They need to update the first three games graphics to match tropical freeze and put them on the Switch. Also, they need to look at the fan made Donkey Kong Country 4 The Kongs Return. If they give it that Tropical Freeze graphic shine. I bet the will sell. Maybe not for sixty bones except for the Kongs Return. But at least forty bones a piece.

My dad loves Bramble Scramble and the race with Squawks. I'm partial to the carnival race. DKC2 is one of the only games on SNES that holds up.
@WizardClipAudio
@WizardClipAudio 7 лет назад
The programming magic they used in Bramble Scramble is basically why there's no intro video to DKC2 like the other DKC games. Let that sink in for a minute. The programmers felt that including a few extra intricate channels to a track that the SNES was not supposed to natively pull off for that level was more important than the opening presentation. That's awesome. That is art right there.

Nick eh, not that you’ll probably ever read this, but I guess this is for future people to read. Hello from May 2020. This is subjective, and completely up to personal opinion, but I have always believed that it’s a huge generalization that “games now are all bad”. I believe also that OUR OLD BUDDIES MICROSOFT >:( had a big part to play in that, what with the Mictotransactions, and cash-grabbiness. Plus the fact that they ran all of Rare’s IPs into the ground. I might be a bit baiased, since because of all the reasons above and more, Microsoft/EA is by far my least favorite company, but Sony, Indie devs, and Nintendo still have games that I consider to be amazing, sometimes artful. Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, etc from Sony, while Nintendo’s games, excluding the mobile games and some notable duds like Paper Mario Color Splash/Sticker Star, are all at least at the level (pun intended) of “good” in my eyes. Think of recent games like Mario Odyssey, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Smash Ultimate, and, somewhat pertaining to this video, DKC Tropical Freeze. These games are beautiful, engaging, fun, and do what they set out to do and more. And these are just a few examples out of hundreds, if not thousands! Over 35 years of game development experience can play to your strengths in the long run, y’know? While in my eyes, Microsoft tends to disappoint, the other parts of the industry more than make up for its failures. Even Indie games, like Undertale or Hollow Knight, for example. Both of these games are just completely amazing to me. So I dont really understand it when people say things like, “All Games after like 2000 are bad.” Like I said, there are undoubtably some low points in the industry as of late, but it can get to be high, as well! Wait, not like that!!! That did not sound PG!!!

You know, we never really thought about Diddy's hero quest being a metaphor for Rare going on a similar journey with this game... but that really makes sense in a weird way. This is how amazing your videos are: There's literally not an hour in the day since 1995 where we don't think about this game, and you just made us think of it in a NEW WAY. That's absurd.

When Stickerbrush started rolling, the tears started welling. David Wise is my primary inspiration for music. This game is a masterwork of art, in its entirety and in its composite parts. Every single background is sublime piece of art; I could just get lost in them. While DKC1 had this too, it was DKC2's slight push more towards surrealism that elevated it even further. And Wise's organic, primordially evocative music is the perfect compliment.

According to Wikipedia, DKC2 is the best selling SNES game ever that was not bundled with the SNES console at some point. All 5 better selling games (in order: Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, DKC1, Super Mario Kart and Street Fighter II: The World Warrior) were bundled with the console, very obviously boosting sales by a significant margin. To give you an even better idea of how much of an accomplishment that is: even Link to the Past (still considered one of the best Zelda games in the series by many) sold LESS copies than DKC2, and that game WAS bundled with the console at some point. This game is one of my two favorite SNES games ever. The only other game that comes close is Unirally/Uniracers, a superb game which sadly most people around me don't even know about due to the game's legal issues. (freaking Pixar...)
@RomantiqueTp
@RomantiqueTp 6 лет назад
Pretty sure Street Fighter 2 was only bundled with systems in a few European countries, where the SNES was nowhere as popular as it was in the US and Japan. No way it sold over 2 million more copies than DKC2 just because of that.

As someone else said, that song has a name, but they got it slightly wrong. It's called Stickerbush Symphony, not Stickerbrush. Think about it. It's the music for all the bramble levels. Brambles are bushes that stick you with their thorns, hence, Stickerbush. I have no idea what a Sticker-brush is. Maybe someone decorated their painting implement or made it spiky.

