im starting to want to avoid newer Briggs products at all costs. first these throw away engines requiring no oil change and now plastic carbs. what a cheap shoddy company. they may as well just have their products completely made in china. im getting so sick of the garbage being produced these days.

Hey Steve, love your videos bro and I appreciate you taking the time making and editing them for us. I don’t know if you’ve done a video on those aggravating craftsmen / tecumseh carburetors where they will run only if you’re priming the prime bulb and they die as soon as you stop priming. There’s that secret little hole tucked inside in between the threads that can’t be seen but it’s there. I used clean that little hole with a staple by flatlining one end and poking that clogged hole located between the threads. I can’t tell you how many free craftsman mowers I’ve found in alleyways that had that issue. It’s a ten or 20 minute fix depending on how many beers I feel like drinking during the cleaning, and when I’m done I’ll sell it as a $50 dollar mower all day long. Didn’t know if you have done a video on that specific craftsman / tecumseh engine or not so I apologize if you did and I just overlooked it. But if you didn’t, man that would be a great video to do and you would be saving the pride of many married men lol. Always great stuff on your channel Steve and if you decide to make the video, shoot me a shoutout at Big Jim!

Hey Steve, Just wanted to say thank-you for posting vids on these carburetors. I went through all three and they really helped! I like to play with the antique stationary gas engines pre-1930s as a hobby. These modern ones have quirks that the old ones don't, so its really nice to have a preview guide before working on one of these modern engines. They're a real time saver and really help to prevent making silly mistakes. Got my surging mower fixed in less than an hour! Thanks for all your good work!

Hi Steve. Perfect. I actually figured this out myself. At one point I was cleaning out the carb did not realize this piece actually fell out. I had no idea where it came from or where it went back to. I looked at an old carb that I saved for parts and saw it. I got lucky. So this video was perfect. It will save someone a lot of trouble. Again, Thanks

Despite these carburetors being made of plastic, Briggs and Stratton has made it to where they are very easy to replace. Part of their new engine design was to be easy to repair and work on. These plastic carburetors aren’t that bad. The main problem is that they clog easily, so if gas is left in for a year, that’s a new plastic carburetor that is gonna be a simple “slide on” job.

You have to enlarge the idle jet with a torch tip cleaning wire file. Use non ethanol gasoline and you can leave the gas in it. I've never ran an engine dry over the winter.

I actually was given a Bolens push mower last year with this type of carburetor. I must have spent numerous hours taking apart and cleaning the carb, only to have it start and then immediately stop each time. I racked my head so much on this, and finally grabbed another carb I had on the shelf to really investigate what was going on. Turns out that the sleeve was completely missing- I guess that's why it was free! Well, it definitely was a learning experience for me; after I used the sleeve from the spare one and put it in the other carb, it worked fine.

Aloha Steve.. Mark Nye thefixitguy here in Kaneohe Oahu needing some help.!! I just learned that the Troy Bilt front drive mower my soninlaw bought 3 years ago has the B&S 140cc engine with the plastic carb with the primer bulb in the middle of the air filter housing. It starts first pull almost everytime I mow. I am working on a Toro 150cc personal space with the plastic carb but it has auto choke lever from the muffler. 4 or 5 hard pulls and it will sputter try and start and looks like it kicks exhaust out from around the cylinder but then runs good. Stop it and it's a nightmare to start again. I cleaned the plastic main jet and everything looks real clean. Choke is fully closed when cold. The weird part is even if spray some carb cleaner into the carb it still sputters for a bit then starts. What am I missing ?? Should I try a new carb or is this exhaust blow by telling me the head gasket needs replaced and it's a compression problem ?? I'm scratching my head.😂🤔🤔 Thank for all your videos..always great ones. One more thing. Have you tried , Stone Buenaveza Beer..?🍺🍺

Another issue I have seen with the carburettors fitted on earlier production engines where the primer bulb isn't located between the fuel tank and the carburetor is that the inlet on the carburetor for the primer between tank specification is sometimes not sealed up and can cause non starting or rough running. The fix is to just seal it up either by melting the plastic with a soldering iron to seal up the hole on the inlet or find a small rubber cap that fits over the inlet.

