i have had a 1972 charger project for like 10 years now, got it when i was in 8th grade. Has a lot of performance options but has column shift. so a few years ago i was able to snag a slapstick plus center console assembly for like $170. need to work on that thing

I love Slap Sticks. I have a Slap Stick shifter unit and best I can tell it will bolt right onto the A Body console bracket in my ‘69 Barracuda. Might take a little fab work to fit my stock shifter handle and linkage, but I’d love to have one hiding under my A Body console. Gotta be the best stock race type shifter ever.

I've had other ratchet-style shifters with a cable and they always screw up at the worst possible time. A slapstick always works fantastic. I put mine in another brand of car with a Chrysler transmission and it works great. Not that hard to mount if you have all the brackets

Catching up on your videos. It looked like you used a later T-handle that had the little bulge-out in the back under the mounting screw. Early ones were flat all the way down. Its been years but I remember reading there was a real reason for it, either to better center the gear indicator over the letters, or to make for a tighter fit and smoother operation of the shifter... but I'm not sure and can't find my old notes. My '71 came with the flat back T-handle but the dealer replacement I bought around 1981 had the bulge. Worked fine. The one with the bulge is probably correct for a '72. Hoping a 3D printed version that is more solid but uses the internal and cosmetic parts of a real t-handle will be available at some point. Really useful video! Thanks!

I've broken a couple of the T Handles over the years. From leaning on them or putting something on them, not from hard shifting. I think the pistol grip would be a lot more durable. My 72 Road Runner is blue also. Column shift, bench seat.
@JustMoparJoe

I found out the T handles don’t take weight very well. They are kind of brittle, and this reproduction is not much better. I will have a classic column shifter in my dart sport. It’s fun to yank down into 1st and haul it!

@JustMoparJoe

Welcome aboard! This is for an automatic 727 transmission. It’s purpose is to allow you quick and precise shifts between gears when racing or going full throttle. It’s a factory ratcheting shifter. Pretty cool technology for back in the day.

thats awesome how it changes colour (yes I'm Canadian lol)! question, how do you feel about using a heli coil on a stripped torque converter bolt hole? when i put the 360 in, one of the bolts kept spinning. i tried tapping it but those ARP's just ate it again.
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 года назад
reace w I would not. You could drill and tap that hole to the next largest size. Most performance converters use larger than factory sized. 7/16 from 5/16.

@@JustMoparJoe funny enough i have 7/16 arp bolts that i bought first. i am using the a904 so i have a weighted flex plate. is it still okay to only upsize one bolt?

reace w I don’t think you’d notice the difference, but the best practice is to get a converter shop or machine shop to weld on a new pad. It depends on your budget.

Anyone know if it’s possible to stick one of these in a 69 B body, center console? I like the stock look and I’d prefer not to put some lame looking after market shifter in. Or is there a bunch of mounting the earlier cars didn’t have?
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 2 года назад
I’m not sure on that. I would think if you have the floor mounts, you could switch in a ratcheting mechanism
@williamturner8422
@williamturner8422 Год назад
I put a 1970 slapstick shifter in my 1968 Dodge Charger. The SlapStick has the same mounting bolt pattern as the stock 68 and 69 Charger. But the shift linkage has to have the hole relocated closer to the pivot shaft on the bellcrank that goes thru the hole in the floorboard. This would be super easy to show someone but is pretty hard to explain in writing.
@williamturner8422
@williamturner8422 Год назад
1970 slapstick has a round shift stalk and knob, that looks like a 69 Charger. 71-73 slapstick has a flat shifter stalk and a T- handle.
@williamturner8422
@williamturner8422 Год назад
The 68 Charger has the neutral safety switch on the shifter. So I just put the 3 pin neutral safety/ back-up light switch from a 1969 Charger automatic a ran the wires to the transmission mounted neutral safety switch.
@williamturner8422
@williamturner8422 Год назад
The stock Charger shifter bends back towards the driver and is easy to reach. The 1970 Challenger Slapstick shifter( round stalk) is just straight , and may be hard to reach while wearing a racing harness .

Can I install this on my '81 Imperial with the A904 transmission?
@JustMoparJoe

Great video! I’m having serious trouble with my aftermarket Mr. gasket shifter, the clicks on the shifter do not match the clicks on the 727 apparently. I took my car to the track last weekend and it ruined my whole day, had to leave the car and drive at the track which was not as fun as it could’ve been. Is there a way that my shifter is not a Mopar shifter? Are there a ton of different kinds of gates for the grooves of the shifters? I’m assuming this but I need to do more research. Don’t want to burn up my new trans
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 года назад
Did the cable get burned on a header or did it stretch? I’ve had them stretch and not quite be in the right gear. I think they’re the same as Chevy 3 speeds. They offer my shifter with 5 different brackets for different makes. Same cable and shifter for all. I always set mine up in neutral. That way when you pull into 1st or 3rd, it’s on the money. Park works fine but feels kinda weird on the shifter itself. Basically get the shift rod in neutral, adjust your shifter cable so it drops right in, and then pin it. 👍🏼
@maximuswedgie5149
@maximuswedgie5149 3 года назад
@@JustMoparJoe thanks Joe, the cable on mine most likely has too much cable showing not in the cable housing. It literally bends when I put it in park. It slipped out of park a few months ago on my driveway. When I had adjusted it before I had to make a choice: it manually going into 1st or it fully engaging in park. I chose the park. I will try to set up in neutral for sure this weekend. . Do folks put springs on the trans shifter linkage to “ help” it function? Always Appreciate you taking time to answer Joe. Thanks 🙏
@JustMoparJoe
@JustMoparJoe 3 года назад
@@maximuswedgie5149 if you mean the kick down linkage? Yes. Springs just hold it tightly against the carb so it gets an accurate reading of throttle position. I can’t imagine a spring anywhere else.

@@JustMoparJoe thanks Joe, I have the Lokar cable setup with a spring on my kick down, while I was at the track the Mopar guys confirmed that was all good, my shifter is a really old Mr Gasket that pushes down to engage, I’m looking at aftermarket shifters, hopefully that fixes it.
