This is a beginner/intermediate speedrun tutorial for Donkey Kong Country 2! If you've been interested in learning the game, and want a detailed explanation of what goes in to all the stages, then this is for you!

2:12:14 "Web Woods is the hardest stage in the game. It doesn't matter how good you are at the stage. It will get harder with you." For some reason this quote has stuck with me. I used to speedrun this game years ago, but this quote seems like such a deep philosophical thought for something that was just said in passing. Almost everything gets more difficult the better you get at it, or why else would I remember this from 7 years ago?

A good way I just found to practice the big boy jump trick is to go to first level of the game Pirate Panic and practice doing it off all the rats, I was actually successful a few times, maybe this can help others too!

You'll get there! Just be patient with yourself, focus on the small victories, and try to just get through stages without dying at first. :)

Hey Antilles, I've been watching a bunch of your videos and it inspired me to pick DKC2 back up. I ran into a weird thing in Pirate Panic that I've never seen any of the runners cover (probably because it isn't that useful), but I figured this would be a good video to ask about it. I was messing around with picking up an invisible barrel and somehow lost Diddy's hitbox. Any idea how or why that would happen?

Lost Diddy's hitbox? As in got the invis and then Diddy couldn't get hit anymore? That's crazy! I've never seen that before! I knew there was an invis in 1-1, but yeah, I haven't used it. The only category it might be useful for is low%, but i don't know that anybody runs that. It might be worth jumping into our discord channel (there's a link from the wiki) and asking about that.

Yep, that's definitely where the game really starts to get rough. Just take your time, learn just what you need to get through each stage without dying - don't worry about more advanced stuff until you're more consistent!

Hi! Great Video! Donkey Kong Country 2 is my favorite video game of all time so I wanted to start trying to speed run it and your video has helped me a lot! Was just wondering if you use an auto splitter? if so could you provide a link? I had a look around dkcspeedruns but could only find a lua script.

I don't use an autosplitter, no. I just always do it myself the old fashioned way. I'm not aware of something like that for this game. The wiki has some fantastic learning resources, but not a ton of tools. It might be worth hopping into the discord and asking around there! And thanks! Glad it's been of use to you!

Anyone has hints for the 2-2 trick? I always end up hitting the rats with Dixie

Usually that means you didn't get enough height from your jump. Delay a little bit more before you jump off of the hook - that way Dixie will meet back up with you and you'll get the max boost from the double jump. If you do throw into the rats, though, usually you can just throw again right when she lands on you (like juggling her in the air). It's only a 4-6s time save, so not a huge deal. But it's a really good place to practice those Big Bois, which are a pretty important fundamental trick.

Hi great tutorial. I was just wondering if you use an emulator or the original snes and controller. If all original how do u put it on a computer screen and put timer overlay over the top thank you

I use all original stuff. The capture software I use is called OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), and I use a capture device called GV-USB2 (but any composite capture will do). Basically I have a splitter that takes the A/V output from the SNES and turns it into two - one path goes to my TV the other goes to my computer. Should be lots of good guides out there online for this kind of stuff. Emulator is a great way to start, too, though. SNES9x v1.53 is recommended. If you do that, I recommend having a controller as well (rather than keyboard).

Hey mate I play on the wii virtual console and am trying to do the castle crush warp. I've done all the positioning perfect about 20 times but can't get it to work. It seems like the crush rises faster on the vc version so when I get the invisible barrel the spiny runs into me the split second after. I can't find any info about it not working on the vc version

It definitely should work on the VC version with no problems - so without any video, all I can really say is that there must be something slightly off that you're doing. After you get the invis and get hit, does anything happen at all? Sometimes if you do the trick wrong, Dixie will end up dying. Hey great video, offers lots of valuable insight. Question, at the start of Crackhead 3-3, i'm having major inconsistency rolling into the first jumping krok, i only make it around half the time, otherwise i just hit the barrel/platform hes standing on and die. Wondering what the inputs or intricacies are? Thanks for any help (sorry for being long winded haha).

