Joe Louis was Marciano's hero. When he knocked him out, he felt absolutely sick about it. He went to Joe's dressing room after the fight and said how sorry he was, and then started to say if it had been 10 years earlier it would have been a very different outcome. Joe the cut him off and said "10 years ago it would have been one hell of a fight. Don't ever apologize for being good". Two of the classiest guys to ever hold the title.

Rocky had talent. Punching talent. All the training in the world can't give you that. You want your heroes to be perfect. Thanks to you tube I have a new hero- Joe Louis...Pay your taxes Joe. Rocky Marciano, tightwad God bless him. All champions should retire rich. The eye test, Rocky fails it. Short arms, unimpressive body. But don't judge this book by its cover. Heart.. But Ezzard Charles, Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore had heart too. They were all champions and that's huge. Oh yeah, that guy over there was the heavyweight champion of the world. Need not accomplish any thing else in life to be a success.

Marciano permanently retired guys he fought. Walcott was unconscious for 3 minutes in fight 1. Layne's front 4 teeth were sheered at the gum line. Cockell went from being a prospect heavyweight to a train wreck after the beating Marciano gave him. La Starza was a promising heavyweight until the second fight against Marciano. Joe Louis was beating all the top heavyweights until Marciano; retiring after a devastating knockout. Guys that stepped into the ring against Rocky Marciano were put on the canvas. Hardest puncher of all time? I'd say relative to his contemporaries he was. Anyone from 1965 and back would not have survived 15 rounds against Marciano. I mean to say any boxer of any era in their prime before 1965 wouldn't have lasted 15 rounds to beat Marciano. After 1966 when Ali started getting into his stride he'd have stood a chance. Rocky had brutal power and his conditioning was so far beyond anyone else he could afford to wear opponents down. Granite chin, one punch knockout power in both hands, ultimate stamina, extremely unorthodox boxing style and determination like no other. The difference in power between Rocky and any heavyweight from 1965 or earlier was much greater than Foreman/Shavers vs their contemporaries. Not to say Rocky punched harder than Foreman or Shavers, but the difference between Rocky and his contemporaries was greater. Go take a look into the guys Rocky fought before you call them all bums. Rex Layne was 34-1-2 when he faced Rocky. His career slid terribly after that fight. Don Cockell was 69-10-1 running on a 10 win streak including 3 wins over Harry Mathews, a win over Tommy Farr and a win over Roland La Starza. Ezzard Charles was 85-10 going into Rocky I. After Rocky II he won 10 of 23 fights. Harry Mathews, who was only 10 months older despite debuting 10 years earlier, was 81-3 going into Rocky. That's all.

Cockell a prospect? He was a fat light heavy who was knocked out by former middleweight, Randy Turpin. Louis was beating all the top heavyweights? Are you insane? He was tired and started to look bad, so he retired. He was forced to come back to fight, due to tax problems. He no longer had his trainer, and did his training at home. In his first fight back, he was soundly beaten by former light heavy, Charles. All the best fighters he beat, were old and had many defeats already. Louis didn't have many defeats but I explained his circumstances already. Marciano fought mostly bums. Ted lowry beat him in their first fight(google it) Lastarza also beat him in their first fight. Lowry had 57 losses and still Marciano fought him. Just look at his opponents records and you will understand why he was undefeated. It is no big accomplishment being unbeaten, when you fight bums, who everyone else could also beat.

Middleweight ends at 160, Marciano never weighed less than 184 and a quarter pounds in the ring. Light Heavyweight stops at 175 too big for that division also, no Cruiserweight in those days, so Rocky was an average size Heavyweight for the times, a little short, and a tiny reach, but that was all that was small on Rocky. They say he had small hands, I say they were huge. If you don't believe me, look at the picture of him standing next to Dempsey comparing fists, Rockys fists dwarfed Jack's. For Heavyweights I have Rocky at no1 and Dempsey at no 3, with Louis in the middle, and Ali at no 4 and then Tyson to round off the top 5...

The Brockton Blockbuster fought 49 fights in 7 years as a pro. This averages out to about 7 pro fights a year and a fight every 2 months for 7 years straight. He basically didn't stop training for 7 years straight. His stamina was unmatched. He could throw punches non stop and sometimes they were harder punches in the later rounds than in the first round. It is all subjective opinions and everyone has their favorite boxer(s) and thinks they are the greatest but Rocky Marciano was definitely one of the greatest for sure.

