Enjoyed the video very much. I have been lifting subwoofers off the floor for over 10 years now. It works extremely well with instant results. I currently have 4 active 12" subwoofers. 2 subwoofer stands are 12" high the other 2 stands are 60" high. The bass is smooth as butter, once you've tried this trick you will never go back. Also it's best to try and have all subs the same brand, model and size [if possible]. Another trick that has worked for me is to have 2 subs crossed over at different Hz that way you get a much smoother response over a greater range, the bass comes in and continues to build, it's almost a life changing experience.

Managing low frequency energy distribution within a room is a large challenge. We have tried all of the multiple speaker approaches but find them lacking in definition and separation. The money spent on multiple LF drivers can be better utilized with treatment for all frequency ranges,

Great work Dennis, I have one sub that's on the floor, out of four, only because when I was setting up, doing the subwoofer crawl and when I do the crawl, I do it on my hands and knees, then up on my knees and finally standing up, to help find all the hight point's as well, so the one on the ground was a good response point, my house is cinder block on a cement slab, with one sub that I had set on floor, running ypao, I found that ypao was upping the dB to it, so I raised that sub a bit over a foot off the floor, run ypao again, I gained just over 3db, I then lowering gain to suit, it spoke for it's self, after a lot of research, your input being the best I found, some time perfecting my set up, all I'm doing now is enjoying every second of it, thanks Dennis.

I do not like to use the word common sense but I think it is appropriate here. Why would you place a low frequency energy producing device next to a room boundary surface ?. Why would you fire energy into a physical structure that is a few inches away from the source? Does the interplay with the room surface produce more distortions that are audible?

Interesting video. A friend has a metal fab shop, he has 4 Yamaha S115V PA speakers and a single EV 18" sub. The speakers are up high on a storage shelf above the living area (he lives in his shop) and the sub was on the floor up against a wall. The bass sounded muddy and bad. We got the requisite length of speakon cable and forklifted the sub up to the elevated position of the main speakers. Sound was improved greatly, then I took a few measurements and tuned it using REW and his EQ. It sounds great now, tonally balanced for what it is, and his QSC pro audio amp and that big EV sub have plenty of power, the system will rock your socks off. What was shocking was how detailed and good it sounds at low volume levels. I think all the lathes, welding and equipment in the shop acts as "room treatment" as the sound is remarkably even wherever one stands with no boomy bassy hot spots. It really is one of the better sounding PA systems I've heard 😄

Hi Dennis, I have a small venue at the beach 23 front x 90 each side , ( the front is totally open to the sea ) it's mainly an open air room, the floor is the sand, with wood ceiling and partially open wooden walls too, like 70 feet away from the sea, I'm just upgrading my audio, I have an Electrovoice subwoofer EKX-18SP, the EKX-15P monitor x 2, and I'm planning to hang them with steel wires near the ceiling like about 10 inch away from the ceiling, close of the middle of the venue and close to a side wooden wall maybe like 3 feet away ( just above the Dj booth )... doing this for protection from sand and sea too. Do you find this configuration ok? or what would you recommend me to get a better configuration? thanks a lot ! really helpful videos!!! support !

I put only one subwoofer on some unused pair of Dynaudio speaker stands and my results personally was I actually got a substantial improvement in sound quality versus using two of the same subwoofers on the ground. This was with the SVS-SB3000’s. I’ve moved on to Rythmik F18SE’s and I am pretty sure I need to raise the 120lb subwoofer at least 18 inches off the ground…. Not sure what I’m going to use since my subwoofer has the dimensions of a garage ready freezer.

What about 2 woofers which are firing opposite directions of each other? The recoil energy would be nulled, or rather transferred to the opposite side. The Kef blades speakers are designed like this, the old Magnavox stereos with 12 inch woofers firing in opposite directions kept the cabinet from feeding back low frequencies into the record player. Acoustic Research AR9 speakers also.