No worries! Glad to help. That particular type of movement is quite tricky, so don't feel bad that you're having trouble with it. You want to make sure you land on the first barrel to the left with good speed, and then you want to roll right at the edge, so that you get the full distance across the gap before you start to drop. And I don't highlight it in this video, since it wasn't discovered at the time, but make sure you do learn the Krackhead Wrong Warp! It's fairly easy, and will save a lot of time (and frustration) in not having to learn the second half of the stage.

Yeah :( I tried to call it out in the video as best I could, but it was an annotation and not everywhere supports those now. Second half is definitely more fun! If it helps you feel better, I still haven't learned that warp either...

It's all good. I'm honestly glad that i grinded the level out before i learnt of the warp, it's a pretty exhilarating experience to nail the level perfectly all the way to the end. Just watched the tutorial for the warp on dkcspeedruns, dunno how people even begin to find these types of things.

I play on a Super Nintendo and use a Game Saver to practice. But when I started, I used SNES9x 1.53 (played with an SNES controller and a USB adapter)

While there are a lot of minor improvements that could be made to any given stage, those things really don't come into play until you've got a pretty solid time already. This guide should be sufficient to get you through the areas that are tricky for starting out and to help you get your basic movement down. The biggest change since this guide was made is the discovery of the wrong warp in 3-3 - I've linked a video to that in the description above. Definitely learn that instead of the second half of the stage. You can definitely get a 45 with the strats in this guide - possibly as low as a 43 if you do most of the wrong warps. Once you're there, the video Kanis made (linked above as well) is like a 7 hour tutorial that goes into incredible detail on movement through every level.

I know you're retired but I'm going crazy trying to be consistent with the team throw super jump in Kannon's Klaim. I can do the one in Rambi Rumble almost every single time as well as Vayaboi when I manage to climb up in time but the one in Kannon's Klaim is giving me so much trouble, I was able to do it pretty consistently the first day I've practiced it but now I'm lucky to get it once every 5 attempts, I always wait for Dixie to be coming back to me before jumping and I just can't figure out why I am not able to get enough height, you really don't get much time to jump when Dixie comes back so I am assuming It's probably not bad timing with the initial jump off the hook but rather bad timing in the air? Any tips? I know It's tough without seeing how I do it but you may have had a similar issue in the past? Thanks and sorry for bothering you! I am usually pretty good at figuring out all that stuff by myself but I'm really pulling my hair on this one.

Well, I'm not even close to retired from answering questions on RU-vid. So no worries. :-P The timing of the initial jump off of the hook is actually very important. You want to make sure that Dixie is coming back to you right when you're at the peak of your jump. Timing that and then timing the next B press so that you get the maximum height in the right area is actually quite difficult. But if you start to focus your jump off of the hook so that she hits you at the peak of your jump, you'll get the first part of it down. Then you just have to add the second press - too early and you won't get a big enough double jump. Too late and you'll just fall. You'll eventually develop a rhythm as to when you press the buttons (I could probably do it right now ez even though I haven't played this game in months - it really does become second nature). But it definitely takes a long time and making a lot of mistakes to learn - so don't feel bad!The timing on each of these Big Bois is a little different - so even though you can get the concept down with one of them, the exact movement and timing will be different on another.

Is there any differences between PAL and NTSC?

Short answer is yes, but I have no idea what they are. Since PAL runs at 50Hz, all the timing is going to be completely different. And I don't know enough about the software itself to know if the same glitches work or not. BUT, that said, the levels are almost certainly the same. So the overall movement is going to be very similar. This guide is much more about movement and getting through tough sections than it is about the nitty gritty, so it should very much still apply at the big picture.

How many seconds of difference between US and JP 1.1 versions?

JP is a frame or two faster, because it has one fewer bee in the section at 1:53:25, meaning one fewer jump on a flat in Haunted Hall. So it's completely negligible.

Sure. There is no team up jump in 1-4 though... the WW in 1-2 isn't too bad if you can consistently beetle clash. But also not a big deal until you've got like a 45.

Do you hear the sound of the warp barrel firing repeatedly? It's likely that you're using a version 1.0 ROM of the game - it needs to to be version 1.1. Wrong warps send the game into an infinite loop state in 1.0. (I assume you weren't trying for any of the world 1 wrong warps.). I don't think I mentioned this little detail as clearly as I should have in the video...