I first played this game funny enough at a friends place, he had a SNES and I was one of those poorer kids who only had a GameBoy because my parents never got me any consoles at the time during the 90s until I was old enough to save up for an N64 years later. So when I heard this game had a port on the Game Boy, I got that version and loved it even with its obvious flaws being a imperfect Game Boy version of an amazing SNES game. But I loved it both the SNES version (when I downloaded it via Wii's Virtual Console 10 years ago) and the amazing yet heavily flawed GameBoy version of this game. But I was a kid back then and I loved being able to play a game like this in the first place because I never had an SNES to begin with. So you can see why this game meant allot to me at least the GameBoy version was, and when I eventually played the SNES rom on the Wii's Virtual Console, I can happily say that memories flowed back to me playing this originally at a friends house all those years ago it was like remembering a school friend who I hardly ever saw after I grew up due to life issues and even falling out with them over things that happened during late elementary school. But I still never hated him, just felt sad that some things happened late in elementry school life that kinda hurt me in a way, but I never hated him at all because without him having an SNES and allowing me to play this game at his place, I may never had been able to know how awesome this game was and how excited I was a year later when it came out on the GameBoy system

1991-1996 were some of the most magical times for gaming. I wish I could have been around to experience it. I can name so many of my favorite games that come from that era, and I didn't even play ANYTHING on those consoles until I was in high school. @Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 6 лет назад
I think the weird thing about how the graphics have aged for this trilogy for me is that the way it turned cgi into still images for sprite animation makes it 'read' more like claymation than early cgi, much to it's benefit.
@filmaticpictures9693
@filmaticpictures9693 6 лет назад
Precisely. To me, that is why these games look so much better than DKC Returns. Though Returns is very clean and cartoony, the original trilogy captured a realistic look that surpassed today's average CGI. The lighting and textures create a unified atmosphere that ties everything into an excellently composed world. It doesn't seem like separate assets puzzled together, but rather one blended world.

Just about everything you said when wrapping up is almost exactly how I feel about Tropical Freeze. It's funny how the Retro Studios games line up with the Rare ones like that. Returns played it sort of safe and borrowed a lot from DKC1, while Tropical Freeze goes above and beyond to be its own thing and be the best it can be, just like DKC2.
@stanstanstan2597
@stanstanstan2597 3 года назад
EXACTLY! I thought that as well. Returns, to me, lacks quite a lot of identity compared to Tropical Freeze. I loved seeing the DKC worlds expanded and remade with new levels and enemies and such (plus a few new worlds that were entirely original) and the pathos of the game was good. But it borrowed SO much from its predecessors, that what little it did do differently identity-wise just isn’t enough to compensate. Tropical Freeze, like DKC2, is much more out-there and creative. All that’s left now is to hope that whatever else ends up happening with DKC, it doesn’t get a weird third entry that didn’t have as good of an atmosphere or music, and added a playable character with no substance that nobody likes, and just wasn’t really as good.

It's also not entirely accurate to even call Super Metroid a "sidescroller." You go up and down just as frequently as left and right, and the focus isn't really on getting to a destination as much as finding what each area has to offer.

Yeah. Your video about this game is the only one on RU-vid that does justice with this game. Rare's first trilogy of donkey Kong is the only three games I keep playing to this date, and their dedication shows it. Diddy's Kong Quest is the climax of the three with the 3rd being the low point (still not a bad game per se).... Your analysis is on point and the amount of info you bring is just right. From David Wise's superb work to the artstyle, you touch every relevant point that should be take into account when talking about this absurdly good game. Congratss

This is the first game I ever played, and it pushed me to look at my autism in ways I never thought was possible. It made me think about multiple angles, and it really made me think hard to overcome challenges. I still remember defeating the secret world for the first time. I’ll never forget everything this game did for me for the rest of my life in. It helped an eight-year-old me. Now 30, and I still haven’t forgot this game and I never will

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is the best game of all time. Am I saying that because Rare are absolute gaming geniuses, or just because I was 11 when I first played it? Probably 50-50. But it will always be the best.

Finally a worthy review of this legend. I think your review like this game was pretty remarkable man, everyone who played this game has a nostalgic fondness that goes beyond any other and the love of Bramble Scramble may need a video all to itself but this is the first time I've heard someone analyze it's haunting beauty and splendor. Thank you.

I did like how this game used every level theme three times. There was shipdecks, ship sails, ship interiors, lava levels, mine shafts, swamps, brambles, roller coasters, bee hives, haunted forests, ice stages, castle levels, and jungle levels in the lost world.

