Needless to say: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Just showing you some random "shutter" thing I concocted a few days before Hurricane Ian passed by. Obviously, this is not an "official" way to do things, but it's the best I had at the time. Just thought I'd share what I did.

For the future, make an awning out of those, hinged, 2 piece, and lower it and latch it for protection, and you have them at the ready all the time, plus some protection when you walk out the door.

Half the stuff I do in life is don't try this at home.. I'm totally impressed, I watched the time lapse and saw you wearing flip flops and said this guy has to be in Florida.. Only here do we wear them doing everything.. you built a beautiful home...

look at the old sliding barn door sliding channels and see if you can relocate you one outside light and make a shipping container sliding wall that can be pinned into place

Maybe after this storm weld some brackets for window and doors for full protection in the future.....and escape hatch in the ceiling or floor

Yes Ive done some thinking on possible systems for installing hurricane shutters on the container home. I love the idea of some kind of sliding panel on wheels that can just be pushed/slid to cover all windows/sliders, like a bomb shelter. But that would be much more intricate a design. But yeah welding some brackets around the angle iron frame of windows and doors could be the solution.

Those pine trees bend just like the coconut trees back in my home country of the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 when the hurricanes came around.

It best to be prepared then be sorry. Make shift Hurricane panels were a good thing to place on your windows, especially your sliders. You were lucky you dodged this Hurricane. During the of season you can plan for next hurricane season to protect all your windows. No matter a Tropical Storm or a possible Category 5 Hurricane. As you watch the pine trees in your yard that would have been a real hassle to have one of them fall on your container home creating a problem for you. You may want to consider cutting them back from the house so they don't do damage if they fall in the future to your house. Yeah I know how much of a hassle a pine tree can be to damage on the roof and water damage in the house during Hurricane Wilma that hit Florida Keys with high winds and flooded the keys. A pine tree damaged the roof and I would still be waiting for help to repair if I would not have repaired myself October 2005. From June 1 to November 30 is Hurricane season in Florida Preparation for it is the Key you prepare for the worst and hope for the best!!! Glad to see you did not have any damage from the storm.

Over here in Puerto Rico during Maria (cat 5) the only windows covering that actually worked were screwd in with long screws. Most aluminum"tormenteras" what we call them here, failed in many cases.

i find this hilarious because where i live we get an average of 54mph wind every day and no one "shutters" there house. our town is basically a huge wind tunnel. its normal. its fine. it hasn't killed anyone even with stuff flying everywhere.
@tomk2147
@tomk2147 Год назад
Yeah only hilarious until you get 8 to 15 feet of storm surge on top of wind of 100 plus mph. Take a look at the destruction from storm surge and wind on Ft Myers Beach and combined with flood waters. Then let's see how hilarious you think it is at that point in time!!! By the way 54 mph is considered a tropical storm in any coastal community however Hurricane IAN was a Category 4 hurricane not a laughing matter!!! As well as with the tropical to a Category 4 Hurricane there are possible pop up Tornados as well NOT too Hilarious!!! This did happen with the outer bans a tornado was North of Lauderdale area at the Perry Airport; planes were tossed like toys!!! PLUS Hurricanes are extremely unpredictable especially the direction can change prior to land fall history shows this clearly with Hurricane Andrew in 1992 it was to hit Ft Lauderdale and doglegged south to Homestead was ground zero. TRUST me Hurricanes are NOT on the top of the list of Hilarious. You are correct 54MPH in your area is a daily thing but Hurricanes are serious to the point of what happened in Ft Myers Beach and across middle counties in Florida from the gulf thru to the ocean side of Florida. Now many people In Florida are in financial troubles because of the Hurricane and hyper inflation are very much going take several years to recover from Hurricane Ian!!! How HILARIOUS Now?

I would look into making a French cleat and having door and window covers You can pick them up and set them on the French cleat and screw them at the bottom in and they won't fly off. Go ahead and weld you something you can just replace the wood every few times. . And leave you room to open and close doors to get in and out. Also look into a trap door to get out in case a tree falls on your main doors or something.
