Top Fuel dragsters are the quickest accelerating racing cars in the world and the fastest sanctioned category of drag racing, with the fastest competitors reaching speeds of 335 miles per hour (539 km/h) and finishing the 1,000 foot (305 m) runs in 3.62 seconds.
A top fuel dragster accelerates from a standstill to 100 mph (160 km/h) in as little as 0.8 seconds (less than one third the time required by a production Porsche 911 Turbo to reach 60 mph (100 km/h))[1] and can exceed 280 mph (450 km/h) in just 660 feet (200 m). This subjects the driver to an average acceleration of about 4.0 g0 (39 m/s2) over the duration of the race and with a peak of over 5.6 g0 (55 m/s2).
Because of the speeds, this class exclusively races to only a 1,000 foot (305 m) distance, and not the traditional 1,320 feet (400 m). The rule was changed in 2008 by the National Hot Rod Association following the fatal crash of Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta during a qualifying session at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, USA. The shortening of the distance was used in the FIA at some tracks, and as of 2012 is now the standard Top Fuel distance by the FIA. The International Hot Rod Association, which now sanctions Top Fuel in Australia, dropped the distance in September 2017 after Santo Rapisarda, a car owner who often runs NHRA races in the United States, pushed for the change. In recent years, only exhibition races in Martin, Michigan's US 131 Motorsports Park are run as Top Fuel races to the quarter mile.
Don Prudhomme (born April 6, 1941, San Fernando, California), nicknamed "The Snake", is an American drag racer.
He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1991
Prudhomme crewed for "TV Tommy" Ivo on Ivo's twin-engined slingshot in 1960.[2]
In 1962, Prudhomme was a partner in the Greer-Black-Prudhomme fuel digger, which earned the best win record in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) history,[3] before switching to Funny Car. He would win the NHRA FC championship four times in his 35-year career. He earned the nickname "The Snake" in high school. He was the first Funny Car driver to exceed 250 mph (400 km/h).[citation needed]
After trouble getting the "vaunted" Gilmore Engineering-chassied Donovan Engineering Special dragster sorted out, Tom McEwen quit, and was replaced by Prudhomme, then owner-driver in the B&M Tork Master-sponsored car.[4]
In 1965, Prudhomme faced Hot Wheels teammate McEwen at the Hot Rod Magazine Championship Drag Races, held at Riverside, "one of the most significant drag racing events" of that era;[5] ultimately, Top Fuel Eliminator (TFE) went to Jim Warren.[6]
He raced a Shelby Super Snake in the 1968 and 1969 seasons, powered by a Ford engine instead of the ubiquitous Chrysler Hemi. When Ford discontinued the program, Prudhomme went into the "Snake and Mongoo$e" phase of his career.[7]
Prudhomme was known for his yellow 1970 Plymouth Barracuda in which he match raced Tom McEwen in his red 1970 Plymouth Duster, named Mongoose. Both drivers gained wider public attention from Mattel's "Hot Wheels" toy versions of the cars, released in 1970. Hot Wheels celebrated their 35th anniversary in 2005 with a two-day event.
He retired in 1994 to manage his own racing team. With driver Larry Dixon, Prudhomme's team won the Top Fuel[clarification needed] championship in 2002 and 2003. In 2009, Dixon signed to drive the Al-Anabi Top Fuel Dragster, and Spencer Massey took over Prudhomme's car. At the end of the 2009 racing season, sponsorship went away and Prudhomme retired from active racing. In 2019 Don Prudomme currently sponsors and built the Montana Brand / John Force Racing Top fuel dragster driven by Austin Prock in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series

I can't tell you how much I really appreciate your taking the time to do these videos. I'm a retired Marine that was in Iraq and Afghanistan and building models has really been the only thing that has helped with the mental and physical issues that some come back with so Thank you very much.

This kit is basically the Young American dragster reissue kit. It even has the "too big" body fit issue under the engine! Notice how its scraping the ground? To builders....if you have the headers from the Don Garlits rear engine kit, they look way more accurate than these units in this kit. There's also a 1/16 scale version from Revell thats been around for years too. Nice video's!! Its nice to be able to see what comes in the kit.

I just completed my 1st ever rail car. Oh what a pain in the arse ! The model is the very original MPC JAWBREAKER 40 years old. When I was 26 I managed a place called Allied hobbies in Langhorne Pennsylvania and models would come back missing parts ( CUZ THE CUSTOMERS LOST THE FRIGGIN PARTS !) we could not send back to our distributor so we ate it and they sat in our storeroom as junk. I finally bought them all up at cost. This kit was sitting on my shelf for 30 something years and I finally got the urge to build it. THANK GOD for Testors Aluminium plate in a can. I wish they would do most or all of their "metalizers" in rattle cans. It would be very helpful and convenient. As alway's,HPIGUY builds another masterpiece 😎👍🏎🚘🚙🚛🚚🛵🚖🚒☝️👍

What a neat kit. I remember building Snake's white Hot Wheels Top Fuel slingshot (the 1970 car) with my grandfather, in the mid 1980s. He let me apply the Keith Black Racing Engines decals... and my grandfather was the real Keith Black. Miss you, grandpa.

Great job . It's rainy days like this I would either build s model I had, or , my Mom would drive me to get one ! I always got a funnycar or dragster, and sometimes a WWII fighter or newer jet bomber. And I LOVED it ! Still do,but now it's for much gauge train layout .

The issue with it lining up is model design issue. There are a couple of the front engine dragsters and 2 of the older top fuel funny cars that have the same issue. It still looks AWESOME. Thank you for sharing as always. Remember that it's a hobby and it's suppose to be fun. Keep yourselves, family, and friends safe and healthy. Build on....

Quite the ecstatic kit. I am mesmerized by the subject. That is a long rail. Love those tires. To other kit builder's, chrome plate should be removed from mating surfaces UNLESS you do use CA glue. But, even then, it would be better removed. I have observed the "GEL" Super glue is a bit more wimpier bonding than standard CA glue. I guess the gel weakens it. Love the final reveal. Superb job.

The biggest issue with front engine dragsters wasn't really clutch explosions it was because of the threat of engine fires, you can imagine going 200 mph and you engulfed in flames which a lot of drivers experienced just that first hand. Either way it could be a really bad day when these things happen to a driver. 🤬

Gday Chris, awsome build. Im doing the Tom Mongoose McEwen's same era car. Kit is basically the same. Did you end up having to pull the diff centre back out to get the whole assemble into the chassis? I did lol

the reason that they went to the engine in the back is because some one had their engine blow up and darn near killed them so they desired to put theirs in the back and then the rest followed

Sadly this has to be one of the worst bodies MPC ever made for this chassis! It is so out scale for this chassis. But you did a great job without even knowing that!

I know you use rust-oleum on most of your models. How long do you let it dry before sanding or putting on decals.
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 4 года назад
24 hours or so, but I keep the shop dehumidified too. I don't sand, it's spray and pray. No time to sand and fiddle. Two days on average per kit. :)

That's nice. Not the type of kit I like, 'cuz I always end up breaking one of those fiddly little line/link parts of the structure. That's what happened on my ChiTown Hustler Charger funny car. Just for personnal knowledge, why the inside of the right front wheel is different from the one of the left front wheel?
@hpiguy

I don't really know but I'm sure someone will chime in. I'm just going to guess and say it's a reflector for the timing traps?

Model glue is only for bare plastic to bare plastic. Super glue works well for painted and chromed parts.
