I think a genious cant realize what he does is a genious thing, and Fagen act like he knows he is another kinda human, just like Joao Gilberto. So i think Fagen is just AMAZING haha
@ LadySoul502 and in hope that in some metaphysical after existence we can both enjoy the musical resonance of the masters for part of eternity. Cheers!
Congrats Donald! Well deserved! I love your music and unique playing style and chord progressions! Nobody like you and your music crosses all boundaries. It is timeless and will never be put I a box! Tx for all the music I have so appreciated!
Saw them 6 times from 94 to 10.... and just saw the dukes...offered anyone free tickets and logding to go with me to ST Augustine for the next concert but got no takers....I still pray that the Dan music is greeting me when I get to heaven. But when you see perfection....is it ever enough?
I just finished reading Donald's book 'Imminent Hipsters.' What a witty guy and such a creative and talented musician! His writing made me chuckle more than a few times while reading his book.
Holy moley..... he's like, the greatest interpreter of the pulse of life to ever come along. I build a monument of respect to this guy, master storyteller and meticulous craftsman.
He was put here for a purpose and this is it. I was a 17 year old high school senior, straight ahead rock fan until I bought Can’t Buy a Thrill in ‘73, i have to admit strictly on the basis of the cover art. Whatever. Anyway as I got into this I heard totally unfamiliar chords and phrasing in a sort of rock like song. Those chords my god those chords, they struck right through me and added such a level of pleasant complexity. It was perfect, exactly what I’d been looking for but didn’t know I was looking for anything. 20 or so years later they started touring again, I went to the concert in The Woodlands. As we were getting to our seats the audio system started playing loud, and THOSE CHORDS!!! Shit! Then Larry Carlton’s chording on some song, I don’t remember which but I do still recall to this day the awesome power behind the it and loud as heck, to hear those sweet complex chords played in an outside amphitheater setting, well I had to choke back tears for 15 minutes. That’s how grateful I am to have experienced Becker/Fagen in my age of enlightenment. To this day, 50 years after the first album, when I play an SD album or song I have to stop whatever I am doing so I can close my eyes and give it the attention it deserves, in my case that means all of my attention. Thank God for SD and Becker/Fagen. Sorry for writing a book I couldn’t help it.
been a fan for decades, can only aspire to be close to this level of talent and creativity. To me the Dan, and Don represent the best of american music.
No body no one like Fagen Always sends me , music and lyrics ...Flew to NYC from MN in 1990 when I thought seeiong the NY Rock n Soul Show was my only chance in life to see him ! Little did I know I would see him and Walter many times thru the 90's and beyond....
You know something? We are really lucky to have that voice coming through to us. I undersand that nobody in the group felt they could sing, so Fagen was chosen as singer. What a moment in musical history!!
Fagen is on a differant level, when he puts out music you don't wonder if it's good you just knock someone down with the money and then enjoy it. People throw words around sometimes but the guy really a genius.
The older I get the more I appreciate your music and song subject matter/lyrics , Couldn't get my head around some of those lyrics back in the 70s ,but understand alot now, You and Walter just continued to amaze me ,thanks
I must say you nailed it ! The immortal music those guys made is off the chart . They told us they want to make music people will listen to after 100 years.
Oh me too! Love love love steely Dan. Both so gifted, smart, talented and nonconformist, bending the rules to accommodate their art the way they wanted to craft it, so much admiration. Plus Don is a sexy mfer. The big brain is irresistible.
Wow, what a nice, intimate take here with Donald Fagen, performing 'Florida Room.' It's a rare tune to see him do actually. Great that people have this.
On paper or live interview, Donald and Walter are two of the funniest men you will ever hear. As can be heard from Donald’s comments at the beginning. Delivery and timing is everything.
his voice wasnt that great in this performance BUT i do love the original track version (possibly my favorite track on his kamakiriad album) & yes, just as everyone else has said, steely dan is by far one the greatest & most underrated groups of all time. my favorite band :D congrats donald, u earned it!
Yep Every time they do Aja live , it's a trip ...Went to the Gorge out here in WA to see them once , really great . Also saw Donald solo in Minneapolis , finally got to hear him do The Goodbye Look ....The Nightfly continues to be a small miracle among a world of decent to mediocre music ...Good to hear from ya Dolly back Fade to Black ....JB
it was so great to see DONALD FAGEN HE WAS SO CARING MAKING SURE WE ENJOYING TO THE MAX BRAVO...the other night at the JOINT.... I have been in love w/ HIM for ever....FROM ROCKEN MUSE....ANNABELLA DE CORRO
Just great! What is it about Donald and Walter's music, arraignments and lyrics that takes me back, and leaves me there for a while. Even when i listen to their arrangements and productions of others' music, like Walters arraignments of Michael Franks Something there. Fantastic.
Just watching Fagen hammer those keys at this stage in his life, he's really reminiscent of Ray Charles. He's definitely got the aura of a Jazz great surrounding him as well. Peace to the Dan !
What a boss, never knew that about his mother. He has the knack for writing complete songs instead of just a handful parts that sound good. Always got that dry humor, too. Phil Woods.
It’s about me, but my paternal grandmother also sang in the Catskills. I wish I’d have had heard her. I went on to grow up and attend Juilliard do voice for two years. She never got to know.
