Don't Want To Get HACKED? Try This Brilliant and Proven Password Method - BFM 539

Gear: geni.us/BFMGearPage || After having my channel hacked and shut down over a year ago, I've discovered a near hack-proof method for passwords that is easy to learn, remember, and nearly hackproof. Once you "grok" how this works, you'll be able to have s many passwords as you want that remain easy (for you) to remember and nearly impossible for someone else to guess or hack. Trust me, getting your data hacked is terrible and this trick will keep you safe!
BIG THANKS to Phil (veteran IT guy who also runs Lets Celebrate TV) who developed this method which is used by many large companies to keep data safe.

Good method Kevin. Being an IT guy, I agree with this. The only thing I would add is not using a word for one of the bits and not storing the algorithm in a place others can find it. Your method is VERY unlikely to be hacked, but not using a word - especially one that describes you - reduces the odds even further. Also, NEVER store your password in any application and have it auto log you in - ever. Something I teach is how a secure setup like this gets completely blown out of the water if the algorithm is stored in a place others can find it or passwords are built from words. Sometimes the hackers aren't in another country, but are closer than you think - like the next room / office and maybe have direct access to you or some of your stuff. A former coworker thought her password was secure because she spoke two languages and her passwords were all in her native non-English language. Being an IT guy, I was able figure out her password because 1, they were all the same and 2, I recognized her accent, 3, her license plate said where she was from. A small amount of social engineering and I had a couple possibilities and I was able to get in right in front of her - without locking out her account. On a final note - two factor is no joke. Adding two factor, even to a junk password, keeps a lot of hacking at bay. You have to be smart about the two factor and not just approve it when one pops up. If you aren't trying to login and you get a two factor request - STOP because someone else is!

Thanks for your feedback, but I have one question. You said "Also, NEVER store your password in any application and have it auto log you in - ever". Are you afraid of the app itself being malicious or that it may be hacked in some way by external attackers ?

Thanks for the shoutout on this password technique. Someone will always say I could figure it out, but they would have to see multiple sites and multiple passwords, and that is very unlikely 🍸

Yes an interesting low-tech but effective solution. Over the last year or so I've been using 1Password which generates random passwords for you which you don't have to remember. There's only one "master" password which logs you into your password repository and from there your custom passwords are semi-automatically pasted into a website's or apps login form for you. Of course, if you lose or forget the master password I think you are pretty much screwed so there's that.

Nice. Any method that works for you is great. I wish someone would handle the hackers who are the real problem.

Great system! Simple enough to remember yet complex enough to make it hard to hack. A little secret I have been using for decades is I add a space at the end of my password, but not just any space I use the alt key + 255 combination. The naked eye does not see the space at the end but the computer sure does.

My password is always "password". Its simplicity tricks the bad guys. NOT! I always use long passwords with many characters that are normally not used (ie. ${}[]~`) and ALWAYS enable 2FA if available. Always nice to see you, Kevin. Have a great night/day! 😀

Hi Kevin, this method looks efficient at first but it has one major drawback : all your passwords are very similar. If one website gets hacked and your password for this website leaks ; then all of the sudden all of your other 20-characters-passwords are now just a 4 letter password which is the name of the website backward. You're probably better off with a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, etc.) in which you only have to remember a single password for the rest of your life. Which one you chose doesn't really matter, as long as you use a password manager that syncs with your multiple devices and provides good security. I've been using one for the last 12 years and it has been a life changer.

I came here to say exactly this. This method is an objectively bad idea. I say that not based on my own opinion, but what I've learned from security expert Steve Gibson over the past 16 years on the Security Now podcast.

Until you run into a website or school that wants you to change the password every month and won't let you use X number old passwords. Going beyond eight characters put you in the very very few minority. But it can't just be words because that's in the dictionary and that makes a Dictionary attack. So you have to have the separators. You should also have some note of this in case one we're incapacitated! So much online these days is tied to an account and after death even with a death certificate some places just don't wanna play business. So having some sort of off-line copy maybe in a safe deposit box for a family is recommended. Also be careful of social engineering attacks where you are influenced to give the two factor authentication!

I remember watching something and they mentioned that programs nowadays can guess by common words in passwords so your 16-20 whatever long password becomes like 5 characters. I use what you described here but I scramble everything together. So I just have to remember a couple words and 1 number set and the site but it’s all scrambled. It looks like jibberish but addresses that angle. So DogsEatCherries-ebut-12732 turns into Do-1gsEe2atCb7heru3rit2es-

Key Points: 🔑 1️⃣ He had his RU-vid account hacked about a year and a half ago due to an insecure password. 2️⃣ He presents a password creation method developed by his friend Phil, who has extensive computer experience and has never had his password breached. 3️⃣ Password length is critical to security; an 8-character password can be hacked in minutes or hours, while a 12-character password could take a month. 4️⃣ Phil's system makes it easy to remember the password, remembering only the beginning, the end and the site for which it is used. 5️⃣ The method consists of having an initial phrase (for example, "DogsEatCherries"), then adding the last four letters of the site name backwards, a dash and a set of personal digits. 6️⃣ The method makes it possible to have different passwords for each site without having to write them down or memorize them all. 7️⃣ He also suggests adding complexity by using different characters, such as parentheses or zeros, between password elements. 8️⃣ He points out that this method does not exclude the use of other security measures, such as two-factor authentication. 9️⃣ He challenges the public to hack a password created using his method, promising to give $1,000 to anyone who succeeds.