I grew up watching my daddy play Nintendo. When he got the first DK Country, it blew my mind. The second one almost stopped my heart. Even Mario never looked exactly like his box art. I agree it IS the perfect game. My Dad didn't want me or my brother playing though, because he was afraid we'd erase his data. But our granny would bring the Nintendo over to her house, so we could play while he was at work. Overcast skies usually depress me, but sometimes the atmosphere will be just right, it'll take me back to those happy days, when I'd watch my daddy play. I call days like that "Donkey Kong Days." After he died, 2 years ago, I thought, 'There will be no more Donkey Kong Days for me' and overcast skies will forever be just that. But time has passed and I've seen more Donkey Kong Days since then, and I can play those games with my own child now. Also, video game music can be so iconic, but Donkey Kong music is the ONLY game music I'd blast on my stereo and jam out to. Especially from the 2nd game. Before RU-vid, I had to buy an SNES, hook it up to my stereo, pop the game in, and pause it just to do that.

Hell yes!! This game needs the credit it deserves. I always thought it was one of the best games ever. I remember I visited my cousin for a week, who had this and Mario RPG. My mom was mad because I did nothing but play those two the entire time... 😏 It still has a better sense of artistry than most games ever made. Although DKC was amazing, DKC2 was even better, for the very reasons that you said.

I never really caught up with DK games (finished the first one and barely played the second one but many years later), mostly because I started to focus (well, "obssess" actually) on Japanese manga, anime and videogames (Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa and Secret of Mana particularly). But OHBOY isn't David Wise a freaking genius or what. His Battletoads' score was no fluke at all, and he found I believe, the best western approach to make a compelling score specifically for games. I didn't know he did DKC's scores, but just hearing them here talks about how great his work was (and for people that played Snake, Rattle n' Roll, well... do DKC's scores "ring a bell"?). I'm really invested on revisiting the saga after watching this video. Just like your Metroid videos, great work man.

I really found this video 5 years late huh... I have a unique history with this game. The first DKC was one of the first video games I ever remember playing, but I didn't know sequels existed for years and I didn't pick this one up until a friend challenged me to learn to speedrun it for a charity race we were planning years ago. One thing you said that really resonated with me is that this game strikes an amazing balance between allowing a high skilled played to blaze through levels with insane momentum, or encouraging a slower, more exploration focused pace. It made me realize that I've been playing one way while neglecting the other for years and it inspired me to begin my first 100% playthrough, I'm just starting Krazy Kremland and it's been so much fun I had to come back and comment on this video to thank you for shedding a light on this aspect of the game I was neglecting

Brandon Alexander Yeah, no doubt... but hey, this time a year ago I had barely over 200 subscribers. It's like pushing a boulder up a hill. It's hard and slow and arduous, but once it gets there, and it starts picking up momentum, it'll fly. And considering the growing archive of quality videos I've got, I feel like I'm one big break away from getting over that hill. All it'd take is some large-ish gaming news site giving me some coverage...

Much better level design & breathtaking music make this one a masterpiece ahead of the first. I prefer playing as the more agile Diddy (for the first one too) + Dixie is a great 1A sidekick to get through challenging areas. Maybe my favourite game to defeat, it all feels so exhilarating. Pirate ship & mining levels are ridiculously amazing. Probably in my top 3 for the SNES. Surely in my top 5-10 all time gaming.

This game still stands as one of my favorites of all time, and like you I consider it an evergreen game that I play yearly. When your critique came to trying to find faults or nitpicks with the game, I also had a difficult time coming up with anything worth mentioning. Great critique, and I always like how manage you find some deeper symbolism in games that aren't inherently apparent.

Love this game. I've been playing through it with a friend recently and despite being difficult, it is a blast. Though I've always thought the Donkey Kong games had splendid graphics, it wasn't until now that I realize just how precise and excellently crafted the gameplay truly is-- even more so than Mario World (IMO). It'd be awesome to see Rare get ahold of their original pre-rendered assets (and models) and render them in HD sprites now. It would look amazing without the graphical limitations of the era. Thanks for making these videos, you do such an exceptional job.

What I like about Mrs. Wrinkly Kong classroom is that she is very educated in literature. Reading and writing is her strong suit, but math on the other hand is a different story. The chalkboard shows multiplication, division, and addition which all have the wrong answer. As simple as addition and elementary it really shows that math is not her suit.
