lmao yeah. i remember me and my brother doing the whole mask salesman side quest and thinking, wait what would happen if we dont give him his money? we were fkng terrified when we saw his face XD
That's why I never minded games that are only half voiced. Bring in the VAs for the big flashy story moments, but the regular gameplay and talking with Girl in Town #37 is completely fine with just text
@@cheeseofglassmaybe, though it's implied, both through dialogue and apparel (look around his waist, at what he's wearing under his robe) that that's the same soldier who's posted in that room in the past, the poor sucker. Or perhaps not, he seems pretty content
I think what Dampe means by "do you know what kind of mask you're wearing" he is referring to the kind of creature it is representing. Those mummy creatures you see primarily in the future of castle town. And since those mummies are also in the royal tombs and he's the grounds keeper it'd make sense that he knows what those things are too.
@@Davian2073He's been hanging around in a graveyard - regardless of whether or not he *should* know about death and zombies, he almost certainly already does.
@@Davian2073Bomber kids entered the chat... they knew more about what was going on with the Moon than the adults because of thier access to the observatory. They also interacted with Skull Kid and ban Dekus because they thought he was one. Though it was a common trope in the 90s that kids would be the "only ones" taking a threat seriously because their imaginations allowed them to see things for what they were, while adults were usually forced to dismiss them as fairy tales and be completely blind to world ending events. That's what made being a kid playing these games so charming, back when everything wasn't SPELLED OUT like in modern games.
@@Leostar-Regalius yea if you look at their face it has a different wood-like texture compared to the rest of their body. I think putting masks on the dead is a burial tradition held in many civilizations across the world.
Burial masks are intriguing... They're found throughout history, across multiple lands. Ranging in materials from: wood, to stone, sometimes metal. And even, clay or porcelain.
I remember wearing all the masks and reaching Zelda just for her reactions. My favourite one was the Goron mask because it makes her laugh and say how it makes your head look big. I wish the game had more moments like that showing that the princess is still just a silly kid.
Burial Masks… Redeads wear them, Danpe is knowledgeable about them. I think that the burial masks were some kind of ancient ritual to send off the dead. Those masks were placed onto the corpses before being buried as some kind of ancient, Kakariko burial ritual. Danpe is unimpressed because he’s curious as to why someone alive would be wearing an ancient, burial mask. Why does RU-vid never let you post a single comment without an edit. It’s a personal goal at this point.
The HMS quest is so much more than a run-of-the-mill sidequest. Its a seemingly straightforward cycle of one customer to the next, but if you actually wear them around for the sake of it, you get to dig-up some pretty neat lore. Thinking about it, it's awesome that they made the next game revolve round the concept. It's ironic that when you wear a mask, not only does the world see you differently, but you start to see the world differently. Tangent: This holiday season, I dressed up as The Grinch for a community event. I'm just an average dude. But becoming such a beloved character, everyone flocked to me. I got hugs, people coming up to me for pics. For one priceless moment, I shed my adult woes and experienced the world the way it should be.
Yeah, I think they wanted to return to that with BoTW/ToTK. making the world feel more alive by having you talk to the various NPCs and see thier plights and tales. They react differently based on the outfits you're wearing and reveal interesting lore details that we used to assume wrong in the past. (though one thing we DO learn is Hyrulians are absolute cowards... but other species are completely fearless.)
As I've gone from being socially awkward to extremely likeable I have definitely noticed both, as well! You experience both the yin and the yang differently
you should play Persona 3 (the ps2 FES version, please. not the shitty remake that's missing the whole last chapter of the story). I promise you will love that story's themes and characters with what you just said about masks and how they change both your perception and the world's :)
Not quite. The transforming masks contain the sorrows and regrets of the person they're made from, allowing the person to pass on in peace, as seen with Darmani. Since the Song of Healing reverted it to mask form, it's likely he was able to move on even if his soul was completely trapped at first.
Unfortunately, This can't be the case, even though it really seems like it. According to the devs, Gerudo only give birth to pure Gerudo, so they must have been refering to a Hylian with red hair.
Ahh yes being predominantly female the gerudo take husbands of many colors but their genes are so strong that they will completely override any of the fathers genes and look purely gerudo.
@@greyson435 what do you mean ? I've known this since I was a child lol malon is the only one who ages in game besides zelda, link, & ruto Simply wear the mask of truth and talk to the stones ☺️
"Hey kid, just wondering, have you ever been haunted by an evil spirit? No? Okay, cool. Oh, by the way, you wanna buy this awesome mask that has nothing to do with why I asked you that question for 30 rupees?"
@@TBrizzle01 A mummified Hylean. Redeads were created by the Sheikah using political enemies as early experiments in immortality. The semi-failed experiments guard tombs and other important (but usually long forgotten) locations. By the time of Wind Waker the Sheikah had started experimenting on their own people which is why they look so different and have Sheikah tattoos. By Breath of the Wild the process is perfected as shown by the mummy at the end of each shrine. Someone on RU-vid (maybe Zeltik) did a wonderful documentary on all this.
