great job DD, I was working on a Nissan Primera with MAF fault codes that was running rough with black ⚫️ smoke from the tail pipe, watched live data on my Xtool D8BT and it was giving me the same positive readings on my scan tool. After watching this video I will always disconnect the MAF and recheck for false readings. Please let me know how to switch onto generic mode on my scan tool for more accurate reading in the future. Thanks

In "generic" it's showing you EOBD emission data values, which by law has to be raw data values, not manipulated by ecu as oem values can be. I have experienced that a lot when car goes into limp mode.

When I saw that fuel gauge on E I thought it had to be my wife's Hyundai. She drives me crazy letting her cars get down to running on fumes before refilling. I told her she's going to owe our mechanic a lot of beer someday.

Generic is very useful. Today on a 1998 BMW I could not see fuel trims with our autel. Lots of PIDS i could see but nothing helpful for a simple mixture diag. Well, switched to generic and bam I got o2 voltages and trims.

SERVICE MAN: So sir, we have replaced your MAF sensor CUSTOMER: Is the car fixed now ? SERVICE MAN: Unfortunatelly, MIL is still present CUSTOMER: So what would be next step ? Was the MAF sensor faulty if the car is not fixed ? SERVICE MAN: I´m not happy to say it, but ilt looks like your ECU is faulty. And yes, MAF sensor was faulty, it had to be replaced anyway. New ECU is very expensive, i dont think you want to have it replaced, so you can pick up your car, its 200 for MAF and 100 for labor. Another great example of the saying 1 dollar for screw, 100 for knowing which to replace :D Thank you Dan for keeping up great work and educating all mechanics around the globe ! 😊

Is it probably using the MAP sensor data as a fallback when the MAF is considered faulty and that's what you've seen or is it always reporting the MAP readings instead of the MAF?

How important is the scope? Any cheap way to go without it?

Great indepth video Dan , so many people don't understand the benefits from using a scope to see real live data , it would be great if customers would accept that it needs doing to definitely give correct diagnosis , even when their friend from the pub who used to fix cars in the 70's told them something else is wrong and they accept his larger 🍺, diagnosis because he is a nice guy , I say well if you want his diagnosis doing it will be X £ , but if you want it right it will be Y£ , don't you love it when they drop the car off and the fuel computer says 6 miles fuel left , then you change the fuel filter , and it won't start 🥊🤬

I was under the impression that voltage was unprocessed data and things like grams per second and temperature so forth was the processed data. Interesting that generic mode showed nothing in processed data. Thanks Dan.

as usual Dan lots of good information. Here in America on the generic OBD2 side of any scanner manufactures are not allowed to use substituted data. Is it similar over in Europe?

I’d just replace the sensor and go from there 😂 and be done with it just because I don’t have the knowledge or tools like you have! Hopefully one day!
