If li'l JL had been Troi's kid, then Riker would not have figured this out so quickly.

I loved Marina's acting in this episode. She really feels different from the Troi we know, and you feel like she could have 16 years of life experience over and above the character we are familiar with.

As a brass musician empathizing with Will, when young Jean-Luc said, “you always make that mistake,” he was not happy. A man like Will Riker does not repeat the same mistake for 16 years... that is way out of character. He’s figured it out the ruse!

Every time Riker tries digging into his "past", he's always conveniently needed elsewhere. Reminds me of an episode of the Justice League cartoon. Some of the League were accidentally transported to an alternate reality Earth straight out of a cheesy comic-book from the 50s. But there was something... off about it. Sinister. Every time the League tried investigating, some convenient disaster always distracted them. Literal "busload of nuns".

I like it how everyone emphasizes he needs to spend time with his son. Almost like it's the whole point of his life now.

He knows it fake as soon as he interacts with his son. No Ryker father gets along with his son.

Very sly of his captors to call her simply "Min" so as not raise any suspicion.

Honestly, I always had a tiny wish that this whole scenario was real. While the actual story was quite fascinating, the idea of having to cope with decades of memory loss, reacquainting yourself with those you love, and changes over time was an amazing concept!

At least they got Troi sporting a uniform right.

This whole time, Riker's actually in a cave with a bug-eyed alien.

The kid looks like a young Kevin Bacon.

It's always a nice gag to remind people that Frakes is an actual trombone player in RL.

I just noticed the name of the Romulan ship, Theseus. Most nerds probably heard of the ship of Theseus recently from watching Wanda vision. In the metaphysics of identity, the ship of Theseus is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. I find it interesting since during the episode Riker's memory is missing and you find out that his surroundings are constructed for him.

Some very mild clues accumulate. A bit over-the-top to name his son Jean-Luc. Then his wife's name - "Min"? Then having exactly the same trombone skill as before the incident, prompting questions whether everything about his whole personality, abilities and muscle memory and all, is dependent on the memory that was wiped out. ... Although it could. ... But this is how suspicion grows ... through subtle almost subconscious doubts accumulating. This is how it works for people with a well-developed instinct who are not totally messed up by mental concepts implanted by system indoctrination. But then the boy blew it and instead of working with the amnesia story actually attempted a clumsy because unlikely explanation, really cheesy. That must have caused such a Truman Show feeling, soap opera vibe. - And the "everything's gonna be fine" added to that. All too sunshiney. (Riker's facial expression underlined that.)

How old is that boy supposed to be? Since Riker chose the name it must be his biological child. The memory of 16 years are lost, so he must have met "Min" after that. Deanna was offered a position at starfleed headquarters, most likely after Picard left the Enterpise. That would be 9 years ago. So a child couldn't be older than 8. Duh... that's suspicious.

The idea of Will naming his son Jean-Luc is kinda cringe

Making a mistake on a trombone isn’t super unusual if you are not practicing constantly. If you are a time poor Star ship captain and Widower with a kid where would you get time to do that? What prompted the suspicion is the kids said he always made that mistake which would imply he did play the trombone regularly and if that was the case would be highly unusual to make that mistake constantly.
