Don't Wait: In Memory of Jason Hairston

KUIU Ultralight Hunting

Before what would be his final sheep hunt, KUIU Founder Jason Hairston gave a speech at KUIU’s Mountain Academy event. Bonnet Plume in Canada’s Yukon Territory was one of the hardest places he’d ever hunted Dall sheep, he said, and he was going back there in six weeks because the most difficult hunts are the most rewarding. Jason travels with Donald Trump Jr. to the Yukon to test themselves against challenges of steep terrain, unpredictable wet weather, and no bushplane access, in the hope of harvesting two Dall rams in one week. Follow along their adventure, with Jason’s speech as guidance to anyone who ever dreamed of sheep hunting: DON’T WAIT.

Got my Dall sheep at 39 years old, what a hunt. Looking back from 72 I still have the memories and little else. I'm so glad I did it then. I couldn't afford it, had better places for my money I was told, but did it anyway. The better place for the money turned out to be my wife's exit account. My advice is to taste and appreciate life to its fullest as you go along. Tomorrow, a loving family and good health is promised to no one.

great advice. i will never be able to go on a sheep hunt, health failed me, and wages in boise idaho barley pay rent. i had booked a hunt in the mid 80s with darwin watson out of the yukon. moose, grizzly and mountain goat. think the whole price was $8,000.00 ish for 14 days. my dad found out and said to me, "if you go i will disown you from the family". i wrote them and they sent back my deposit. Dumbest thing i ever did.

I am a Sheep hunter, I can attest to everything Jason said in that hunt about sheep hunting, he is 100 % correct. From being prepared and not waiting and to just do it. I am a B.C. Resident and I can hunt sheep every year. I turned 50 last June and in August 2018, around the same time Jason was on his hunt, my long time sheep hunting partner Rob and I went on another Stone sheep hunt, non guided as usual. We were flown in and dropped off for 8 days. In those 8 days we both took amazing rams and hiked a total of 102 Km or 68 miles and gained 5000 feet of altitude. It was up and down all the time and the smoke from all the forest fires around us made it even more challenging, for glassing and breathing. Prior to hunt, I trained 6 days a week, weight training, running and hiking with a weighted pack. I did that for about 6 months before the hunt. I can tell you it payed off. It makes your hunt more enjoyable. I have taken 3 Stone Sheep myself and have been there when 9 rams over the years have been taken, from Dessert to Rocky Mountain bighorns and they were all hard work, but I loved every minute of those hunts. I was prepared physically and mentally and had the best equipment I could afford. Yes, I used a Kuiu Icon pro 7200 pack and frame on the hunt in August 2018. I watched all of Jason’s videos prior to my hunts on how to pack, what gear to take and how to pack food. All professional advice that you can trust your life on, I have and many others do. Take his advice and if it’s something you have been wanting to do, go for it. You only live once. I wish I could have met Jason. On that hunt in August, I told my partner one day in camp. I am going to call Jason, when we get back and ask him how he keeps his pack under 60lbs. Mines always over 70 lbs. no matter how much I take out. I never got the chance to. I put it off to long. R.I.P. Jason and thank you.

Great video! I spent many years climbing big mountains in the western US, Canada, Alaska, and South America. Many solo, and all hard. There is something that gets in your blood that only huge expanses of space and altitude can satisfy. I gave up that life mostly about ten years ago, but this video started the itch again. Time to see if the legs can give it another go or two.

What I love most about this film is the purity of it. It transcends political preference and distills down to primal human qualities - integrity, perseverance, humility. DTJ politics are not for me, but that's irrelevant in this film. In this film, I saw human beings that EARNED my admiration and inspired me. I never knew anything about KUIU's origins until after watching this film. I'd never even heard of Jason Hairston. Now, I feel I've missed out. Quite an individual! I do know this, my decision about what gear I'm outfitting with is made. KUIU all the way. Though in my mid fifties and just now aspiring to a sheep hunt, Jason's story about his father was a real inspiration. I'm gonna get my legs right, train like hell, and maybe..., just maybe I can experience a great hunt not too unlike this! Thanks KUIU for sharing this. I think maybe I'll be a customer for life.

That’s awesome Jr. I drew a sheep tag back in the 90’s up in the chugach and thought I’d go in and get her done solo. I was wrong after I woke up in my little camp 8 miles in. I’d never hiked with a heavy pack and I had never woke up in a camp with that big of blisters on my feet. It was a good time anyway, but I found out going in solo, you better be an army ranger!!

You go for it old man. We may be slower but much wiser. Sheep hunting is about perseverance not speed.