@@matthew8153 also considering they were just in a civil war before the events of Oot and the redeads look like very tall hylians... the political enemies were probably gerudo. Maybe that's what pissed ganondorf off 🤷♂️
@matthew8153 ...was it actually a documentary tho or was it just Zeltik stitching together theories? No hate but that all sounds way too complicated and mature for a Nintendo 1st party game...
@@PointsofDatapretty sure that’s all just theories. Also Tears of the Kingdom’s story basically confirms that both it and Breath of the Wild’s stories are not connected to previous games in any way.
I love the idea of Link giving it to the graveyard kid. Like he too is a kid who doesn't think it fucked up enough to not to pass it to another kid lmao
Are you sure you aren't getting the kid confused with the Carpenter's son / Anju's brother? Because the kid and the Carpenter's son aren't the same characters.
It reminds me of how the Deku's on stage react to the different masks. I love how when you show them the mask of truth, they point blank say "That's the ugliest max ever... please take this and never wear that again..." They also attack the bunny hood, but that may be because rabbits eat plants and they see you as a threat.
Forest temple music from OOT is top tier gaming music especially in tone setting and matching the area it’s played in. Also it’s just one of my favorites from any game.
The Spooky Mask being carved from a plank taken from a coffin can't confirm that people die in Zelda, because it was already confirmed by stuff that isn't obscurely hidden like that. For example: the ghosts of the composers Sharp and Flat, the mere existence of the Graveyard at all, the specific existence of the Royal Family's Tomb, the guard you can find in the back alley of the Market after Ganondorf attacks Hyrule Castle but before getting the Master Sword, who actually dies in front of you if you talk to him.
I think that’s kinda a part of it, the kid doesn’t care where it came from because he’s after the, for lack of a better word, aesthetic of Dampe, just feels like that’s his personality.
Wow! I’m amazed that my favourite and most played game of all time still has some secrets I did not know about! I have been loving this series of shorts 🙌
ReDeads also wear these masks which means we can infer that the mask is likely some kind of burial mask. Though possibly an outdated one, since (with the exception of the ones in the Castle Town Ruins) we only see ReDeads in long abandoned tombs or temples, meaning they are presumably very old corpses that have reanimated. If the mask is old and outdated that would also explain why Dampe, the gravedigger, is the only one who actually knows it's a burial mask, while other Hylian adults don't seem to take any particular notice of that fact.
The side character lore in Ocarina of Time really added intrigue to the world. I'm loving TOTK and its side characters BUT not much of the side character lore adds much intrigue to the world and overall lore. I think TOTK missed a great opportunity in not enhancing the main story through more side character lore.
*Effigy:* (noun). A burial mask. “It took a decade or two to realize the Redead had an *_effigy_* stuck to its face. I thought it was just had a beef jerky face.”
According to one of the devs in a Japanese magazine, he became a Stalfos when he entered Lost Woods searching for his missing and certainly dead father (which is the soldier guarding Death Mountain)
@@dimlylit3086Presuming he was, in my headcanon he opened his shop in Hyrule Castle Town , to front as a spy and insider for Ganondorf, prior to his invasion of Hyrule Castle. In MM he would have left for Termina as Ganondorf was captured by the Royal guard, as per TP’s backstory, meaning the invasion never took place. I say all this because he is thought to appear in the lineup of The Demon Tribe in the SS Prologue.
@@ausgamecollector Honestly kind of a wild theory but yeah, I see it working. Also, my dumb self thought of Dante from DMC when you said Royal Guard lol.
*PLOT TWIST:* The weirdo graveyard kid knew exactly where the mask came from because he _made_ it, and he doesn't buy it from Link-the rupees are a reward for _returning_ it!
Let's face it that kid idolizes Dampe. He's not all there. And he is a little creepy. I think knowing that the mask was made out of a coffin plank would have made him want it even more
I’m currently playing ocarina of time for the first time and Im in Jabu Jabus stomach so I was just introduced to the laboratory guy. This game in particular gets pretty dark. Fucking rad.
I've been binging OoT related content for a few hours now, and part of the fun is silently daring people to show something I've never seen before in the game. I am a little shocked and extremely delighted to say that THIS IS NEW TO ME! I never knew this bit of lore about the mask!
That's the whole point. He contracts you to sell it for him. If you fail to sell it, though, you can give it back with no fee, so it's only similar to borrowing.
I don't remember if it was that mask, but if you take it to the Forest Stages in lost woods wearing that mask. They'll immediately become hostile and attack you (Edit) i went to confirm that its actually the skull mask. After you get the deku nut upgrade once with the skull mask. If you go back there with the skull mask again. That is when they will attack
This is probably the first "fun fact" video about OOT that's actually taught me something new in like 5 years, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I hate what it taught me.
It’s pretty neat seeing so many people enjoy something I cherished as a kid. The only mystery that bugs me to this day is beating the running man after he gets the bunny hood mask.