Dennis I'm convinced about raising the subs plural off the ground. My room is wider than long so my 2.2 channel stereo listening is off to the right side due to traffic flow on the left side entryway. Am I best served using one of your stands and stacking two 10 inch subs in the right corner giving me varying height and multiplication factor, or better to use another platform and put the other sub in the FAR left corner or perhaps midway to the left, closer to listening position? I'd rather spend the money on proper set up to get QUALITY as you said, then spend thousands on better and more powerful subs. Thankyou

Your idea of a study of Speaker Boundary Interference Effect (SBIE) is very interesting. I wonder if your results will be consistent between the floor and speaker until you reach the half way point between the speaker and both the floor and ceiling. At that point will the result will be a mirror of the speaker to floor now becoming the distance from speaker to ceiling. At some point there will be a maximum effect for placing a low frequency speaker into that space. It may be interesting to repeat these measurements at varying distances from the walls as well as from the corners of the room. Some very definite advantages to your having this knowledge. Please share with us when finished. Thanks KEN

@@AcousticFields Every room can be like a big jar, the audio energy is like placing various sized solids in the jar. Big rocks are like Bass, medium stones are like mid range sounds while the treble, high frequency sound is like sand in the jar. There is a maximum amount of solids the jar will hold and the same goes for sound energy in a room. Measuring the limit of sound capacity of a room is the first step in every analysis. When the sound energy exceeds the ability for the room to contain it, you either have to reduce the amount of sound (volume) or find a way to transform it. The sound energy remains (reverberation) until it is changed to heat energy since energy cannot be created or destroyed only changed in its form. This transformation can be the room structure and contents or by adding materials within the room to do the transformation.

So I want to add a sub and assume I have to use a down firing sub. I don’t want to get into why. But I found my ideal location for bass response with a 8” monitor. It measures 2ft off the ground from center of the driver but it’s a front firing speaker. With a Down firing sub would I measure from the front of the driver to floor to replicate the same height. Why? Because I want to see if I can fit it in a location before so buy it.

The direct the sub woofer fires, whether from the cabinet side or bottom, the room only sees the energy coming from. The energy it produces, in all directions, are waves of energy that oscillate through our rooms. Sub energy is emitted in a 360 degree pattern.

@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 2 года назад

So to turn this on it's head - what are your thoughts on purposely putting them on the floor to increase the vibrational transfer to your body as you watch movies? I've been researching many videos and what I've found is that if you create a floating floor that can flex/vibrate and put the subs on this along with your sofa then you feel the bass dynamics 10 fold in movies. I'm also figuring out a way to raise and decouple them when not watching movies with some kind of wheel raiser system when I want to enjoy music instead. Think about why a sub fires into the floor. It is the same principle as corner sub placement. The goal is more amplitude or strength using the room as a part of the overall sound . This is also the quantity versus quality paradigm. If you elevate, you can improve room response. You can also attenuate or absorb energy close to source and also minimize the floor to subwoofer vibrations.

Interesting points you make and I've heard similar points made on other sub vids that back up your info. I often hear experts say if you position a sub aesthetically and don't touch it theres a 99% chance its in a bad spot. I listen to music only and with my subs (2x svs sb2000's) I placed one next to a speaker and the other behind the other speaker and left them there because I can't fit them anywhere else. On a timber floor they sit up on isolation feet (only 2.5inchs/7cm high) and were tuned by a guy from my local hifi shop. Long story short, they sound magnificent right where they are. Bass instruments sound real and theres no wooly bloatiness at all. So maybe a tune is all you need?

If you pressure balance the room, the sub will sound good almost anywhere. The room does not care what you want to do or where you want to place this sub or that speaker. it. It will react to that energy you put into it. It will like some frequencies that correspond to its dimensions, most frequencies below 100 hz. it wll not like.producing pressure and reflection issues. It only sees energy. The room dimenions and how they relate to each other mathematically, will tell you where to position the low frequency generating source.

The subwoofer is a low frequency producing source. The room does not want it. It will do everything within its physical power to fight with each wavelength that the sub produces. This fight goes on full time at all pressure levels. Finding the proper position is a good first start. Place the sub in the center of the room as a start position. Move 1' forward and then 1' back. Repeat with sidewalls. Elevate at least 18" off the ground for this testing. Spend at least 2 songs listening at each position change. Play a full range song with lots of low end then play a "regular" song with strong vocals

@@AcousticFields In a home theater Subwoofer setup...If sound quality and imaging is the #1 priority...There is only one way and one set of inputs to use...High level inputs directly from your front 2 main channels amplifier terminals. Shared with your two main speakers. I use banana's that allow for second banana to be plugged into them. Whatever "stank" your main two channels amp is sending to your main speakers is the exact same "stank" you want going to your subwoofers (yes, you will need 2) as stereo subwoofers Image as much as any two main speakers...the magic happens when, a quality pair of sub's work together with high resolution speakers to paint the soundscape. Keeping the drivers smaller makes for quicker bass and quicker recovery of the driver. Pair of 12's for impact...absolutely. Sound quality, pair of 8's will do nicely. No, not the 100.00 specials on Amazon unless budget dictates. Stick to the bigger names. Rel performance can be had for less money in say the Martin Logan Dynamo 400. As an example. Most (let's say enough) of the bass signal is contained in the front 2 channels to satisfy the bass needs of any home theater. Switch to 2 channel for critical listening and marvel at the imaging and sound quality. Stay away from RCA inputs. Don't sacrifice any sound quality just for convenience, you don't have to. Having said all that...2 sub's running in stereo are the foundation of the soundscape. Subwoofer's at different height levels would abstract the foundation of every soundscape that is rendered. Unbalancing the stereo image...No staggering subwoofer height's and always (without exception) run stereo sub's. I'm all for getting them off the floor but at the same height for any listening evaluation. Ear level might be interesting.

