I'm an advertising executive and I am surprised how many brands come to my agency wanting magic with no insight or direction. They want to be everything to everyone, don't know who their buyers are, or who they want to target. They want a short cut, for lightning to strike and blow up on social media or get showcased on Oprah or something with no realistic time frame, or plan. They also often don't have realistic budgets. You can't beat Nike or Ralph Lauren with $50k. You can however be something special to a niche group who doesn't want Nike.
I do digital marketing. I feel your pain. My previous client thought just putting his company logo on an ad will work and people would just buy lol...not the case. I told him the reality of finding customers that'll buy via ads.
What these newbie clothing people fail to realize is that most brands started with a FUNCTION. like Nike wanted to make great running shoes so they had a problem to solve. A Nike t shirt with a logo is not functional at all. Same for Ralph Lauren....all he did was make ties and perfected it. I think Louis Vuitton just wanted to make the best luggage...they perfected the functions with their name on it.
I hate these types of thumbnails. This video is timely though as champion is having a contest giving up and coming designers a couple hundred blank tops for free
