Fantastic point. And of course, the 2nd amendment is more archaic than the 14th (yes, the amendments are numbered in chronological order, well, the first 10 came at once).

Yes, the second amendment is an historical anomaly that really no longer has any logical application, but even when it was written it clearly did not mean anything close to what the “gun rights” (read “license to kill”) faction is pretending it meant. The “a well-armed militia being the best security of a free country” clause is completely ignored. It wasn’t this way until very recently. Heller in 2008 was the first federal ruling in the history of the United States that significantly restricted the rights of governments to regulate firearms.

Not disallowing him to run again, would once again be a moment that the constitution was not upheld by the justice system. And a sign of cowardice. I get what Kinzinger is saying, but the GOP would still try to keep rigging the voting system and gerrymandering districts, even if Trump lost again.

Yeah he says they'll heal by losing. What about all the losing they have already experienced and instead keep trying to rig elections, or gerrymander districts? They're not going to suddenly "heal" and do what's right. They will keep trying to do everything they can to make sure they win and after that never lose.

It's a scary thing that Republicans who have tried to do the right thing or stood up to the extremism in the party have been run out. We, the people, need to make a stand against extremism and authoritarianism within the current Republican Party. The Republicans have to lose and lose big for the party to realize it's been going down the wrong path. It saddens me to see the state its in right now. This country needs both Conservatives and Liberals working together for it to succeed into the future.

Don't look now, but the Democratic Party has been pretty conservative for a long time. The demise of the Republican Party would leave a conservative Party in power. What we need is a credible liberal Party to the left of the Democrats (Not the Green Party, which was last used by Russia to split the Democratic vote in Trump's favor. The electoral system does not supersede the law. This whole idea of “just defeat him at the ballot box” or “his supporters will just riot if he’s jailed” doesn’t work in a constitutional democracy. If Trump violated the Constitution he should not be eligible for reelection, full stop. Any social issues that arise thereof might be painful, but necessary.

The wonderful thing about the Colorado case--if it does end up barring Tr*mp from public office--is that sets precedent for kicking out a few senators (I'm looking at you, Josh Haulass), and more than a dozen representatives, plus quite a few in the judiciary and executive branch (bye-bye Justice Thomas and Postmaster General DeJoy).

I've met Trump over 50 times. I worked at the McDonalds on East 47th in Manhattan. He would order an obscene amount of food: 2 Big Macs, 2 fries, large shake and 2 Filet-O-Fish, regularly . I would ask him if it was all for him. He replied : " You bet, Honey. You're too pretty to work here. How old are you, Honey?" He's a creep. I was 15. He was in his 60's and looked obese. The age of consent in NYC was 17.

You said it, though. It’s because you’re Catholic. Many Catholic beliefs directly contradict far-right Evangelical political propaganda, so that’s what makes you different a minority. Issues where Catholics differ from Evangelicals are: -immigration -guns -the work ethic (pull yourself by your own bootstraps myth) -corporation rights vs individual rights -helping the poor -other forms of promoting equity considered “socialism” by the far-right -the death penalty and the prison system altogether As you can see, the only place where Catholics align with evangelicals politically are issues of abortion and anything deemed religious “freedom” (in quotation marks because it’s a vague term), with Catholics split in every direction about lgtbq protections

Oh, he’s still very much a conservative republican though. Don’t miss that point. I admire his strength in the moment to stand up and do what was right (and to admit that he missed opportunities earlier on and made mistakes). But being from Chicago, I also know his policies are still quite standard conservative policies (fortunately not the current type: wanting to do away with my nonbinary child craziness, but still not something I would want to vote for)

They are really conservative in terms of policy, look at their voting records. the good thing is that they can argue their positions on that in a meaningful way, in a way that I can say: I can see where your coming from and it’s not (intentionally) evil. I don’t believe in any of them on the right . Not Kinzinger or Haley or Chaney . I think they are clearly the lesser of all the evils and there may be some topics that could be compromised on with them to get things done and I’m willing to do that . Compromise is how a society works . I don’t however remember any position that I ever agreed with them on . ( I left Christie out ) But let’s not forget who they are either !

They fought hard for our democracy. They’re still fighting. I can’t forget, however, that they are both very Republican in their voting records, and they still represent what I can’t vote for. However, it’s immensely refreshing and heartening to see and hear truly patriotic representatives who are Republican and who care about our Constitution. We need many more like them in the Republican Party, so that we have two decent political parties to choose from.

I was hoping he would run for Senate. I am indifferent with both of my Senators. Duckworth and Durbin are fine. I don't hate them, but I don't love them either. Kinzinger would at least keep them honest.

I don’t often disagree with Adam Kinzinger, I think he is levelheaded, but I have to disagree with him that it would be better for Trump to loose at the polls. I do not for one minute believe that Trump will win in 2024 and be reelected president. However, if we are to honor and protect our constitution then trump should be prohibited to run on the presidential ticket. It’s time we have ethical leaders in both parties.

Each state runs their own election. So each state decides whether or not a person does or does not qualify. The Colorado suit was brought about by some voters rather than the Secretary of State making the decision. The SoS office stated they would abide by the court's decision whichever way it goes. It is a given whatever the decision the losing party will appeal.

He can still be a write-in candidate in any state that takes him off the ballet, deep red voters would just write him in. You can write in anyone you want, it's perfectly legal. Most write in votes mean you threw your vote away on some one that had no chance of winning.
