Those are great words, but unfortunately for so many people, you can't just tell them that they can or should change, they have to believe it. My wife has had a negative body image for at least as long as I've known her, 30 years. You can tell them until you are blue in the face but for some people, it has to be a fundamental change from within themselves. Maybe intense therapy can do it, maybe not.

Me too :( my 9 year old daughter just started experiencing these changes and she's so self conscious and hating her body and it devastates me so much because I know, that I myself, have had a huge influence on her by downing my postpartum body in front of her. I used to be 110lbs and a size 3 when bloated. I'm now closing in on 200lbs and a size 12, 3 kids later. So even at home she cant escape the constant stream of body image toxicity. So guess what? I decided it needed to start at home, the change in view. So, I explained to her that body's change even on a daily basis and her body is a powerful and beautiful machine that works hard daily so she can be and live a wonderful life.

@@Tangerineskies22 yeah, talking yourself down while your children are watching is really awful of course, but when you are doing it for so long, it becomes second nature. I'm from a family where all the women were chronically dieting and constantly talking bad about themselves, and although they can't really do anything about it, it fucked me up. Even stuff like: 'oh your body is so nice at this age', that is meant as a compliment reduces women and morality to their bodies. It's great to hear that you're making changes!! I never had an issue with my body …but time takes it’s toll & some sizes larger than in my 40s, scarred from several operations I found I was starting to fixate on the negatives. Then….my local art class was short of a life model, & I just thought “I need to do this & get over myself” So at 63 I bared all, yayas out, the full monte….& it worked! Artists like drawing curves & scars can be a “creative hook”…it was fascinating watching the different interpretations of my “house”….& they were…beautiful! The next term…I was behind the easel…the start of my arts adventure which 4 years on I am loving! Stephen is right…everyone has their own beauty….if we can’t see it, we’re not really looking!

I love Emma Thompson as an actress, but she seems to be a smart, emotionally intelligent, kind human too. Bravo Missy, BRA-VO! She made me tear up. As a 53 year old woman, it becomes more and more clear as I age that women are dealt an impossible hand and I am not going to accept that restriction society has put upon me any longer. Now, my braveness about living against that narrative evolves as I age, but ladies, here's the real truth. As you get older, you will look back at yourself at age 18, 28, 38 and so on and think: Man, I was really beautiful back then. And then you realize your 73 year old self would be telling you at 53, "Flaunt what you got, because it's good and it doesn't get any better."

I'm in my thirties and I had a conversation last year where the people around me were saying that a woman we saw on instagram in her 60's was acting too 'sexy' for her age. And then I asked a question 'why should we stop feeling or looking sexy as we get older ?'. Nobody replied. At first I felt that maybe I had asked a stupid question but I stand by it. Sexuality should be explored and lived no matter what age. There is no reason that it shouldn't except for the capitalistic ideas that only value youth and enforce that value so that we keep on buying things that are supposed to make us look and feel young. I hope that I'll still enjoy my body and sexuality the older I get even if things don't look the same as when I was younger. I hope that for all of us, especially women.

I had an epiphany one day when I was in high school. It suddenly penetrated my self-absorbed mind that every single classmate of mine was walking around worrying about being judged. And not a single one was really noticing me. Even bullies aren't really thinking of their victims, and most people aren't bullies; they're just people wandering the halls trying to be "good enough." *(I hasten to say that I haven't seen the movie and have no real-life opinion about what the scene looks like. I feel I don't have to, because I've had this conversation with myself, about what I look like to other people and how I affect them.) What Emma has done in that mirror scene is give a gift of acceptance to all the other people with bodies. Because nobody really feels theirs is good enough. But Emma showed us ourselves, symbolically, and allowed us to see that there's really nothing wrong with a real person's real body. If her character is a stand-in for us, then hopefully the lesson is that our body is not freakish to other people. It's, at worst, no big deal. For most of us, it's perfectly acceptable or even more-ish. And that knowledge should inform our behavior toward ourselves. It's okay to not be ashamed of yourself. It's okay to feel cute. It's okay to be happy.

Susan, my BFF from childhood, has struggled with anorexia her entire life. You're so right that the self hatred is very sad to see. And, how that self hatred diminishes their ability to be their best selves or enjoy life. Thank you for spending your career on the front lines caring for these women in need. I absolutely loved this movie! So many movies now being made about doddering seniors trying to fight aging and being forced into assisted living “resorts”. Or wildly going off the rails to recapture their youth. This was an honest heartfelt search to find one’s self and to come into feminine power. It was a now or never choice. “Leo” was amazing in showing his two sides of his personality. I felt very encouraged by this movie. Thanks for the lovely interview.

I honestly don't remember time when I was not worried/ashamed of my body. I know that my parents always commented on how much bigger I was than other kids. 35 yrs later, after bulimia and still affected by binge eating and after not taking a lot of opportunities b/c of my body, this is really nice to hear.

That yellow brings me straight back to September of my first year of high school. It’s a strong emotion. Motivates me to go see the movie. Also it was exactly at the cusp of adolescence that I also began hating my poor, perfect body. I blame Seventeen Magazine, for defining cellulite to me.
