That noise is the rocker arms and the cam it’s nothing major but I would still get it fixed. Love the vids man 🤘🏻

Glad you were able to fix the head. I'll bet the jam nut fell out the hole in the head. Not down the cam chain area! Looks like a fun beater!!!

your valvetrain noise is most likely that damaged camshaft, it is toast and should be replaced. that is overall a nice atv for its year.

That thing is ticking pretty bad I use to have one back in the day and it was a really smooth running engine very similar to a 300ex and fourtrax 300 very cool brother keep it up awesome content

I would’ve changed the valve seals for the intake as well, just to eliminate any smoking issues questions about the valves plus I think I would’ve put a small piece of screen door screen under the JB weld, kinda like doing concrete and using rebar to reinforce it ✊

The Cam is balanced perfect, shaving off will effect the motor, just like the crank shaft, I'm sure it'll run long enough for you to sell it

what type of gasket maker do you use? is it RTV?

It needs new rocker arms.They have worn through the case hardening and will wear rapidly putting metal into the oil.

JB weld. Hmm. Pretty temporary!! Disclose this to your buyers. I guess the repair fits the overall condition of the bike.

I once found his ad for a ktm 500cc from the 80s saying it was perfect and had no issues. Having watched the videos of him working, I knew it still had major issues so I texted him to call him out on his bs and he removed the ad instantly. Being a mechanic I already knew his work was bad at best, but that shit has gotten me pissed off.

The valve train will always make noise because the rocker arms need to have the conture ground back into it where it was ground flat from wear

The chatter is the rocker arms or timing chain guides when wore they make more noise the wore ricker arms change the ratio and they will make more noise

The rockers and cam is toast. Definitely sounds down on power and is smoking. Needs a good top end refresh and looks like some cable/wire management, chain and sprockets, etc.

I’m not sure if it really applies to this head specifically but I had to do a top end rebuild on a 1985 Honda 250 big red and it says that no lapping or grinding should be done on the valves because they have a special coating from factory, if you do it says they’ll fail right away or soon after, it may not apply to that machine but just a tip for down the road.

The JB Weld repair is in an unpressurized part of the cylinder head that faces no compression or combustion cycles. That repair would not bother me at all. Many race engines have custom heads that have putty in them they used to form smooth airways that is essentially JB Weld.

The tick in the top end is probably that cam the the valve lash adjustment screwed up. All the time I was looking at the hole in the engine I was thinking about exactly how I would heli-arc it back shut. I just didn't think of jb weld. I think if you pushed the JBWeld down into the hole and reached under to have it be locked into place it might be a tiny bit better. But cleaning the surface with brake cleaner it probably will never come loose.

Most older 4 strokes are tappy on the top end the amount of times I’ve taken a head off to check valve gap and it’s fine, only way to get rid of that noise is to set the valves to 0.01 lol but who wants that !

Ya, the power loss might be substantial with the bad head and exhaust. I seriously had a 250x almost as good as my 400x fun wise. Small, power and wheelie monster.

If that is a aluminum head take it to a professional shop that can weld aluminum and get it welded and machine the surface down it'll be like a brand new head if it's done right

That JB Weld fix ain't gonna hold it will eventually start leaking as the head goes through a few heat cycles so my suggestion is take the head to a welder and have them TIG weld it shut permanently

Get some fram 40 weight, and some engine restore, engine tapping/smoking will quiet down substantially
