The 3DS version has no motion controls and a whole extra world of levels to play.

No talk of the 3DS version? I love how they changed the motion mechanics into a simple button press, and actually turned World 9 into a proper full world

To reach 200% completion, on your save file, all you have to do is complete all levels in mirror mode. You don't even have to collect the KONG letters in mirror mode. You don't have to complete any time trials, or collect a single puzzle piece. Based on what he says in the video, Jirard didn't know this.

I never found the motion controls to be horrible, I kind of liked them actually. Glad they returned as an option in Tropical Freeze.

Thanks for completing this one jirard, it means something to the both of us! This game was my entire childhood, and one of the few games I’ve completed. I didn’t have many friends and always got made fun of, but this game was always my go to to make me feel better.

Returns is fun but Tropical Freeze is a much better experience!

I love the modern DKC games. Some of the best 2D platformers out there. Even better than the older DKC games IMO.

Jirard isn't lying when he says that getting all of the time attack mode shiny gold medals is absolutely brutal. I've played around 6 or 7 hours solely on time attack mode (possibly even more), and I've only gotten six of those bad boys. This game will take a lot out of you if you plan to complete it, in short.

If you hate the motion controls, then just play the 3DS port.

This review was definitely...quite appealing, I'd say.

Well, I think the story has some really cool elements. The factory takes the magical essence of bananas and animates wooden shells into an army of Tikis, as seen in 7-B Feather Fiend. And that's just one example. Cool video, though! I love DKCR.

I completed this game during a 3-day rental from my local video store, fucking loved it. Looking back, it does look pretty damn good for original Wii. The "waggle controls" neither helped nor hindered the game, imo. It's as easy to waggle as it is to press a button, if not easier. I feel that people just like to complain because it is a bit silly of a control style

If you REALLY want to hate yourself, try and 100% Donkey Kong 64. AKA The game with the most collectabes in a game. Period.

My absolute favorite Donkey Kong game! Also, this is one of the few games where I actually *love* the controls! The caveat to the controls, though, is that you need the nunchuck attachment; the waggle makes more sense when you waggle both like how DK pounds the ground. I almost fully completed the game before the challenge threshold got to me. The charm and visuals are so captivating, it was still delightful playing while struggling through the harder challenges. Also, 2-player is a nightmare starting at around the 4th world, when mine cart and rocket runs cost 2 lives because only one of you will operate the cart. It's fun to play with friends up until then; After that, they are more of a burden due to the much more frequent crumbling platforms and obstacles. It's actually very reminiscent of the 4-player Mario games ; fun with friends until you're all in each other's way.

I don't know if people call this out, Jirard, but I *LOVE* how you always make that background shelf match aesthetically to the game you're completing. It's a great way to utilize one space and give it a fresh feel for each episode. Thank you for the small details!

I remember playing this at my friends house and having SO much fun with it, but I wasn’t over there long enough nor was I good enough to get past world one. BUT when they made the 3DS port I feel in LOVE with this game

This game is actually pretty nice on keyboard. Binding the Wiimote and Nunchuk shakes to keys works well and is quote comfortable depending on your keyboard and control setup

the donkey kong country series is what i grew up with it was fun and playing returns was amazing thanks for doing this episode and its one of my personal favorites

Wow! Dude... 107 deaths... I know you are probably one of the better Donkey-Kong-Players out there, I was very impressed (and entertained) seeing you do the game with the bongo drum controller thingi, but... Only 107 deaths? All the temple levels, the cave world AND mirror mode? Even if you were able to practice for a few weeks to start the playthrough very skilled, I... Wow. I consider myself a good gamer, and I too completed this game, but I died like... 1070 times. Maybe more. Mirror mode is such a pain. Fun, but painful on your patience. You ARE Donkey Kong man. You really are. Wow. I guess that is what seperates you from us »normal« gamers. Love your content Jirard!

The only thing I didn't like about this game was the lack of Stickerbrush Symphony. Thankfully Tropical Freeze fixed that.

This is my most favorite Donkey Kong game ever. My first play through a year after its release, I only had 26 deaths.

My favorite DKC game is Diddy's Kong-quest. It's one of my favorite platformers in general.

Why are you playing with the bongo controllers on top of a cardboard box? They can go on your lap just fine. Or Hell, sit on the floor with them between your legs if you need a solid surface so much.

Almost played through all time and mirror mode. I just had half of the last world to get when my wii nonshock broke (you really should play it with that) I really loved time mode. You feel so good mastering every level. Like you are playing in instument and every level is a song. But with pure perfection.