I love dons comment at the end. "How come Marciano couldn't beat him, cause he's a white guy?".... and I believe that is the elephant in the room when people rate him. Him being white I think is a huge factor when they talk about him fighting ali, or any other great heavyweight. People are very ignorant to Marciano and his greatness. Hardest hitting and most conditioned fighter of all time. Undefeated in 49 fights with 43 knockouts. How could you dare to underrate him. Anyone that fights him is in for one hell of a night. A couple things about Marciano. First off, his level of conditioning was off the chart. Running was what he mainly did for training. An eight mile daily run was typical for him. Consequently, that gave him amazing endurance and made his legs stronger. If you watch his fights, he never got tired or slowed down. He always maintained the same tempo. He also fought from a crouched stance, mainly to compensate for having such a short reach. That made him harder to hit for a lot of fighters, but it also put him in a position to be able to generate truly wicked power in his punches.

@@chicagomike4587 Marciano's handlers took very good care of Rocky Marciano who was a true hero to all ItalianAamerican Boxing Fans during the late 40s till the mid-50s when he fought Archie "Old Mongoose" Moorer & even Irish grunts like myself who had to put insane interval & long distance training to excell in Track & Field at the half mile & the mile during the 1970s in Southern California where we began training twice a day and averaging 80-90 miles per week as freshman High School runner in Cross Country and in our respective running events. By the time we were seniors we were running 3 times per day and averaging between 140-200 miles per week. I was able to break 9 minutes in the 2 mile run and i just missed breaking the 4 minute mile at the state championships when i ran a 4:02 mile. Marciano's stamina training has never been matched. He would throw 80 -100 punches per round and even in the 15th round he would still be throwing 80-100 punches. Rocky was a complete animal who refused to lose.

I think he right on about Marciano beating the Klits brothers had they fought in Marcianos era. Why because they had 15 round limit, the gloves with feathers and got heavy. Plus the refs didn't break the fighters apart and let them fight out of the clutches. You could hit low, rabbit punch, so Marciano would have made a brawl out of the fight.He would have wore them both down and knocked them out.
@unbornbum3700
@unbornbum3700 7 лет назад
Please. I'm not Klitscko fan-boy but if Marciano was around today at 5ft9 and 185lbs he'd be fighting at LIGHT heavyweight, where i believe he would be beaten by the elite light-heavys such as Andrey Ward and Sergey Kovelev, It doesn't matter how tough you are, how strong you are or how much stamina you have, when you're fighting somebody who is technically far superior then you.. You're gonna get outboxed. The thought of Marciano even getting in the ring with Wladimir Klitscko at 6ft6 and 247lbs of lean muscle is ridiculous, the fought of marciano actually winning the fight is even more ridiculous. Klitscko is a FAR superior technician to Marciano, olympic gold medalist, over 100 wins as an amateur only a handful of losses, 63 wins as a pro, 53 kos, kos against genuine heavyweights, not the 170pounders rocky was fighting, 24 title defences, Only outboxed once in his entire pro career, and that was when he was 39 years old. As well as being a far superior technical boxer then rocky he was also around 60lbs heavier, 9 inches taller and had a 12 inch reach advantage. Rocky would be brutally knocked out, and knocked out early. Klitscko would lift him off the floor. Very few all time greats would stand a chance against a prime klitscko because of his size, skill and style of fighting. lennox lewis was the same, a big heavy power puncher with an elite jab and world class technical boxing skills.

A ton of respect to Tru School Sports for interviewing Don Turner and posting the video. Seriously, it's shocking how few Don Turner interviews there are on the internet. I mean, this guy has spent his entire life in boxing, and he even fought in the 1950s and 1960s -- FFS, he even sparred with Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest boxer ever to live!! Having actually fought in arguably the toughest era, and been around the greatest trainers and boxers in history, to then training the legends like Larry Holmes and Evander Holyfield, Don Turner really should be considered boxing royalty! He's probably the last remaining trainer who truly knows old school training methods and old school fighter's mentality. His knowledge must be off the top end of the charts. I really hope you guys get the chance to interview the man again, in the near future. Take care and God bless.

The Rock was in his own way as much of a genetic freak as Ali. In his conditioning, indestructiblity, unbreakable will etc. Had he fought Ali both in their prime under early 50s rules he might have beaten Ali's torso, arms etc so badly Ali couldn't guard himself, & move well by the late rounds,possibly way behind on points,Marciano knocked him out in the late rounds. However, very likely had Ali won the Absolute War on cuts,TKO, points etc. The rematch (which Ali wouldn't want to give him, think about it) Marciano would handily win, because he would've permanently damaged Ali in the 1st fight. Like Turner said, people just don't realize the entity of destruction Marciano was in the ring, he ruined potentially great fighters like no fighter's done before or since.

