Since the earliest days of medicine, the complex study of human anatomy has been an integral part of health science training and research. For more than 60 years, the UCSF Willed Body Program has overseen the donation of bodies for medical education and research. Andrew Corson, director of the UCSF Willed Body Program, talks about the program, which is the largest such program in the state, receiving approximately 400 donated bodies a year. Cadavers donated to UCSF are supplied to a number of programs including UCSF's School of Medicine, School of Dentistry and School of Pharmacy, as well as the orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and physical therapy departments. Additionally, UCSF provides cadavers to other UC campuses and approximately 50 non-UC schools in Northern California, research groups and emergency medical education programs. Each entity must adhere to strict protocol guidelines, and each application is vetted by the UCSF Anatomical Material Review Committee.

My Mother passed in July of this year and donated her body to science back in 1977 after my Dad who passed that same year was asked to donate his body by his Doctor due to his rare heart condition. It's a selfless act of love to want to help others. RIP my angels. I love you so

Tara 907 I want to do what your grandmother did to donate my body to science. I'm already an organ donor, my next step is donor my body 🙏🏼. Some people have told me why I want to donate my body. I was a nurse for many years, and I know that medicine advances in giant steps, but they also need a little help. I would like them to study my body and could use it to detect diseases. It would be an act of love and not a madness like some people would think. Blessings for all

Marko Coric if you die at home, an autopsy is usually performed. If you die in hospital, it’s likely that an autopsy will be done, but not always, as they know why you died. Most people have an autopsy. My grandad died in hospital, still had an autopsy because of asbestosis. Autopsy isn’t just for murder victims.

Donating blood is good for us as we age. It removes the iron from your blood that a woman would lose every month through menstruation. This reduces your chances of having a heart attack. The extra iron in your blood post-menopause is why a woman's chance of a heart attack goes up and parallels men. Giving blood can save your life and a man's too.

@@anniewilliams9317 donating your body and organ donation is not the same thing. The thing on the driver license is just organ donation, not body donation. They do not put body donation on driver license. Donated organs can go to anybody that needs them, that's a match. Donating your body is very different. The donation is done to one specific place, it's used for medical research. Being a organ donor usually disqualifies you from being a body donor. But body donation and organ donation is two very different things. Body donation is not put on a driver license, that organ donation.

We registered at that time since its my understanding that they only take derelicts and pre-registered individuals. When I was a nursing school I had the opportunity to go to the Anatomy Gift Registry. At this location surgeons are given the chance to "practice" procedures. I am completely sold on both of the aforementioned programs. You won't need your body anymore. Why not allow your donation to provide education to medical staff!

Being both a medical professional and a patient who’s had 34 surgeries, removing all but 5% of my gastrointestinal tract due to Crohn’s/Colitis and three relapses of colon cancer, I am donating my body and it’s uniquely altered physiology with the hopes that it will help teach the next generation of doctors to be more familiar with my diseases and the extremely rare severity of my diseases (1% of 1% have happened what happened to me). I also pray they could use me to help find if not a cure, at least more effective treatment.

My advanced directive clearly indicates my desire for my body to be donated to science. There are several reasons why. One of which is that the cost of a traditional funeral can run well over $10,000. It's a billion-dollar industry. It is predatory on the vulnerable -- Which is objectively immoral. Another reason, is that whatever I have done in life, at least I can be of some value in death.

Donating your body to science is a very noble thing! I had a great-uncle that did that, but I had to deal with cadavers in medical school, and I just don't know if I want to have someone dissecting me -- it's a morbid thought. Not that it matters to the deceased, it can't; but it can be a very valuable tool for doctors to learn about the human body so they know how it works and how to best treat it. Without that ability for knowledge, things would be very different in life for everyone!

Bit different to leaving your body to science but here in Scotland there's a new law. Everybody that dies is an organ donor if any organs are suitable. Have to fill in a form to opt out ... if you don't want to be a donor.

@angelgirldebbiejo

My mom was donated to Science Care and also my brother in law. I thought it was a good thing but there are things they don't tell you, One they use the word "tissue" , like they will say , once we get whatever "tissue " we are using they will be cremated, what they mean by this is a lot of cadavers are sectioned into 6 parts, they sell those parts to Universities and also to Dr seminars, so they might order a torso with a head or no head , it's all so gross to me. Had I known that i would not of donated my mom to them, I thought i was doing something for science. I pictured how we did frogs in high school, like drs studying on them, not dismembering them. Also many of the places, I don't know if science care does this but they don't even use medical saws, they use chain saws which should be against the law. They say there is nothing that breaks the law. I looked this all up here on Google after one of my sisters told me the morbid stuff they do. SO when you get cremated remains, it's the parts they didn't sell or use, it's not the whole person.Also they can lease out the parts for years so your loved ones parts are floating around somewhere, maybe even rotting away somewhere, some it says have been found in medical cinerators. Also these places are for profit, Science care original owner made billions then sold it , now another guy owns it and runs it like a Mcdonald's he says. I think there should be a class action suit against them and everyone else that does this because if donors families knew their loved ones were going to be dismembered I am pretty sure they wouldn't sign up, at least 90% of them. I wouldn't of donated had i known that was what they meant by taking tissue. It should be against the law unless they come right out and tell the truth to the doner.

I am going to do it anyways. lol. Who gives a shit if they make jokes? Like really? If I can be somewhat entertaining and make people laugh as well. I'm all for it. I will be dead. Why would I care if I am dead? The advancement of science is better that worrying about a few nut heads in the class making jokes.

My 38 year old son is a homeless man by his own choice. He is not (life) insurable. Should he pass before me, I will most likely donate his body first, because at least in his death he will have contributed to Humanity and also, a funeral would take most of my savings. Unless he marries, I am his legal next of kin. This idea was presented to me by a caring friend who understood my dilemma should he pass.

Lady Jane. I will be donating my body to a body farm. After I’m going I’m just a memory to people and this body was only my earthly home. Therefore it can just go back to earth the way the Bible says and if something can be learned from this process even better. Maybe you could consider something like that?
