A sample from "Bluegrass Banjo Don Reno Style" available as an instant download here: leapingbrain.com/modshop/chec...
The legendary Don Reno is revered in American bluegrass history for his improvisational flair, technical skills and good-humored personality. The Reno banjo style he created melds traditional bluegrass breakdowns with chord-based solos, percussive techniques and flamboyant single-string runs. Don taught his groundbreaking banjo techniques to his son, Don Wayne Reno, who now passes it on -- with lots of his dad's great advice -- to all aspiring players.Don Wayne's warm, relaxed and very thorough analysis of some of the most requested Reno tunes will help you master the distinctive features of this marvelous style. His banjo lesson is like sitting down to learn a few tunes with an old friend as he guides you through the rolls, brush techniques, walk-downs and chord melodies that give Reno-style banjo its trademark sound. He even covers some fascinating back-up rhythm techniques, along with up-the-neck chord shapes and progrssions, tricks such as "the double roll" and the "snare drum sound," and more. With his brother Dale on back-up guitar, Don Wayne teaches eight classic Reno songs: "Dixie Breakdown," "Banjo Signal," "Follow The Leader," "Double Banjo Blues," "Little Rock Getaway," "5 By 8," "Cumberland Gap" and the kick-offs to "I Know You're Married (But I Love You Still)" and "I'm The Talk Of The Town."The two Reno Brothers end this lesson with a great performance of "Charlotte Breakdown." He teaches this lesson on the famous 1934 Gibson Mastertone RB 3 Flathead with Flying Eagle inlay that his father received as a trade from Earl Scruggs in 1948. Don Reno played it on "Feuding Banjos" (precursor for "Dueling Banjos") and on all the great Reno and Smiley recordings. You won't find a Reno-style banjo lesson like this anywhere else! Reviews:"If you would like to learn some songs and licks by one of the most creative minds ever to tackle the 5-string, this video provides an opportunity like no other. My compliments to Don Wayne, Homespun Tapes, and of course, Don Reno." -- Banjo Newsletter"This video is highly recommended to all fans of Don Reno or the Reno Brothers, plus anyone who wants to be a better banjo player. There is a lot of detailed information that can be digested in small bites. There is enough here to allow the intermediate to advanced player to gain a solid understanding of Don Reno's banjo style." -- Bluegrass Unlimited.

Scruggs, Reno and Stanley are the pioneers who shaped the sound of bluegrass banjo. Don Wayne is doing a super fine job of keeping his dad's tradition alive and well. Don Reno is one of my all-time favorites because he had the ability to make his slow solos as ear-catching as his fast ones.

Yeah, I’d love to see Don Reno and Ralph Stanley grouped with Scruggs as equals.

These two guys are in Hayseed Dixie these days. I have been lucky enough to meet them a couple of times now. Genuinely nice guys and awesomely talented.

Had the honour of meeting both brothers at Hayseed Dixie concerts a few times - couldn't have been finer musicians or better people. I told Don Wayne I had just bought my first banjo and he smiled, shook my hand and told me to 'keep at it'. I did, though I started late and will never live long enough to match his - or his brother's - skill.

Just recently had a young banjo player tell me that he thought Reno Style banjo sounded 'amateur'. I chose not to light into him at that moment. He is a Scruggs only guy. Nothing wrong with Scruggs.I like it all.But to make a dumb statement like that needs correcting. I think most guys that so harshly judge Reno Style, do so because they can't play a note of it!! JMO!!

Banjo players are strange. I've never seen a group of musicians more hellbent on copying one musician, not to mention more hellbent on bashing other musicians who did their own thing. I came from woodwind land before picking up the banjo, and that mentality would be considered a huge detriment. The more I know about other amateur banjo players, the more I want to avoid them.

My favorite banjo break of all time is Don Reno on "All i have is Just a Memory". The way that the man handles pauses and timing in this is worthy of a classical composer. Don Wayne, you are astute, i haven't heard you live but i hope you have heard what i am talking about

I was born in 1947 in Roanoke, Va and every Mon thru Fri morning for years Don played on local TV with Red. I got to go down there some and Don was a real nice man and great player. Once he said the reason his style was kinda unusual was when he got out of the Army, Earl was sounding so great with what Don picked up from S.Jinkens that he decided to do two finger and other licks more than the three finger roll so he would have his own style and it worked. Is that what Don told others too?

That RB-75 has got some power hidden in there I'll tell you. When Don Wayne hits the tag or a pinch, that thing will hurt your ears!

Yeah..I read that a while back and actually talked to charlie about that whole deal. He said that banjo had a sound of it's own and he's never had another one to sound like that. I definatly believe that! It's a beast! Earl and Don wouldn't have owned it otherwise.

Man Don ran a tight head! He says he ran it at about a B flat...I believe it..Listen to it pop and how loud it is. Look at how much pic overhang he has on his fingers.

The double-scratchplate acoustic guitar that Dale is playing here looks just like his dad's old partner Bill Harrell's guitar. I wonder if it is.

Sorry, I have since posting this question discovered that it is in fact an RB3.

Nah, its the original neck of the pre-war RB3 owned by Don Reno, you can tell because part of the 5th fret inlay is missing.

Sorry but Don Reno is too far ahead of the competition for them to even try to foot race. This song proves it, & i treasure my old recording of it. Don was the best soloist. I am thinking about that that incredible break he did on All I Have is Just a Memory! Pure magic!
