Hi, I am more of a camera man than a graphic artist, with regards to Mapping, how much graphic knowledge would be necessary to be a productive 'drone mapping pilot'? It seems like, having a skill besides drone piloting would be needed to grasp the whole process. I understand that may be the whole reason for the class, but does understanding the class itself require some previous knowledge or skill? Thank you.

No previous experience with aerial mapping is required and while graphic knowledge would be helpful, it's definitely not required. Aerial mapping is more about understanding how to accurately capture images and then process them using software specifically designed to stitch images together. There is definitely a learning curve associated with the mapping software that is used, determining the best camera settings for the model of drone used (manual or auto), and learning the types of flight plans that will capture the best images for a 2D or 3D orthomosaic. The Mapping Essentials course gets into the various aspects of mapping such as how to correctly capture images, understanding Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) and how this impacts the accuracy of the final product, and utilizing Ground Control Points (GCP) to accurately georeference images to a know location on the earth's surface. Without completing the mapping course individuals will learn the process of aerial mapping by trial and error which can be overwhelming and frustrating.
