It's amazing how many RULES there are with composting! But "no rules compost," as Bruce from Red Gardens puts it, works! Nature knows how to compost. When we received a truckload of expired bread, we gave away and used what we could, and then we composted the rest.
But, David The Good, can you compost bread? Isn't that on the list of things you shouldn't compost? Sure, but why? Will bread compost attract vermin? Or will the compost smell bad? We aren't worried about that. When life gives you too much organic material, compost it! Here's how we're hot composting bread in a great big compost pile. You can do it too!

I am 71 and this is my first garden experience I am having a great time and some extraordinary things have happened, I had a snake slither between my knees as I knelt weeding, I poked a mole when checking the soil moisture and I dug up a white gold pendant necklace with a star sapphire and 4 lil diamonds just shining in my compost pile as I turned it, If Im lying Im dying! As far as the garden goes doodle bugs are attacking squash and tomatoes hate me, /grin I have managed to sprout some sugar snap peas, white potatoes and red potatoes and sweet potatoes but it is all a joy and I am not giving up yet impetuous as I prove myself to be /sigh always enjoy your company and your content, you make me smile love and blessings

I remember being deeply anxious the first time I fed my baby compost pile what seemed, to my inexperienced eye, like "too much" unused pancake mix and dry flour and so on. I was convinced that the leavening ingredients would kill everything. Since then I've composted entire chicken carcasses, cooked and raw animal bones up to size deer shoulder, fabric scraps, box upon box upon box of old paperwork, tubs of cooking grease, and everything else that I judged to contain neither plastic nor metal. The only thing I have ever found that doesn't compost is a cereal box with a glossy/waxy coating. And the more "forbidden" compost items I added, the more vigorous the pile became. Turned landfill fodder into a fragrantly steaming mountain of sweet, earthy compost, every time.

BTW, if you ever find yourself with another surplus of bread, you could also try dehyrating some into bread crumbs and/or cubes (cubes are perfect for homemade stuffing or croutons). I wonder if koji mold could help you break down that bread so that it's easier to use in your garden. It's a mold that's mostly used in Japanese food to break down starches into simple sugars and proteins into amino acids. It's what they use to convert rice starches into fermentable sugars for sake. Could be real useful for breaking down all the carbs in that bread and allowing the soil to absorb it faster.

Very great without you and perma pastures farm I may wouldn‘t consider to compost nearly everything. A friend told me he isn’t even composting ecological banana peels. I told him to put it between a plant pot and earth after 2-3weeks insects will eat it up. So there are even different ways if you don‘t have enough materials to make a big pile. Or then make a small pile I guess.

I think it would be really cool to see some lab analysis of some forbidden composts, and from your garden soil. I know of some people who would probably say all sorts of things about your methods. I would like to see what microbes are present, especially once the compost has been incorporated into the soil, where it actually makes a difference. I have a feeling that a well established garden soil will overpower the anaerobes pretty quickly once it's mixed into the soil.

Fortunately i get these bread baseball bats that become hard as a rock in about 2 to 3 days. I mix those loaves in with the bagged breads, removed from bag of course, into a barrel for storage. The dried breads suck the moisture out of the other bread creating bread moisture harmony. This is yeast science 101. Been wondering about composting it as well.

I tried to compost a loaf of Great Harvest bread in my yard waste can and it didn't break down. It was still intact 6 weeks later despite being buried by food scraps and yard detrius. It may have been because of the salt content. The reason I chucked it was because it tasted salty, which means it must have had a ton considering bread normally has a decent amount of salt to begin with.

As you layer the composed pile you can layer crushed up Charcoal which will keep down the smell and make Much better compost. You can actually Use Royal Oaks charcoal.

Absolutely either compost inedible food or feed to birds etc. I composted retired cotton "knickers" to see how well that would go. It went fine.

This channel is not only one of my favourite source of knowledge but also the best source of music! What's the name of the song during the trippy part? If it's yours when are you going to release it?

My grandma would clean the bread wrappers and cut them into one long big strip and crochet it into a round rug. You could wash the rug in the machine in the winter time it was warm on your feet in the summer is cool on your toes. That would make an awfully pretty rug I'd pay to see that. That's one big sloppy joe you just made there David! Thank you for being so "consiDOUGHrate" and showing us how to make a new kind of compost sandwich. NANA'S from Central Florida

With three mini bamboo pegs you could sleeve the bread bag over them like wind barrier or tiny greenhouse to start plants earlier in the season.