I have a question regarding subwoofers. The little church that I work with had installed a subwoofer on the back end of the stage and it's not a very big stage but it's where the base amp and drum kit reside. I thought 'why do we have a subwoofer right next to the base amp?' So I moved the sub to a tiny room off the side of the stage. I wanted to get it far enough away. Generally speaking do you think this was a good choice on my part? Thanks!

I have no doubt this is true and am very much looking forward to the videos on subwoofer "elevation". However, even decoupling it, I wonder if there aren't floor types to which a subwoofer may be coupled? While this wouldn't work in our old house (oak parquet), I have occasionally heard subs coupled with spikes to hard surfaces with great results - e.g. concrete floor in a basement with no cavities underneath.

Let me open by saying, I am by no means, a novice in speaker technology, and placement. I found this video while net surfing and thought I would give this a try, by mounting my sub high. The good notes are, I noticed a fuller bass response with music as well as an increase in bass sound volume. The ugly is, the bass became more "boomy" as the bass bounced over the walls. Keep in mind, this is just an everyday home with artwork on the walls and bare wall. I know a large assortment of sound diffusers mounted on the walls would fix the boomy-ness. But is that what I really want? So back on the floor, in the corner of the room it went, where the carpet clamps out much of that boomy-ness and delivers that smooth, punchy, deep bass. Summary, I'm not opposed to mounting it up high again, however, another expense in preparing the walls would be needed just to fine tune a high mounted sub.

Bass is omni directional so rase the sub up just changes the frequency of the add/ cancellation effects of reflection energy. Subs go on the floor to decrease this effect. By having the a surface close you have almost zero delay and achieve a better response. The corner of the room on the floor or ceiling gives maximum output but not the best response the next position recommend is 3/4 from the side walls which gives a better response with less output. Rising the sub up is bad for two reasons. The response will be worse and output will suffer. The only way this will help is in the corners where moving the sub off the floor will be the same as moving it out from the wall and the wall will then be the boundary you stay close to instead of the floor. Hope this helps as it is from years of research this is well known. Multiple subs also smooth response two or even 4 subs 3/4 from walls give a very even respond throughout most of the room.
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 2 года назад
We have found that multiple subs are not cost effective for the improvements granted. If the cost of multiple subs, which only deals with lower frequencies is spent on treatment, you can impact all frequencies, not just a small group. Stay away from room boundary surfaces. The goal is less room distortion not more. Placing a sub in a corner produces room gain not sub woofer sound quality. It is best to hear the speaker first instead of the room distortion. Quantity is not quality.
@davidweitendorf1053
@davidweitendorf1053 2 года назад
Acoustic fields, you don't understand that when you move from the wall the reflection is what causes problems with the direct sound so by limiting the distance of one boundary you get less interference and more of the direct sound. Having the sub in the wall is actually ideal as the reflection is then zero for that boundary. Multiple subs are not a requirement for a single listening chair but as soon as you have multiple seats it is the only way to achieve a uniform response at more locations by breaking up nodes to get even pressure areas in the room. I suggest that you consult the many resources available on the subject. Audioholics has good videos on the subject that site the research sources and explain in detail how bass interaction works in a room.
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields Год назад
Once again, quantity is not sound quality. Multiple subs are an expensive way to realize only a 3-5 dB improvement. Most rooms need +1 0 - + 3 dB improvements. This method is an expensive bandaid. Spend you doolars treating the room response. It is the most effective way to produce measurable results over a broader frequency range.