Have dropped the bowl and cleaned the cartridge on the one that has given me issues... took some repeats, but finally decided to play nice.... never actually pulled the float/jet.... bit of water and some crud.... other one has never has an issue (blame the gas a friend put in the first when new), but pulling the 2 parts of the cartridge part is a key detail.

Pulling the cartridge out with a pair of pliers causes issues also. I pulled my first one with pliers and crushed the end. The pressed in bearing at the bottom will come loose and cause a run rich condition. This also runs like the choke is closed. Always use the flat screwdriver pry method. These carbs are super easy to clean and almost never need any parts. you don't need teeny tiny wire to clean a slow speed circuit like the "Chonda" carb pressed in o-ring leaker.

Just randomly happened to watched this, or perhaps it was divine intervention. Just reinstalling the carb on my Honda mower after cleaning it. It wasnt clogged or even very dirty but its been giving me issues starting, even with starting fluid. Some of the videos i watched nentioned that the butterfly is closed when the engine is cold. Tinkering with mine, about to put it back on, the butterfly doesn't close all the way & I can't get it to. Oh well, what do i know, right? When I saw Steve pull the butterfly in this video, I wondered if mine could comeut like that & mayve i could see why it was t closing. TAH DAH!! I put it back in with the spindle aligned between the the 2 columns of little bumps & it now closes all the way. YAY! It had gotten pushed in too far, probably from me jamming the spray nozzles on cans of carb cleaner, brake kleen, & starting fluid up against it. Maybe the problem to begin with. Laying it on that side while cleaning it probably pushed it in even farther. Properly aligned, one side sticks out of the hole when in open position. I woukd never have thought of that & never would have known. Probably would have taken it to the shop Who knew? I'm being careful not to do that now while hooking up the governor springs, fuel line, etc. THANK YOU, STEVE!

I recently was given a 2012 Husqvarna HU775 that had been stored in a climate controlled storage unit for 12 years that was used twice when purchased. It has the lever for starting, fast, slow, and stop positions on the left rail. I cleaned out the gas tank, carb bowl, carb jets, and put in new oil. It fired right up and runs, but not at full rpm though. I found a cracked breather tube and replaced that, but I have the same issue. I'm not sure if it's the throttle control cable, governor, springs, but it's got to be a simple adjustment. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Steve, having viewed your video on the Mountfield plastic carburettor, I have just repaired a Mountfield SP185 fitted with a similar carb that refused to start. It would start with a squirt of Bradex Easy Start in the air filter but then immediately stalled. Following your video, I dismantled the carb and removed the plastic cartridge comprising the three jets. Having given them a good blow through and proved them clear with carb cleaner the machine started and ran. However it ‘hunts’ or ‘surges all the time. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be causing this as the carb itself is spotlessly clean. Also can you tell me what the two white plastic plugs are for in the carb. One is a flat topped plug and the other seems to have a spigot on it which looks like it might fit into a pipe of some sort although it does not have a hole in it? Thanks so much. Keep up the great work. Love the videos.

I saw, and read up more on, someone saying to not use carb cleaner on plastic parts and orings, and that might have been my issue, especially since I saw one of my orings get messed up. so that could be an issue for you too?

OK I have a question for you I’ve noticed lately that there are a lot of carburetors mostly Briggs & Stratton with the foam around the choke shaft or the throttle shaft are these really important

I am really struggling with this issue. In May early May i cut my grass and noticed it was running rough. After the cut I removed the carb, cleaned it and put everything back together. Now it won't start at all. Checked for spark and I'm getting spark. Only thing i noticed is that the float seems to not have the full freedom to drop down once i put the bowl back on. Another issue is that when i use starting fluid it STILL WILL NOT RUN. Help!

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon I went to pick up a barn find porsche 914 and everything that could go wrong did go wrong.I borrowed a friend's van and the wheel bearings and steering box were so bad that I felt like I was getting blown off the road every time a truck went whizzing by. Finally got to a part of the turnpike where they were working on the far lane and pulled over and borrowed tools to take everything apart and figure that the thermostat was stuck closed.Pulled that damn thing out on the side of the Blue Mountain interchange and drove to the next exit to turn around and come home without the prize.