It was a dark day on Kong island. That night the bananas were stolen. This time was different. Donkey Kong decided to consult Wrinkly Kong. She warned DK to be careful who he trusts. This could get serious. Meanwhile Diddy Kong was walking along the beach when he spotted something strange. The rain made it hard to see but it was some sort of shadow. Lightning struck and the figure disappeared. Diddy looked around. His fear was overwhelming him. He blinked and started to breath heavily. Suddenly the shadow reappeared. And it was approaching quickly. Diddy ran, but the shadow was faster. The sound of lightning masked his final scream. Meanwhile Donkey Kong was trying to rap his head around who to trust. Tiny (being the youngest Kong) was afraid. She went to DK for comfort. But DK did not trust her? “Why are you running?” She said quietly. “How do I know to trust you?” DK screamed. Tiny began to cry. DK’s heart shook. He had felt bad. “I don’t care about the bananas anymore!” DK shouted. “I just need you to be safe.” Meanwhile Chunky Kong had found a door he had never seen before. Although he was afraid he was more determined to find the bananas. He crept open the door and the room was completely black. The only light was from the open door. He entered with caution. He heard the sound of a rubber band snapping. Then the door slammed. The room was pitch black. Chunky Kong shrieked in fear! Then from behind him a light turned on. But before he turned around he felt something metal touch his head. “Where are the bananas Chunky” said Lanky Kong. Chunky began to cry. “Say something!” Lanky demanded. “I am giving you 3 seconds! 3!” As Lanky counted down each second felt longer than the next until everything went black for Chunky. When Lanky had taken the shot he turned around only to see Tiny Kong standing at the door. “It’s not what it looks like!” Lanky exclaimed. The sight of Chunky’s cold dead body pierced through Tiny’s soul. Here innocent little mind was destroyed. Then fight of flight instincts came in. Tiny ran. She was much faster than Lanky. She ran trying to tell DK what she had seen. Lanky, using all of his might started gain on Tiny. She was almost there. DK’s room was only a skip and a hop away until she was grabbed. Lanky told her she was not going say anything. When she started to cry one final gunshot was heard. As Tiny fell to the ground the last thing she heard was, “I know who stole the bananas.” Lanky had 1 target left. DK. He approached DK’s room. He opened the door. “Lanky, how could you?” “You’re not who you say you are Donkey.” Lanky exclaimed. Lanky was not games anymore. “I never thought the first member of our crew would do such a horrible thing.” “What are you saying Lanky?” DK said with worry in his voice. “ You stole the bananas DK! And killed Diddy too.” Lanky accused. “What proof do you have?” DK said defensively. “You know all of the kongs. When you went to Wrinkly Kong advise on who to trust...In your evil scheme! You had the fastest Dixe go on the beach and kill Diddy. You had Funky supply you with weapons like the one I have now. You stored them in the hoard. And Chunky... poor Chunky. You used him to distract me. I will kill you just like I killed him. But more painfully this time! Be ready for me to shoot ya. It’s gonna hurt!” Lanky took the first shot. The bullet whizzed passed DK head. DK knocked down his dresser and used it as cover. DK pulled out his coconut gun and started to fire in spurts. A coconut shell hit Lanky’s arm, and it hurt. Bullets and coconuts flew all over the room. As the battle went on the two Kongs grew weary. “You are a sick ape DK!” Lanky shouted. Then their guns made a clicking noise. They were out of ammo. Lanky through his gun at donkey and it hit him in the head. Donkey fell to the ground. He pulled out his grape blow gun. “You don’t want to do this Lanky.” DK said. “What a sad excuse for last words.” Lanky said. Lanky shot Dk. The grape went right between the eyes. DK was finished. Lanky fell to the ground from exhaustion. “...What a night”

Why didn't play or at LEAST talk about the 3DS version I mean it fixes the Controls and adds more to the Secret world you unlock oh well good video anyway

I don't know about you, but I actually enjoyed playing both of the "Donkey Konga" games for the Gamecube; It's "Donkey Kong Jungle Beats" that I didn't enjoy for some reason. :P

This game is so nostalgic to me, i loved this game with my friend back in the wii days, and i really hope they port it to switch soon.

Idk if you know this, or if someone already told you, but having Diddy Kong on your back also allows you to infinitely roll, even tho it’s not always required. I’m sure you’ve found this out by now, but it can be helpful during the time trials

I remember how brutal the time attack levels were, especially the waves of spider one and the temple with a shit ton of spikes and barrels. Those were nightmares o-e

DKC Returns 3D was better, because you could actually use buttons.

Although he said he was annoyed with the waggle, Jirard seems to be super resilient. And I LOLED so hard that there was even a MIRROR mode with one life that only super hardcore would dare to 100% complete lol!

107 deaths you say? I just played through this game, no time attack, no mirror mode, but I got all the puzzle pieces and kong letters and beat the golden temple for 100% and I am fairly certain that I died WAY more than 107 times. You must be incredibly skilled. I tip my hat to you good sir.

I'll always remember getting this game. It was my birthday so I got to go to GameStop with my grandpa and I had my heart set on Mario vs dk miniland mayhem, but then I saw dkcr so I stopped grandpa mid-checkout and got this instead and I can confidently say that was one of the best decisions in my life.

If you like Returns, you'll LOVE Tropical Freeze. I hope he does that sometime in the near future.
