My father has hunted and eaten every squirrel he’s ever killed. He’s 78 now and has always kept meticulous records. He’s killed over 4,000 squirrels and just killed his 100th whitetail. He retired from deer hunting but still chases squirrels 🐿️
@@colbykinney5633 sure does. He’s in southern Missouri n still likes to fish. Runs a few predator traps in December n January, too. The man has literally spent his entire life in the woods or on the river when he wasn’t at work.
Always sad when your grandpa has to retire from hunting because you’ll miss getting out with him. Wish I could hear some of your grandfathers deer stories!
I'm a Park Ranger, so I can scout everyday. I live a half a mile from the park. I'm blessed beyond words. The park is 2,000 acres. Yet, I haven't killed a nice buck in 3 years; I've been strictly mobile hunting since 2021. It's a whole different game hunting big bucks; despite my effort I still have a long way to go.
I'm from deep South Louisiana and I stumbled across your content on a hunting forum right before the start of this hunting season. I found your RU-vid channel and started watching it religiously and taking notes. After taking a bunch of your advise and a lot of scouting I took my best buck to date on our lease. I found some beds in an area were we have never hunted and ended up killing a real nice 10 point on my first morning hunt in the new location. We haven't had that deer on came for over a month in our normal areas. Thanks for all the tips!
I've been hunting Clark County WI public for a good many years. It's really been tough the last few years. The county has been selling the timber and huge areas are being clear cut. It's forcing hunters into areas that usually I would have to myself. I still have a few areas, but have been going to neighboring counties for better opportunities.
Hitman. Lol . That big boy you got this year . Was 5 plus, at least got to live and run and breed and fight wild, free under the sun and sky. Can’t say that about grocery store steak
Hey Dan, that was a weather collection device you guys found in the tree. I found one here in North Carolina several years ago that had apparently just fallen. It had instructions from NOAA National Weather Service where to mail it back for them to collect the data it captured. It was a pretty cool find. I still have pictures of it buck can't attach any here.
I found a scrape getting hit today fare back in the gamelands where I hunt in pa the buck hitting the scrape is reaching taller than me at 6”2… you think that buck is mature… because I know there big bucks in there
Learning a lot from your scouting videos. I scout in the snow and find it difficult to fully know whether to hunt it or not so this video was helpful, thanks Dan and crew!
My wife and I would still rate whitetail as number one but squirrel meat is a close second! I keep a 22 rifle upstairs and the screens out of the windows in case I see one near the house! Thanks for sharing Dan, Mario and Eric!
Cover is everything to a buck that hits 4 or 5. When leaves fall in some areas it's all but over. Doesn't mean the hunt is over but u need options just like u need to prep areas this time of year. I made a couple of webbed straps. The clips r made from a 3D printer as well as the bow holder. It weighs less than that screw in peg in that tree. Plus u can store it in a pocket or pack w/o poking yourself. One for larger 🌳 & one for smaller. On the larger strap where I have more cover in a larger 🌳 that is very busy with branches & I have 3 accessory clips & a bow clip that I stealth stripped that come on & off. In a large, busy 🌳 I will have more camera gear. I have no confidence in hunting telephone pole trees @ close range. There is always an exception & my exception is getting into poplar 🌳 that r surrounded by very bushy red oaks. They usually have junctions where the deer r moving both north to south & west to east. Much higher chance of getting close w/o blowing your ambush spot. More like rut funnel spots since the north to south movement is predominantly female.😮
Your statement about "the hitman" is exactly how I feel. Most people think that hunters are evil, kill-crazy people but eat beef, pork, and chicken that someone else killed for them. They don't mind someone else getting the "black marks" for killing something but they never would do it themselves.
Dan, I just want to say thank you mainly because your influence has made me me a much more productive bow hunter. I started watching your videos just to get closer to the bedding and up my chances. I had to buy a new freezer because i filled the first one. Now i meed a third for taxidermy! I shot nine deer this year! Your videos help me feed my family. I haven’t bought ground meat from a grocery store in three deer seasons. I cant express how much I appreciate you Dan! -thanks from Michigan
I love the scouting vids as much as the hunting ones...so true with snow cover in winter.Gun hunt in No. Mn, the places where you hunt and see deer may have no tracks at all...find one deer and find many .Food plus cover makes them move. And, you may not see the sign you are looking for, but, you can always learn something. Finally, squirrels probably dont live long anyway, they taste just like chicken...well maybe tough chicken.👍
DAN THE MAN I’m a young man with not much of a father. Have a little boy of my own and been through some tough years. Your content hasn’t changed and has made me a better man and bow hunter. Thanks
Last year i had a co worker that was one of them guys that was the best hunters ever was!! He wanted to have a good old fashion squirrel tournament. He got 4 of his buddies and i only got 1 of mine. Needless to say he didnt show up at the meet to compare our kills lol!!