@@AcousticFields Thanks for the link. So essentially it is an absorbent-stuffed box (Roxul 80 or similar). For energy management, there is a volume control on the back of a sub. Absorption up to 200 Hz is quite high, and the vast majority of subs have a crossover frequency adjustment. 30 Hz is not terribly low, as some subs go well below 20 Hz. Re elevation, I can see that removing it from a surface (1 dimensional corner) may be advantageous. But why not an open frame? Maybe slats, as a form of a diffusor? An absorbent-stuffed box can simulate height, but it also will have non-linear frequency response. I am tempted to make an open frame and see what that does. Fun little woodworking project. Looking forward to part 3 with some comprehensive measurements. Will be pretty complex as it involves 3D soundlevels, frequency response, plus room characteristics and then with sub on floor, on your stand, suspended, open box. Will be difficult to generalize. 3D statistics to show significant difference will also be complex. I've done linear series with nested MANCOVAs, but never looked into 3D data stats. It’s an air canon. That’s it. I use a Sony powered ten I found along side the road for my bass guitar amp. It’s perfect for low B string. The way I look at subs is that you have a flute that acts like an air canon. A 7’ 1/4 E is hard to reproduce with out some color or distortion. I like some color but it takes up space. So the ten on the floor (my floor happens to be concrete) will project the low fundamentals and retain timber as the wave defuses in the room. It’s more punch than harmonic . For the rest of the spectrum I use an ampeg B-18. Its 35 Watts pushing an 18” full range cone with an alnico magnet. It moves gracefully for a fat guy. The ten is on the ground with the 18 on top. I like the fission of an 18; it spreads the low middle frequencies without the 200hz bump( full range cone) subs are a small speaker with high Xmaxx to blow across a box like a flute.

Yes, actually it does if you can equalize, and your floor is solid enough to not vibrate or do other nonlinear things. Each time you add a boundary condition, you're getting gain for free since it confines the radiation and directs it towards the listeners position rather than just letting it freely radiate out into space. Its the same reason you get the 6 dB "baffle step" when the frequency becomes low enough for the sound to diffract around the cabinet and radiate into, more or less, a 4π space. Putting it near the floor/wall or in a corner decreases the acoustic load angle and provides gain. Obvious benefits are increasing the sensitivity of the subwoofer, but like adding fuel injection to your muscle car, you need to compensate for the effects of the boundary condition with measurements and equalization just as you would have to flash the ECM to tune the engine. But the benefits are reduced excursion for a given SPL output, and increased headroom, much like my V8 muscle car getting a more reasonable 16 MPG in the city. That said rather than just throwing a 650 Holley double pumper on there its worth while to get books like Sound Reproduction from Dr. Floyd Toole which has nice discussions on these things with useful insights. Elevating is not without merit, though, but should only be done if you have crummy subflooring and walls that will vibrate and alter the response.
@AcousticFields
@AcousticFields 2 года назад
It does not provide real gain with real acoustic quality to it. All you have to do to listen to this is to elevate your sub to ear level and listen to the sub away from room boundary surfaces. Compare the attack and decay, definition, and separation of the lower frequencies with this approach to placing it next to a room boundary surface. They are as different as night and day. It is all room distortion.
@mysock351C
@mysock351C 2 года назад
@@AcousticFields I have done stepped sine distortion measurements. Even at 105 dB at the listening position, the sub distortion is less than 1% THD and the response flat. Provided the sub flooring and walls are rigid enough, you get substantial gain. I put the sub in question into a corner where the floor is concrete and it can attain up to around 115 dB despite being relatively low cost and only a 10 in driver. If the flooring and walls allow it’s worth experimenting with. But as you imply if they move a lot then he sub has to be out of the boundary condition.

Give it a try and report back to us what you hear. Try and raise off the floor at least 12".

The floor material type could be an issue but in the overall presentation value, it is a small variable of concern.

It's the absolute worst on the floor. The room is unstable as is. More bass is just more instability to the sound field. Off the floor, it gets the proper treatment and close to flat sound you're looking for.

Yes, why would someone place a low-frequency producing device next to a room boundary surface. Manufacturers do this to increase room distortion and gain. They believe that quantity is quality. I have been told many times by manufacturers that raising the sub off the floor creates liability issues which I can understand. What I can not and will not accept that you place a large surface area, low-frequency driver, 3" from a floor or wall.

If you can hang the subwoofer on the wall near the ceiling is the best option. Just like in the cinema.

There is no one size fits all rooms. What will work inside a certain room volume, will not work in another.

It's essentially a Hummer. Big on sound, small on efficiency.

Todays subs have come a long way. The drivers are stronger and can move faster. The electronics to manage all of this mechanical energy have improved and cabinet design also. Now, if I could get people to pay this level of attention to their room, I will indeed have accomplished something.

It could sound better. If you are happy with the level you have reached, then mission accomplished.