A prime Ali from 1965-1967, is too fast for Marciano. Rocky never fought against a Boxer 6'3" with a 80" reach and 14"fist size and someone who had quicker handspeed than Sugar Ray Robinson. In 1966, Ali landed 15 punches on Brian Londen in 2.8 seconds. In Ali's fight against Cleveland Williams, he was only hit 5 times in their entire fight. That was the GOAT defensive performance by a Heavyweight Boxer. Nobody can beat that Ali.

@@richardmilliken8705 Obviously you read what I wrote. A prime Ali "probably" beats anybody. What I was saying was he never ran into a (seemingly) inhumanely conditioned, indestructible fighting machine like RM. Who's he's not going to actually "hurt", with the Ref aware RM's not truly beat till he's dead, it's Possible Ali's arms and body are so battered RM drives a sledgehammer through in the last seconds and gets the KO.

@@discernment8963 Ezzard Charles was 33 years old the 1st time he fought against Rocky for the Heavyweight Title. That was a very close fight that went the full distance of 15 rounds. Marciano won by a unanimous decision. We hear all this talk about Rocky hitting his opponents in the 15th round as hard as he hit them in the 1st round. Rocky only fought a 15 round Boxing Match one time (against a 33 year old Charles who was in the early stages of ALS). Rocky's next longest fight was against Walcott, where he was losing badly for the first 12 rounds before he knocked Walcott out in the 13th round. Rocky didn't come close to breaking Walcott's or Charle's bones, tendons, & ligaments. But in Rocky's rematch against Charles, he had his nose split in half and Charles caused a 1 inch deep cut above Rocky's left eye, and as a result, Marciano was bleeding like crazy & the ring Doctor examined him, and allowed Rocky to fight 1 more round, in which he knocked Charles out. And the 2nd time that he fought LaStarza, the fight went 11 rounds, before he TKO'd him. And LaStarza is the only Boxer that i know of, that Rocky broke bones, tendons and blood vessels, and as a result, he struggled to keep his arms up to block Marciano's punches. Rocky had 8 fights where he went at least 10 rounds, while Ali had 29 fights where he went at least 10 rounds. And Ali had 12 fights where he went 15 rounds. So Ali has more than proved his incredible stamina in the Boxing Ring. Prime Ali was better conditioned than Marciano & at least twice as fast with his hand & foot speed as well as his lightening quick reflexes. Marciano admitted that he couldn't do the Ali shuffle for 1 round nevermind 15 rounds. Marciano was a slow flat-footed Boxer that missed at least 60 % of his punches. Unlike a prime Dempsey, Louis, Liston, Ali, Foreman, Holmes and Tyson who were all extremely accurate punchers. I believe that Liston, Foreman, Shavers, Lyle, Wilder, Lewis and Baer all hit harder than Marciano. Ali faced the 3 hardest punchers of all-time, Liston, Foreman & Shavers and they were unable to knock him down. If Ali was able to KO Foreman with combination punches, then he could do the same thing to Rocky. Marciano never fought against a young & top ranked Heavyweight Fighter in their prime who weighed at least 210lb. Marciano would have been more evenly matched against Frazier or Dempsey.

Great fighter but that's overdoing it a bit. You dont go undefeated and not be a great but noone would try to argue Marciano was the greatest ever. Not anyone who knew what they were talking about. He gets even further down the list if you go pound4pound. He easily cracks top 10 heavyweights on his undefeated/k.o record. Louis was older than Rocky but was 4 inches taller had an 8 inch reach advantage and 25 lbs on him. You wouldnt see that today. Rocky was most often quite a bit smaller with very short arms. Give the man credit he essentially a cruiserweight fighting heavyweights and knocking them out with ever being stopped or defeated himself. That gets him top ten status on it's own and pretty high up on pound4pound list, not many fighters could give up so much weight, height and reach and go undefeated while compiling 43 knockouts in 49 fights.

I'm not saying I th I k he would have beaten rocky in his prime because I don't know but that record cant be denied. Plus the 3 losses Louise had was out of 69 fights. He didn't even mention how Marciano bursts blood vessels in his opponent's arms and sheared teeth off at the nubs

The stupid laughter of the young interviewer only highlights his ignorance . Marciano could take punishment on a scale that no other fighter ever could . He was made of granite . He could take out any fighter with either hand , and once he landed his Suzie Q right hand , it was lights out . They stayed knocked out . I have Marciano at number 5 in my all time greatest heavyweights , behind 1 ) Ali 2 ) Joe Louis , 3 ) George Foreman , 4 ) Larry Holmes .

