This historical tour de force concert confirms what a phenomenal singer and performer is the great Sondra. By far the greatest "dramatic coloratura" AND spinto of our times. The power and huge vocal and dramatic impact of her voice is a unique experience. I was planning to cross the Atlantic for the first time in many years to attend this concert, but finally was not able to do it ... but there are rumors that this concert might be planned in Europe in future ... We cross fingers ;)

Her voice sounds so much more beautiful when its ample sound can project through the space before being captured by the audio devices. In-house recordings always favor much more than the "official" recordings. Her stamina is really remarkable, and the huge column of rock-solid sound she creates as she ascends to her high register is amazing.

Not to mention her technic : (agility, breath control ...), the very unique color of the voice and dramatic intelligence and power .... I was told this same concert could tour in Europe (Berlin, maybe Barcelona or Paris ??? ...)

Have you hear her live? I was lucky enough to have once. Hers is a voice that doesnt record well I think. While the metallic quality is there in person, it is overwhelmed by a layer of glittering overtones that just arent picked up by recording equipment. In ANY recording. She is so incredible to hear live, the beauty of tone, and the incredible dynamics.

@@nathandavis3002 it happens a lot with Spinto Sopranos; I have meet a spinto who can cut the orchestra like knife in butter and such a timbre that made me cry in all the 3 acts of Butterfly; but her voice in recordings are a suffering

I love this video because it really captures some of the experience of hearing her live, while many recordings fail to truly do justice to her voice. She's so amazing.

it is as if her sound wears an Iron Man suit which is HUGE and the inner core of the voice is tiny... it is like a hear a Huge sound surrounding the main singing voice... unbelievably strange voice and thank you for this because I always believe the ONLY way to judge a voice is through bootleg recording made by mics that are not too near the stage

You have to hear sondra live. I heard her in concert and it is very different. That grainy, metalic quality is there, but it is overwhelmed by a crown of glittering overtones. In person her voice is like a million golden ribbons surrounding you. And enormous! The same size as dolora zajicks is live, although big in a different way. She blew me away that night, I was pinned to my seat by a glorious wall of sound, navigating incredible dynamics with such musical ability. And a flawless legato line and high notes that left my ears ringing. And I brought my bootleg recorder with me and recorded it as I always do, for my future enjoyment. And it was unlistenable. So strange. If you have the opportunity to hear her live, RUN! I dont like her recordings either, but shes incredible live.

Before Caballe in Donizetti's queens role surely there's Leyla Gencer. Especially in Roberto Devereux, Leyla Gencer will be forever the only one Elisabeth the I Queen of England.

Amazing how she can move fast such a large voice. I could be wrong but I think only Sutherland and Callas were able to accomplish such feat. Caballè and Sills were great but in this regard their voices were smaller.

No one so far has been able to touch Beverly Sills in the Tudor Donizetti Queens. Her dramatic bel canto coloratura is the best there ever was. Fabulous gowns. She never transposed high notes. Her actin was impeccable. In many she she is untouchable in these roles. I miss her so much.

I have to agree with you regarding Sills although Sondra R is quite remarkable as well. Unfortunately, most European operaphiles usually fail to give Sills her due credit. I don’t know where are you writing from but this has been my experience.

Assolutamente bravissima, seppure calca troppo con l'interpretazione, un po' a discapito dei virtuosismi tipici di Donizetti. Gli acuti sui pianissimo ci sono, specialmente in "Vivi ingrato", e la Radvanovsky è certamente bravissima, ma avendo sempre nelle orecchie, in questo ruolo, l'inarrivabile Leyla Gencer, qui sento meno grazia. Elisabetta I nell'opera aveva 63 anni, mentre Sondra Radvanovsky la rappresenta come se ne avesse 90. È vero che, al tempo, arrivare ad avere 63 anni era un traguardo importante...ma non era ancora una vecchia decrepita. In questo senso, il bastone non è una grande trovata. Credo che tra tutte le interpreti di Elisabetta I regina d'Inghilterra, trionfino proprio Leyla Gencer, Mariella Devia e Sondra Radvanovsky, in questo ordine. Un grande applauso a Sondra Radvanovsky!!! 👏👏👏👏

At the Lyric Opera Of Chicago . I was there on both of her performances. It was absolutely incredible. I was at the edge of my seat and in awe . One of a kind and I will never forget it .
