Don't Wash Your Glaze Brushes - Make FREE Eco-Friendly Confetti Glaze! 

Good to see you saving your glaze from brushes and bottles. I have a box with 8 or so empty glass jars in and keep jars separate with iron rich colors, blues, greens, white, browns, oranges etc. separate to wash brushes in. When glaze settles I pour off water on top to another box of jars. Put jars with glaze solids on porch until they dry, the dried glaze can be broken up and stored in empty jar. I don't have to deal with dust and looking forward to using my mystery glaze chips soon. I miss Jeanettes videos as she is a treat to watch! 🥰

Wash brushes of similar colours in a minimal amount of water, allow water to evaporate then take out the chips. I use old takeaway coffee cups for this as they have a waxy lining making it easy to remove the glaze chips and it gives the paper coffee cups a second life as well rather than going straight in the bin.

Well... I always download spec sheets for every glaze, additive, clay body. Environmental toxicities, health hazards etc. are defined. I keep a notebook with that info. Additionally, I have an outdoor sink with a 4 ft deep drain hole and NOTHING hazardous gets washed ... mother Earth needs lotsa TLC. I love your glaze chips suggestions! Thank you!

Thanks for this! I do most of my glazing at a community studio so I’ll have to figure out how I would work this- maybe just using my own brushes, keeping them to dry in my own cubby. I am all for decreasing our impact on the environment!

I am so glad to see someone else being thrifty with glazes. I'm a bit OCD and just can't stand the dirty lids and lid liners. I've done this with my Amaco underglazes. I've also done some deliberate glaze chips . I've also done some of the bits that come in Jungle Gems to use with some other glazes. Keep them in little empty food color bottles. I had to laugh when you made the OCD comment. It sure makes me feel good to know I'm not the only one😁🤣😄

Sarah, I LOVE this!!!! I am going to change my studio habits today! I usually just soak my brushes in a minimal amount of water, then allow for evaporation, and wipe the dregs out with a tissue and toss in my trash. SO WASTEFUL in comparison. Another awesome video Sarah! Another thing I like to do is keep yr empty celadon bottles. When yr ready to use them add a bit of water shake them up then pour the watered down celadons in a mix of colours inside yr bowls like a water colour effect. Very pretty!! Nat xx

great way of recycling.....and its not sad, but responsible😉...i make really small stuff...and use for every colour a seperate little watercontiner to wash(as i use very small brushes...lol),i let it dry out completely and collect the residu on the bottum....just starting glazing and dont want anything down my sink...and luv the video's of Jeanette...makes me smile everytime😁

I've not tried this but I've seen vids of commercial glazes with chips suspended in them. I love the no waste aspect

Yes i also save my glaze the way you showed here by cleaning out the empty pots. The brushes i do different. I wash them in a glass with not to much water all together. That brush water i let untouched for about a week. The coloured residue of glaze has sank to the bottem. I then pour out as much "clear" water as possib. Then i put te glass in a warm spot so that the residue got completely dry. I scrape the dryed up residue out with a knife into my mystery chips pot. It comes out flaky and powdery. Oh Sarah what a treat to watch. I've been travelling from Canada to UK and only just had signal to watch. Fascinating to see your technique, and fab results. My mystery chips are made from the brush cleaning water where I syphon off surplus water and collect the residue. Amazing how much you can collect. I use old yoghurt pots which bend super easy to "crack off the glaze' when dry. Loved that so much I went on to make my own in individual colours. I'm as OCD as you lol. So good to recycle. My favourite combo is Mayco Cordovan, and Mayco Birch with Matco Blue Surf, on a base of 3 coats of Mayco Birch. But another favourite is Blue Hydrangea and Norse Blue over a base of Celadon Bloom.