Much as I respect Don Turner and love Marciano, I can't help thinking that nostalgia is playing a part in his comparison.

he could throw that power all night too. over 15 rounds no one could hang with him. hes one of the greatest fighters who ever lived. had a toughness about him like Dempsey. they were all hard men back in those days, straight out of the second world war

Sometimes an older fighter is better than all the younger ones. George Foreman was heavyweight world champion when he was 45 and beat Moorer who was 26. These “old” guys Marciano fought were mostly on winning streaks and were the best and toughest fighters around and that was an era of great fighters compared to today. He fought the very best of his time and the very best at the time. Bernard Hopkins was light heavyweight champion of the world at age 48. Archie Moore was the world light heavyweight champion until he was 46.

Awesome! Tyson, Dempsey, Frazier, Marciano. Would love to see these brothers go round robin.

One more reason to love Don Turner. Brutally honest and isn't afraid to speak his mind.

I think people make too much of Marciano's relatively small size. The man could hit plus he had huge reserves of determination. Holyfield shows us that size isn't such an issue if you have determination - even against fairly chunky guys like Foreman, Tyson and Bowe. I think a Marciano v Tyson fight would be incredible. The winner by knockout....

He was a light heavyweight and fought an aging Joe Louis. Against Tyson he would not have lasted even one round.

To anyone disagreeing with Don Turner I would say, okay which fighter have you trained to beat a Mike Tyson in his prime, against 12 to 1 odds ? And who have you developed to a level of the Klitschko brothers ? Come and tell me your opinion after you've done that. 😅

Joe Louis was on an 8 wins in a row, against top heavyweight fighters, winning streak, Rocky knocked him clean out of the ring ! 😳 😲

He would have smashed Tyson to bits. Marciano might have got knocked down in the early rounds like he did in his first fight with Walcott but even if that had happened he'd have come back and proceeded to batter Tyson into submission for the rest of the fight just like he did with every other fighter he fought as a pro.

Can't trust Don Turner. Rocky had his first pro fight at 23 not 25, look it up. And he never trained the Klitschko's! Don also said Rocky could KO both Klitschko brothers (who controlled Super Heavyweight boxing for 20 YEARS) at the same time, yet 185 lb Rocky with his tiny penguin dwarfism arms could not finish skinny little 185 lb Charles in 15 rounds.

People say he fought nobody’s. Maybe, but he defended the title from the #1 contender every time. Not the second, the fifth, the 20th. He only defended the title from the first ranked contender every time. He only fought the best of his time, whoever they were. Nothing else a man can do

At the very end, when Don Turner says, "You think that Marciano couldn't be him because he was a white guy?"....that was the explicit verbalization of what a lot of people think but wouldn't say.

Rocky was certainly the best 180 lb. puncher ever. His right cross could come from any angle. He never took a round off and wore his opponents down with body shots and constant pressure. He understood tactics and strategy better than his corner did.

I think saying 180lbs acts like he was only good fighting 180lbs guys. But this isn't true rocky came in 186lbs against 200lb guys and came in 186lbs against a 254lbs guy, knocked that guy out in round 1 as well. He was 186lbs because that was best weight for kinetic energy with his body and the best weight for stamina.

Rocky beat Charles (2), Louis, Walcott, Moore and was never really hurt by any of them. Think about it. This is a list of all-time greats. Think about it. People say Louis was old, but he was 37, not ancient, and was on an eight fight winning streak. Rocky had been fighting a couple years. And he did not decision Joe, he knocked the hell out of him.

People who discredit marciano have no clue what they are talking about. He was a machine. You could name a bunch of people that he KNOCKED OUT that are all time greats. Only heavyweight champ to retire unbeaten. Beat everyone available. 93 percent knockout rating. Case closed. He was a great fighter and could fight anyone. Nobody especially today would be able to have an easy fight with him. No one. End of story

I just recently started watching Rockys fights on RU-vid. I always thought he had to be a great white hype, and I'm a white guy with an Italian last name. Maaan, I'm glad I finally found videos of him boxing. He was legendary, for sure. Not many people could hit that switch to be someone different when competing. I'm in the Philly area and a huge Brian Dawkins fan. That level of competitiveness was something they both had in common. A gentleman in public, but a beast in the arena. A rare trait for sure.