I am 41 years old and have never found a shed in my life. Big woods northern MN and figured I never would, I always thought the wolves ate the sheds. But yesterday doing spring scouting I found a set of sheds from a nice 8 pointer, 3-4 years old! Then I found a dead head from a nice 8 pointer! That was really cool, trophies for me! Scouting was good too
Never found a shed and I'm the same age. Hunted my whole life and when I started watching Dan was when I found my first sheds/deadheads. In the last 2 years I'm at 10 total now.
Don't worry about showing unsuccessful scouting. I enjoy the videos of walking through the woods or swamp regardless. I can't do that as much anymore and I enjoy every minute watching it and doing it. Did you hear about someone getting the bear bait buck or do you figure it's dead because of age?
Yes... You need to be the detective and figure out when the bedding was / will be used based on various clues such as food, proximity to doe bedding, and of coarse cover.
Ive come across areas also where hunters(if you want to call them that lol) have cut down shooting lanes that you can see from outer space. Cant understand why they would want other hunters to know where they hunt but i guess its good for us cuz now we know where not to hunt since that one spot probably gets pounded all the time by the same person. 🤦♂️
that area is very large I wouldn't give up after one day of scouting. it seems like all of those areas had pressure during and or after season. We have been finding big ones all over not far from there.
Agreed, there are some bucks there somewhere, but covering the distance we covered and not finding one mature buck rub means it will be a task to find a deer to go after. They are there, and with work can be found, but its going to be a lot more work than other areas.
@@thehuntingbeast I suppose when you have mastered your primary areas close to home where there is alot of sign and you know there’s mature bucks around it’s hard to want to go somewhere where the sign isn’t as concentrated. Going up there is almost like an out of state hunt you have to drive far spend more money cover more ground and there’s time between trips so it’s harder to stay in em when they shift. I’ve never hunted by you but live prolly 45 minutes north. Our area here seems to have 100x the pressure I see up there, however up there it’s bears wolfs and there seems to be tons of cover and food for miles. I know there’s big ones in both areas I just fell in love with the big woods since I was 12 I knew it was more challenging I was intimidated for years. I didn’t think it was possible to find big bucks consistently until I came across your videos. I was young and dumb and thought I had it figured out. Half way thru the first video of yours I seen I was quickly humbled and realized I didn’t know shit. Me and many others greatly appreciate having much success thanks to you. Really helped me in accepting the challenge and not only becoming a better hunter and woodsman but just a man in general. IT AINT EASY BEIN BEASTY. Been watching many years now and look forward to the upcoming content. Good luck to you and the entire beast crew!
Whats your thought on a forest of ash tree's all came down and now its like a Is impenetrable tangle of every angle Lincoln logged trees? I really believe China had something too do with bringing over that beatle to slowly destroy are beloved forests that us hunting outdoorsman loves. I ran into a couple Chinese people at a walking trail 5 years ago they had back packs and brief cases, when i seen that i automatically said to myself after i thought about it about i wouldn't doubt they have the ash Beatles and maybe another little critter destroyer to try to get are God given America the pummeling of life. When these thoughts come to mind sometimes its reality and know doubt it chaps my arse😔
Originally from Asia, the emerald ash borer was first discovered in the Detroit area in 2002. It is believed to have entered the country on wooden packing materials from China. The bright metallic-green beetle may be smaller than a dime, but it is capable of taking down ash trees thousands of times its size. Adults are typically ½ inch long and ⅛ inch wide.
Dan do you even realize that the DEC thought thay would be cool and open up a two week gun season before archery to shoot doe. It puts them in a quick lock down in one of the best time to slap the old buck. Then the shocker first weekend a youth gun hunt for what ever they want to shoot, obviously man has a quick way to try to destroy are beloved archery and love for the sport from not caring or lack of knowledge, because there just suit wearing dumb democrats
Am I being too sensitive or that “Ching Chong “ comment was a bit racist? I know some Asian hunters and they are the coolest people. I don’t support racism and that wasn’t cool. Please explain.
Your to sensitive... We have Asian friends too. My bet is your a White Liberal. Doubt that made any person with Chinese heritage do anything other than laugh. Racism is only in existence to help the Democratic party. No one in modern time judges anyone by skin color.
