I use a drag anchor on my kayak. It doesn't bring me to a complete stop but slows my drift down. It's 8-10 1.5' or chain connected to one point.

Good luck, have you watched Eric Estrada's videos? He is doing a jon boat build on his channel.

I actually take a spray bottle of fresh water to spray the guides and reel off before the drive home. Some areas are a hour or more from the house and you would be surprised what the heat and saltwater can do in a short period of time.

Thanks Alvin! Had my first Dedeaux popper strike of the year this evening..nice fish but missed her.🙁 I’ve had some top water action on the Pedernales the last few weeks with some foam sliders..but orange crawdad imitations on the bottom have been my big producers with some nice bass involved. Have a great one bud! 👍🎣👌

Rio Coastal Quickshooter is an intermediate line built for colder salt conditions like we encounter here in the MidAtlantic and Northeast.

Outbound short also has a coldwater and a tropical version. I found it not to matter much for the Outbound short, but the Coastal Quickshooter was extremely limp in warm conditions. I spoke to a guide out of Montauk and he uses Rio Flats Pro tropical year round (well April-Dec) without any issues.

@Alvin Dedeaux They list 75 degree water and air temp as the cutoff where above it you use tropical line, below it use coldwater. But in the northeast you have plenty of days where air temp is well above it while water temp is well below that in spring, and vice versa in the fall. It might also be marketing to make you but both. They actually recently changed the outbound short to "all-water" whereas they used to have a separate freshwater and saltwater line. I'm not sure there was ever a difference, and maybe after the price got well above $100/line for the new Rio slick-cast they called it all-water since people may look elsewhere before buying separate fresh and salt lines at that price point.

@@thomasgallo7271 it’s definitely not 75 in April or Nov when we’re fishing striper runs off NJ. “Gimmick” or not, my friends and I have found that line to be a blessing in place of the tropical lines we used to fish that got stiff.

Alvin, love your videos! Grateful for all you’ve taught me about chasing Reds and Bass. Question: What are your thoughts on bass tournaments? More specifically, have you ever thought about trying to host a tournament specifically devoted to Guads? I know there is one bass fly fishing tournament on Lake Fork every May - curious if you would support other tournaments like that here in Central Texas?

Indeed, the rod should do the work, not your wrist/arms

I agree it is necessary for longer casts. But, on short casts it just isn't needed for some types of fishing. Bass don't care for a pretty loop foe example or a fly smacking down. On a short 20 or 30 ft cast it can be pretty stiff in most cases.

One time about thirty years ago a guide who was a friend and 'neighborhood neighbor' of my great-uncle encouraged me to come over to his house the next morning to tell Joan about a leader butt I was using that had impressed him, but I figured that, not only did she probably know of it, whether she'd tried it or not, but that, regardless, I had no interest in babbling to the poor thing when they could be leaving to go bonefishing instead... so, I've never tried mansplaining to Joan, I am quite un-embarrassed to say... but, I do think, now that I'm twice that old, I have something worth adding to enhance (or vivify) her wrist-use advice. Which is, 10 o'clock to 12 o'clock with the WRIST... with the index finger (WERE it sticking out) being the hour hand, relative to the FOREARM. (In fact, if one wants to cast with one's index finger instead of one's thumb, the index finger CAN be sticking out... and there happens to be a touring southwest Florida guide who demonstrates advantages of casting that way.) But, anyhow, whether the index finger is actually sticking out, with the wrist twisted to get the index finger on top of the grip, or whether one is picturing how the index finger would be angled/unangled relative to the forearm IF the index finger were sticking out, (with the thumb on top of the grip and the wrist therefore untwisted relative to the forearm), the easy-to-remember trick is to let the line pickup stroke pull that index-to-forearm angle to 10 o'clock from the very beginning, but then you (righthanders) finally "roll" the index angle to a hard stop at 12 o'clock relative to the forearm, and NEVER LET IT GO BEYOND 12 o'clock, relative to the forearm... even though (as Joan teaches) the forearm itself can be allowed to drift. And, conversely, the forward cast can be started with the "index or would-be index" at 12 o'clock relative to the forearm... with the wrist rolling that to 10 o'clock (as far as it'll go, resulting in a hard stop) RELATIVE TO THE FOREARM, to finish the cast. To get a better picture of this, stick one's forefinger out, and fan it to either side, using the wrist, and one will see that it stops smartly at roughly 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, respectively (relative to the forearm). And, on the back cast, one always wants to sharply halt one's finishing wrist roll with the wrist perpendicular to the forearm... such that the forefinger would not get past lining up with the forearm, were the forefinger sticking out (or even if it is!).
